I think Jeff is right. People have an idea of how skating should look and when it doesn't look the way they want it to then they'll hate. Personally i like that skinny sort of nerdy rocker emo haired skate style that jeff has. Also his tricks are gnarly techy and clean.

Love the podcast. I've been watching jeffwonsong for yeaaaars. In my opinion, all the hate has been generated from a place of jealousy, and also Jeff's style is not traditionally what we think about when we think about pro skaters. The crazy tricks that he throws are so crazy that sometimes they suffer in style. When you do a quad flip down a set, there's no way your gonna be able to backfoot catch and bone that shit out. People have wayyy to high expectations. Amazing skaters both of you.
I would never leave hate comments because that's just fucked, but Jeff did take some time to grow on me because of the style of hardflips and inward heelflips, and the tendency to time flip tricks to land at the same time instead of catching. I quickly came to respect him but skate culture drills style into your head pretty hard and that style of tricks isn't something we're conditioned to appreciate. Same thing with helmets really. It's good to protect your head but we all have some deep aversion to them.

Its a combination of factors, as is the case often times in life when dealing with people. In his case, the skate community didn't understand how to appreciate his skating, he came up through the internet, and to be honest he never made an attempt to refine his skating after dealing with the criticism. I think if started catching some tricks with height and style in a traditional form he would be extra appreciated for the bizarre spazzy tricks he does than he already is
