    This story is half baked.... missing so many issues, and just pitting 2 sides against each other. which is sad

    The trollers have the right to fish for salmon. The big trawlers that are catching tons of fish via bycatch are the ones doing the damage

    21:06 saving the whales is a noble cause. Your story showcases how difficult it can be to make life altering decisions. Honouring everyone’ needs and perspectives can lead to mutually beneficial solutions that are not all or nothing. There is more at play than potential over fishing. Climate change, toxic poisoning of our waters and other environmental factors are bigger contributors but as one person in the video alluded to tackling these issues is daunting so instead we settle for the most expedient solutions. Humans and non-humans can coexist if there is political will to tackle the bigger issues.

    Need more fish hatcheries raising salmon

    • @davidbeckenbaugh9598
      @davidbeckenbaugh9598 8 месяцев назад

      In this news story, the wild fish conservancy rep says that hatcheries are not capable of making up for he fish humans use. But he wild fish conservancy are the ones that sued WA state to shut down the hatcheries because the hatcheries were interfering with and wiping out wild fish runs. Hatcheries in WA state are ow only allowed to produce just barely enough fish to keep the run going. On my neighborhood steam, Tokul Creek near Fall city, a good DAY would be around 200 fish caught. That was 25 years ago. Now a good YEAR is 200 fish caught. Hatchery releases have been caught over 75% for steelhead (also a part of killer whale diets). So we have a choice. More hatchery production and more fish for both the fishermen and the whales. Or less hatchery production and fewer fish for both the fishermen and the whales. Seems an easy choice to me.

    Are they endangered fish.?

  • @peace4peaceful
    @peace4peaceful 8 месяцев назад +2

    Eat a few orcas. Everything else is fair game and they aren't endangered. You need a balance. You can't just take fish and protect sharks and orcas. It throws everything out of whack. Tonnes of Salmon taken but no orcas. Pretty soon orcas are getting bigger schools..with less to eat.

    Why don’t you talk about what happens in the Puget Sound with all the ferry’s the giant commercial cruise ships that come through here all the giant barges the digging out of Elliot Bay all the toxins the lead that is washed off of these barges what about the ferries all the oil,break dust,rubber ect… that they spray off daily into the water But you wanna blame the fisherman in the boat come on it’s like the idiots that believe that the orcas only eat one type of fish I have videos of them eating seals harbor seals all different types of salmon. I live here in the Puget Sound and I see this every day it’s a joke that they think that they’re starving for fish. and the biggest problem is that these idiots feed these orcas so they stick around just like they do the homeless in the city. also have a video of orcas running from a whale watching ship that was literally chasing them through the sound.

    Trollers are destroying the resource GUARANTEED , IF ONE TROLLER CAUGHT 40 KINGS A DAY TIMES A FLEET TIMES A SEASON, THATS ALOT OF DEAD KING SALMON , FROM ONE GROUP OF INDIVIDUALS WHO THINK THAT THEY OWN THE RESOURCE , SHUT DOWN AND CLOSE COMMERCIAL FISHING FOR 7 YEARS AND LET THE RESOURCE RECOVER AND STOP BEING SO SELFISH AND GET OFF OF THE WATERS FOR AWHILE 😂

    • @kimstocks4485
      @kimstocks4485 6 месяцев назад

      trollers can only catch about 140 thousand kings a year. its half of what it used to be. if they shut the trollers down it wont help the killer whales...seiners and draggers kill 10 times more king salmon than the trollers. killer whales eat other salmon too. they love eating cohos just as much as king salmon. the main king salmon opening only lasts about a week. the sport charter fleet keeps growing every year. they are allowed to keep kings all summer. they can catch more kings than most trollers now days. killer whales are over populated now days. killer whales were rare to see when i was a kid. now i see them almost everyday in the summer season. 48 years commercial fishing in southeast alaska.

    To blame the trollers of SE AK for the lack of Chinook in the Salish sea is unreasonable. This is a line caught fishery. Let's take out the all the dams on the Columbia river where these salmon originate from. We have plenty we need to do to help bring back the kings. But this non-profit that put this case into action should be ashamed of themselves to blame the loss of chinook salmon on the Ak trolling fleet.

      The Dams on the Columbia will help the Columbia Chinook. It ain’t gonna save the Kenai or SE Alaskan Chinook. If you don’t know what you are talking about don’t talk. They don’t “originate” in the Columbia. Smdh😂 None of it addresses the ocean issues.

      Because they're scientists and you are some random basement hugger. This is like a caveman telling me how to start a fire or replace an iPhone battery. Just so you know, salmon, depending on the variety, does not cost $100 a pound. Also, they are expensive because the supply is low relative to demand.

    I thought most Native People had a cultural tradition of cherishing nature, but I guess the members of this tribes don't care about nature or the whales. This tells me that these Native Americans are no different than the White man who hunted the Buffalo to near extinction. Sharing just among yourselves is not enough and this tribe needs to share with all of nature. This may mean some people may need to inovate and find other means of livelihood. Like the piece suggest, if there's not enough fish for the whales, there soon won't be enough fish for the tribe.
