I was just using a sewing machine today. This guy makes it look easy to stitch in consistent and straight lines, but I can tell you from my own experience that it takes real SKILL to do this. This was amazing craftsmanship in action; awesome! Thanks you John Hunt for sharing your valuable skills with us.
I think he also has guiding thing on that sewing machine that makes him sew in straight line along the edge... Well it seems like it im not sure since i dont understand any of this
After watching this video god knows how many times , I always swear I’m going to try this and get a proper machine. But I don’t. So after thinking about it for another minute I went to the fabric mart and bought a few yards of black vinyl pleather and some upholstery thread and needles and got to sewing by hand. It doesn’t take nearly as long as you might imagine and allows you to limit mistakes. I did pleats stitched from behind instead of diamonds and used black piping. All the stitching is done from the backside and is hidden. You just need to go fairly straight. Did it in a week’s worth of evening’s while I listened to music and podcasts. Just took my time and was lazy as possible about it. If you look at the construction of the factory upholstery ,it has been designed to be ingeniously simple and straight forward. I ended up using the curved type of needle that worked way better than the straight ones for getting through tough layers. There’s a little finger blood on the batting in a few places though.
I’ve been wanting to do upholstery so I watched another guy on yt. Bought an industrial sewing machine and some vinyl n went to work. It’s not easy but it’s not hard.
You sure will with that approach. Instead, why not try visualising the end (what you want as the outcome) in mind before your start, then plan the steps (follow the video), take your time, don't get angry, take your time, breathe, keep positive thoughts it is going to work out really well, stay in that mindset until you're finished. Then see how it turns out. Possibly better to try on a seat you don't need for your car. IOW, buy one from the wreckers to practice on first.
Skilled craftspeople always make it look easy. It takes years of practice to understand the technicalities of working with different materials and knowing how they respond when worked with, also joining two pieces of any fabric isn't always as easy as you'd think.
I'm determined to learn this, thank you so much for the guide. grandma's sewing machine is about to get a whole new purpose rather than collecting dust! Also I have to say well done, this is pure artwork and craftsmanship, you are really good at it!
Wow. Kudos to you, brother. just picked up a 1994 Mustang GT Convertible. I've done all of the mechanical work already, next is paint, then interior.. I feel like I know what I want my interior to look like now. Great work, bud!

Of course it's not easy. It's a trade 'skill' that needs to be learnt. That takes ability' dedication and time to perfect. To me this is the minimum standard. Imagine if that seat also had eyelets like those classic, Italian 60's sports cars. There are also those Edwardian button upholstered seats you might find in horse drawn carriages or vintage cars. A time served competent upholterer can't pick and choose. He/she's got to be able to do those too!

Your work is beautiful! I like to learn how to do custom car interiors. What would you recommend a beginner like me the tools to buy to get me started if you would please.

I did this to a 3 piece, two tone KTM motorbike seat. Was tricky as hell, and much less complex than this seat. It was easier to strip down, renovate and rebuild a Land Rover Defender rear axle, let's put it that way. First time for both. Seat did look good though, as did the axle :)

Hi John. This is really nice work and you make it look easy. I guess that's the mark of a pro. I have a leather seat bolster that needs replacing. I was thinking of going with a high grade synthetic leather material. I have a regular sewing machine. I just have a few questions that maybe you could answer. I know this is a 4 month old comment, but in reply to this, I did my own seat bolster repair a few months back with a non industrial machine and the correct needle. I am a mechanic and total novice on a sewing machine but with time & patience the repair came out looking very professional.
