I love it! It reminds me of how beach cottages used to look like in my day - nothing fancy, eclectic, and vintage, and practical for the beach! I love the glass float light!
What an organic feeling home with all the textures & smells of outdoors brought in. The intentional decor is amazing because everything is thought through. Bravo🙏🙏🙏Blessing’s
Amazing beach house! Love the minimalistic organized vibe. No need much space for housing, just the essentials. Beautiful details! Love your vibe, must be fantastic with 5 kids, 3 dogs and your husband. Sunny greetz!!🥰🥰
That old kitchen picture layout reminds me of the house i grew up in almost to the tee, with a 30x30 window and farm style sink below it, only ours was a shallow sink, it was the vain of my existence, lol. All those times spent washing dishes helping our mother, with a chair propped up to the counter taking turns with my twin each night as we got older staring out into the backyard and the mammoth avocado tree that the window framed. and off to the left the old frigidaire upper freezer and lower refrigerator and the lazy susan cabinet that spun and everything that fell out of it when spun fast causing it to jam. Thank God for those small kitchens and small houses that brought the family together. Thanks for Sharing
Wow! This is really spectacular! Overall, it's so organic and such a smart use of the crab traps & lobster pot! When I heard 800 sq. ft. I winced a little but, it really looks more spacious! I love how meticulous and well-thought out everything is. It reminded me of the saying, "The devil's in the details." Love the Outer Banks, even though I'm a Florida native.🌞
A really beautiful home and one that is filled with love and family! I love every thing about it including the white washed wood cabinets and wood wall paneling. Well thought out. And oh, the audio was perfect. Not a flaw even for this 71 year old hard of hearing aid wearer. LOL. God bless!
Fantastic! There's so much to love about the cottage. It's genuine and beautiful. I love the elements and creativity of the crab trap lights, cantina window, kitchen faucet selection, vaulted ceiling, bunk room and the amazing vintage art and seascapes that remind me of Winslow Homer. I love that your family enjoys children's books, and I wrote and illustrated a couple that are nostalgic and did fairly well in the marketplace. I did The Snowman in the Moon and Mr. George and the Red Hat. I'm so inspired after watching this video about beach life and your book on the subject. I was always a bay kid growing up and love crabbing, but I love all things beach. I'm inspired also to do more surf paintings. Actually, some of those old 1950's paint by numbers of surf are kind of cool to pick up. The king of fine art painting nautical themed art is Winslow Homer to me because just by saying his name, I can visualize his power as a painter. You do wonderful work in design and it's very genuine.
So glad to see you back. AbbyJo, I’ll definitely be looking forward to your next family adventure. Your content has always been wonderful so no matter where you go or where you live, I know your home is going to be wonderful. God bless you and your family. 😊
What a sweet cottage!! I was going to say that has to be Duck or Corolla!!! You sound just like me! I've been going to OBX since I was a kid in the late 70s, just a fishing village then. My now husband and I would go down there with my family when we were dating in college (I was an interior designer too)..yes, we live in Virginia! My dream has always been to get a tiny cottage down there, just a little get away where we could go to relax, I could paint and create, or just hang with family and friends. It's so hard to find these little jewels anymore because people come in and build these huge houses. I love the old traditional "native" OBX style. To be under one of those live oaks, walk to the market, take a kayak out on the sound...nothing better!!!! Now, if I could just win the lottery, LOL!!!
I’m so in love with this place! It’s perfection! Thank you for keeping the integrity of a typical OBX beach cottage while infusing it with your amazing style . ❤️
Beautiful organic home. So much character/style and thought put into a small home without it feeling over done. So much inspiration to be had. Also loving your attire and would love to know where your pants are from.
Beautiful cottage! Thank you so much for the home tour! The renovations turned out great; you all did a fantastic job. I love the OBX so much, and love visiting when I can. Enjoy your week; take care and be safe, especially with Debby heading up that way. 😊😊💖💖🙏🏻🙏🏻🌹🌹
Not sure about bugs there but if they are an issue, I would screen in the eating area- that way you can extend eating outside for most of the year. You can also add additional seating for that increased living space
Omg thank you SO MUCH for this tour!!!! I have all of your books (love them all!) and this tour is like icing on the cake. I love all the details! You really help me with designing my own spaces. I love how you are so thoughtful with every square inch. Gorgeous!!!!
Love the Outer Banks and Edward Teach!! You have perfect taste. I love your home and everything you've lonvingly done to bring it back to life. When I saw the kitchen and secret stools (never understood why you have to stand in the kitchen to do everything) that sealed the deal!! Just subscribed, bring it on!!
What an incredible restoration. I agree just pitching the ceiling a few feet makes all the difference in a small space. I love absolutist everything about this family, this home, their story about college . But ... OMG.. how in the world does someone with 5 kids have a figure like that!!!!! I am sooooooooooooooo jealous!
I absolutely love your sweet cottage. We live in Florida but not close to the ocean..well, 1.5 hours away close...Always a dream of our's to live by the sea..until Hurricane season..Thankfully, Debbiy just skirted by. WHEW! You guys did a phenom job on your home. Great use of every single inch! I love that you put so much thought into it! The Outer Banks is a wonderful area..I'm quite jelly of you right about now!!!! Enjoy those kiddos while you're still babies yourselves!!! It goes by far too quickly!
I love how functional your house is . We’re a family of 5 and 5 cats. We’re about to move into a smaller home now coming from a 3000sqft house. I keep wondering how do people live in small homes and not feel crammed but I see how
I love everything you design. In the process of designing an A frame in the smoky mountains and taking as much inspiration. I’m especially in love with the cement grey fireplace and wood accents. Thanks for sharing.
I absolutely adore how you made such a small space so open! You truly maximized every space here. If I could, I would have so purchased this gem in Corolla! One day, one day, that beach gem will happen! Truly adore your work! 🧡
You’re so talented at making any space feel like a special jewel box. I’m sure your children will cherish their magical memories made here! Thanks for sharing.
Love your asthetic. Nothing extraneous. Simple, yet elegant. My son lives in Newport and is going to have new house built. I will refer him and his wife to your channel. Good luck with hurricane Debby.
Enjoyed the full tour. Beautiful family and a wonderful renovation! I can relate, spent 6 months renovating a similar 1120 square foot cottage in Kure Beach, down to the 1000 feet of decking. It was a holiday home for us but, have moved here full time and it's half the size of our family home. Was this a holiday home or year round for 5 years?
Hi Lauren, can you tell me where you got the kitchen knobs? They are so pretty! I love your design style!!! So casual and beautiful!!! Thanks in advance. Liz
The living room is a great improvement especially the fireplace which is wonderful. I would have to have the settee backing onto the wall opposite the fireplace and be able to see outdoors ie the windows as that is such a beautiful feature and would open the whole room up. You could put a bucket chair either side and still have the openness. The simplicity of the home is charming.
What a special place. It's beautiful and well planned to maximize space. I followed along as you bought this home, renovated and enjoyed it with your family. Thank you for sharing. 😊
Years ago I built a 670 sq ft cottage on the OBX & the size worked perfectly for our family of five. I loved that cottage so can appreciate yours! Large homes are just so unnecessary when you spend most of your time roaming!
your welcome...I had to be the "voice of reason".....I did the same in Pawleys Island South Carolina...10 yrs ago. I would LOVE LOVE that house!!!!!!!!!!!soo cool...I hope to do this again, soon...im soon to be 67...still working. looks like a cool area,i have never been,..I would be scared to buy there ,because maybe a hurricane could leave me homeless in my retirement..god bless good luck..Jim from New York.....
What a beautiful renovation. My family and I vacation in the outer banks every year and are staying in Corolla for the first time this summer. Looks like the home sold recently, will you be renovating another outer banks home for your family?
Love what you did with the cottage, Lauren. I know that neighborhood well, my family spent a lot of time in Corolla in an oceanfront beach house down the street, not sure if the house is still there. We took a boat from Waterlily as the second bridge had not been built yet.
Our good friends the Runnels built 1127 Persimmon in the sixties, it was such a cool home, filled with Dick's artwork, very chic in its day! Corolla was just a fishing village then.
One more thing, Lauren. The Runnels primary home was amazing, you would love it, designed by Ben Dombar of Cincinnati. Every owner since has kept it mostly unchanged. Spent lots of time in that house as the Runnels daughter Ann was my childhood friend.
You won’t believe this but we bought both this house and 1127 from Anne! We named 1127 the “Beach Cabin” and fixed it II a bit (not changing any of the amazing architecture / cabinets etc) and even painted it in the same green. I’ll be posting a tour of it soon but it looks very much the same as it always did. We had heard buyers were going to tear it down so we bought it, fixed it up and sold it. 🫶
A family of 7 in 800 sq Ft! I’m single in 700 sqft and sometimes I feel squeezed. so I’m looking forward to seeing how you do it. Sure there’s some hints for more breathing space.
Lovely house… that stone shower is gorgeous! The oak limbs are overburdened and the tree will start self destructing if you don’t have some weight taken off the ends.
What a lovely tour of the Lost Cottage! 🌊🤍 It’s amazing to see how your family of 7 made such great memories in an 800 square foot surf shack. It must be bittersweet moving on to a larger place, but it’s clear that the Lost Cottage will always hold a special place in your hearts. Thanks for sharing this heartfelt glimpse into your cherished family home! 🏡✨
The faucet, fridge, and cabinetry create the casual vibe that fits the architecture, even the unpretentious but functional basket is a perfect fit. The sliding french door windows over the counter is flawless and functional. The vaulting was meant to be. The wood ceiling would not work with a flat ceiling, and knowing that cedar is soft and better up there. The ridge line and the the sliding window walls connects strongly to the outdoors. I would not have the concrete plinth extend from the fireplace but keep it flat with the floor to save precious floor space, but can be low seating. As a Pisces I appreciate the fish. The kids room was well-executed maximizing a single room into a 4 children,dogs/movie room, bravo. The lanterns in the bathroom, I would be hitting my head often. The pebble floor is again modest and restrained fitting the vibe. The Mid Century lamp was destined. The outdoor space and laundry combine functionality while maintaining continuity with the architecture.
Because of the weight of the Big Chill one doesn't notice the window and sink are not centered. the sink is centered on the window, so that's how it's seen, centered.
You did well - and the family love really comes across. (Perhaps you homeschool your adorable children?) The video was very watchable, thank you. I think most of us are baffled by the sprinkling of unhappy complaints in the comments section. Perhaps the lovely husband/wife rapport is stirring envy? 😉
What did you put on the maple cabinets in the kjtchen? I am trying to replicate. Is it a lime wash or a stain? Can you let me know what was used? Thank you I love how they look!
I love it! It reminds me of how beach cottages used to look like in my day - nothing fancy, eclectic, and vintage, and practical for the beach! I love the glass float light!

Fun place to kick back and relax! ❤
Loved it!!
Thank you so much!
Because of the weight of the Big Chill one doesn't notice the window and sink are not centered. the sink is centered on the window, so that's how it's seen, centered.

You did well - and the family love really comes across. (Perhaps you homeschool your adorable children?)
The video was very watchable, thank you. I think most of us are baffled by the sprinkling of unhappy complaints in the comments section. Perhaps the lovely husband/wife rapport is stirring envy? 😉
Haha aw thank you so much 🫶 we are doing a homeschool co cop with some of them 🤍
What did you put on the maple cabinets in the kjtchen? I am trying to replicate. Is it a lime wash or a stain? Can you let me know what was used? Thank you I love how they look!
It was a custom stain from the cabinet company Unique Kitchens & Baths
I love it!! Where are the bookcase/side tables from?
Thanks so much! They’re the “leftover” side table from my collection with Wood ridge furniture. (Available in our shop ) ❤️
Your new book is beautiful❤
Thank you SO much!!! 🤗🤗🤗🤍🌊
