Sam Warburton , Welsh Rugby player, retired suddenly, before the next world cup, out of nowhere.

Andrew Luck had to Rehab all off season for 4 years straight due to injuries. Plus he and his wife were having their first child and he was tired of having to Rehab all the time. If Ryan Grigson would have protected him with an offensive line in his early years he would probably be still playing. I know they ended up getting players on the offensive line. But possibly Andrew Luck was injured again in the preseason and said "I can't do this anymore." Plus a Child on the way and 10 surgeries. Can't fault him for saying enough. His wife and new child. Helped influence that decision and good for him. Wants to be able to spend quality years with his children and have the health to do things with him. I know the timing really sucked when he retired. But he had to do what was best for him and his future.

Especially surprising with the type of style QB he was. He wasn’t a escape artist, avoiding contact type of QB. He was the brute physical type, he wasn’t scared to run it right up the middle and taking on a defensive player. Even from his Stanford days, theirs that awesome clip of his RB fumbling the ball and him sprinting down the field and absolutely destroying the LB that picked up the fumble. He was a generational talent and will have people wondering “what if” for a very long time.

I respect Luck for making that decision. A lot of armchair coaches don’t take into account that being a QB makes you public enemy #1 on the field. So, you end up taking shots on almost every single play both legit and cheap. That takes an unbelievable toll on your body and even more on your mental health. It’s no wonder the average NFL career for a QB is 2.5 seasons. That’s a tough fucking job, and Luck took the full frontal assault on a rebuilding Colts franchise. It’s amazing he lasted as long as he did with mid-tier O-lines that were constantly shuffling due to injuries. I don’t blame the guy one bit for choosing his life and his body over making a few extra million for other people’s entertainment.

Part of the problem is that injuries aren't respected until the pros, maybe a little in college now. I have a buddy who is a high school coach, and his philosophy is "football hurts. Get over it." Yeah, well, that kid that just rolled his ankle now has a forever nag because a bone wasn't broken or a ligament wasn't torn enough for you, the person not experiencing the injury and who has no PT or medical background, to validate it. The way we treat kid and young adult bodies is detrimental for sports and those people that do get injured young. Don't get me started on wrestler diets.

Colts front office sucked ass and ruined Luck’s talent while wasting his time and letting him get battered every single night by the other team.

Talented guy and intelligent, someone who actually put the league in a good place and got paid nowhere close to what the quarterbacks not even 10% talented as that dude. The colts should have protected him and I’m sure their investment in him would have paid dividends. It’s not mental when the team basically puts you out there to get a beating on every Sunday.

Being a good/great starting QB in the NFL has got to be the hardest job in professional sports
If your head and heart are not in ALL THE WAY, you can't do it successfully
Evidently this is where Andrew Luck was at.
As bad of a spot as he left the Colts in, he couldn't just mail it in for his last season

I retired from football after the season the eagles won the super bowl. As an eagle fan and a fantasy owner I had had enough pain myself without ever playing. But after that season I was undefeated in fantasy. Win it all never lost. My favorite team won it all. I was sick of seeing what I thought was men sacrificing their futures to win a game. It had made me sick to watch. Andrew retiring was the catalyst of my decision... my oldest son talked me back into fantasy and thusly football this past year. Only to see what happened to Demar Hamlin.. I'm glad to be watching again. But i really think the NFL needs to look at 2 things. Helmets and refs.

He didn't knock me out but gave a concussion. I realized right then that football wasn't my future 😂. Of course being 5'6" and 150 pounds was also the writing on the wall. "I'm surprised he didn't realize before," and then the younger brother stated, "If you are not all in." I am amazed that an NFL player would make these comments. The Colts did an awful job of developing their OL - even a casual fan could see that. He may still be in the league if the program tried to protect their franchise QB better. They could have looked at the Browns and what they did to Tim Couch to learn that lesson.

It was disappointing, the early parts, where they joke about Luck's comment, "It's not the healthiest way to live." The context of that comment was far from anything to do with the punishing nature of football - the hits - but how the mentality of being a quarterback - the control over everyone and everything - seeps into others areas of one's life. That's not healthy. If the Kelce brothers read the article, they did not comprehend it.
