- Freestyle skiing by the K2 demonstration team in 1971. They include Charlie McWilliams, Pat Bauman, John Clendenin, Bob Griswold, and Jim Stelling. From the film "The Performers" by Dick Barrymore.
I grew up on Vashon Island WA, the home of those K2 skis. Most of the people I knew worked at the ski Factory. Those are the only skis anyone on the island owned.
Awesome old school skiing
Brings back so many memories. Those were the days when a great series of recoveries could score very well. Current freestyle is impressive, but I miss the good old days 😊😊
Shortly after this came Phil and Steve Mahre on those AWSESOME 710 comps.
I had a pair of 207's, I was a MAN
After seeing this movie I convinced my parents to get me some K2s for a Christmas present I was so excited and had many awesome days on the slopes. Brings back some of the best memories of my life...thanks for the upload
Hi Chris, I remember those days, the K2 team came to Burke, VT where I happened to be patrolling that weekend, they were great and the party that followed was memorable (I remember it to this day!). We had the "ski bums" and the "ski bunnies". It was not called "free-style skiing" back then but "hot dog skiing". Wayne Wong from Western Canada came and watered our eyes with his exhibition - those were the days! Peace be with you, Ciao, L
lancelot1953 That sounds great I'm quite familiar with Wayne Wong as well as I'm from North Vancouver where he was an instructor on one of the local mountains prior to his hotdogging fame...he was crazy through the moguls! cheers
Used to rumble down Rendezvous in JH on my K2 Comp (4 stars) in 1973 !!! 207cm. Wicked boards.
Did we ski together , did you stay at the hostel
That red, white and blue base was the essence of cool. K2 5's
Like to see the kids today ski on those thin 205's. Just about impossible to land tricks. I had my K2's back in the 70's. Today's skis can do so much more than those old skis. You really needed to know your weight transfer to your down hill ski to make smooth turns. The newer technology saved the ski industry plus I hate to say it, so did snow boarding. Resorts were able to stay in business.
The Performers was why I moved to Aspen.
Incredible. All that on skinny skis! Great film!
AWESOME! glad to see someone stick a daffy in there
Fun to watch. Brings back memories. Thanks
Love that first scene of them skiing the chop. That was hot dogging!
my god mark - you are raising the bar with every video
Striped colored bases. One of the smartest marketing ideas in skiing history. Great film.
Those guys were good !Love the fact that I've seen the change from straight ski's to carve ski's.It's so much easier now and control is right under one's foot !
Great memories. Thanks for uploading this. Cheers.
Love it! This film had huge impact on the freestyle revolution. Working on a doc interviewing the pioneers and promoters of the sport. I've put a link to your clip on my production site. Thanks for posting this classic piece of history. Many in their 60's, these guys still are incredible on the hills.
K2 Winterheat. The ski everyone wanted to ski on in the NW.
I do believe in 1971 those were the K2 Comps.
I skied with them for a day in Winter Park 1980. They thought they could lose me on the steep, but I taught them a few things. A great day for me. Look at the first shot, those red boots were made out of stiff fiberglass that opened down the middle. They had zero flex. I forgot the name.
Raichle Red Hots
“They have the world’s greatest job…they ski.”
I feel like Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia used this video for inspiration in their "The Mountain" Episode.
Yes, just before the Winter Heats came out.
Thanks
Cheers
Бравые ребяты-акробаты! И это в 70-х!
Ski to Die...Live to Tell!
!!!RESPECT!!!
play that funky music!
Hot Dogg’n! Is that Sandy Nelson on drums?
Skiing moguls with 205 cm racing skis (not carving!) is the real deal.
omg every time they cut it there was a fall:D
No shape ski, no fat ski, just talent.
Yes, they raised the bar for new type of skiing known as "hot-dogging", which evolved into the more acceptable term, "freestyle". Mark
haha hilariously good. i wish i was as crazy as they are :(
Without no doubt they were good ;)
@chili5525
Thanks so much for posting this information. FYI, Dick Barrymore introduces Bob in another video segment I uploaded called "Sun Valley discovery, 1936, first American Ski Area". It is at the 3:37 mark in the movie. I will post information about his passing on that site as well. Mark
Schralping powder on 205s with zero waist width difference, not easy.
I prefer watching this than the new school moguls. Where are they?
I think these clips were taken at Aspen Mountain.
K2-4's and probably 204
What’s not to like?
these guys weren't fucking around
Hot Dog!
The first shot is a hoot, they look like jumping beans on skis.Makes you wonder when they don't show the landing. How's this for a difference between showing off and having real skills: Hot dogging is when you do out of control flips and end up crawling in the pow, free style is when you ski off in style and control.
These guys look insanely out of control...
I skied with them...they weren't...
Too bad that K2 had a reputation for simply delaminating back than.
