Yep. I used to see them all the time in Santa Barbara, but now I’m in a city with just BNSF, UP and metrolink. Chargers ruin all the fun for real railfanners.

They’re slowly taking the crescent… I’ve grown up watching P42s…. But one day while railfanning at Milepost 83.2 in my town I saw an ALC-42 for the first time I thought “so that’s what they look like?” Then earlier this year they started leading and the P42s rarely lead anymore..
@@TrainSpotterLiam2011 right? I think one charger has a interesting horn and that’s 334 but they aren’t getting rid of P42s anytime soon as they are repainting them into phase 7
New railfan here, I'm actually gonna be missing the P42DC's out on the line. Chargers are cool & all, but they can't replace the iconicness of the P42DCs (And somehow, my favorite Amtrak locos are Dash-8s of all things)
As a person who lives in South Eastern Region of NY, The Closest Thing I have to seeing the P40s and P42s on a Near daily Basis is the P32AC-DMs owned by Both Amtrak and Metro-North. Although I do get to see some on occasions and it will be tough to see them go in the coming years.
I’m Glad That I Still See P42s In The Iconic Livery (Pretty Sure It’s Phase 5 Or 6 It’s The Iconic One On P42s) And I’ve Never Seen An ALC-42 R.I.P P42s

I think my childhood is about to be ruined not only the ge genesis era are almost fading but the dash 8 and other locomotives that were part of my childhood
Similar here in Chicago, F40PH-2s are getting replaced by SD70MACHs. Some of those F40PH-2s have amazing horns, so it’s sad to see them go. Same thing with NPCUs on Amtrak, getting replaced by new trash Siemens train sets. Siemens should have never came to America. The F40PH will never die no matter what. (All of the footage of long distance Amtrak trains I recorded have a P42 leading)
No. It’s about how the chargers are starting to get more popular and the P42s are starting to fade away. Every railfan that’s been a railfan for quite some time grew up the P42s and we miss them very much
I liked the P42s and all but what’s wrong with the chargers? Railfans can’t ever accept change and this is what happened when the P40s replaced the F40s. I’m sorry but not everything lasts forever. The P42s are at the end and nowadays you can really tell when you see one, they have dents, peeling paint, or chipped paint. The P42s are what, 20+ years old now?
@@TrainSpotterLiam2011 I like planes and cars and RUclips recommend me this video as I am trying to become a rail fan. Please tell me what the difference is.
Simply put, if Amtrak wants to upgrade its locomotives, Siemens is the way to go. They're not just more modern, efficient, and eco-friendly, they're also the only game in town for new locomotives in North America. Sure, EMD made the F125, but only Metrolink jumped on that train and deliveries wrapped up back in 2022. MotivePower had the MP54AC, but they stopped churning them out after 2018. It's high time Amtrak bid farewell to the P42s. The Charger beats them hands down in fuel efficiency and emissions, thanks to its modern Tier-4 diesel setup. Plus, let's be real, Chargers look way slicker in my book. While P42s hold a special spot in Amtrak's history, the sooner they roll out, the sooner Amtrak steps into the modern, efficient rail game.
