We spoke with prisoners, teachers and those in charge of running Mountjoy Prison about daily life, gang culture, drugs and the tides of change in Ireland's most recognisable prison
I went to school with a very quiet, introverted, nerdy, girl who was also a beautiful person with goodness glowing from her smile. In the 5 years of secondary school the only subject where she got less than an A on a regular basis was for Art. Everyone knew she would go to Trinity and excel in whatever she did. I met her about 10 years after we finished school and she was working as a language teacher in Mountjoy prison. I couldnt believe someone who was so shy and slight looking would work in such a tough environment. The prisoners were blessed with someone so smart and consistent.
@@chipdouglas6650 I never doubted how deep she was for a minute. The fact that I knew her for five years and in that time she came across as very shy and reserved and physically she was very slight so I was really surprised she took on such a hardcore role. I always knew she was a beautiful person as I mentioned above and am not surprised for a minute that she wanted to help others.
@@WakaWaka2468 Well you should care and you should be happy knowing there are some really good people out there who devote themselves to helping others. She could've gone off to some financial institution and made a fortune for herself but she chose to help these men reform themselves.
I really took a strong dislike to Pat when he interviewed Pete Doherty. Pete came over to Ireland in terrible snowy weather especially for the show and he basically scorned him for the entire interview and the cameraman kept zooming in on his nails that were dirty looking probably because Pete was doing drugs. He didnt have one ounce of compassion for Pete and I wondered why he had him on the show at all. A complete ignoramus.
Privatise the prison system. Reform the Irish judicial system and there'll be less criminals on the streets of Ireland. The American and Russian prisons are brilliant.
Privatise the prison system? You think that if a prison is run as a business, where private institutions would make money per prisoner, that would somehow lead to less criminals on the streets?

Sorry to say my friends across the pond, if one of your prisoners ever was in an American prison they would be pissing their jumpsuit right now. Such a difference, no offense. *pun
I’m sorry but the conditions in American prisons are inhuman, not worthy for a dog let alone a person. The whole prison system in a he U.S is corrupt to the core who prey on the uneducated, impoverished parts of society, with harsh sentences for minor crimes, here in Europe thank God we believe in second chances & the rights of human a being.
Ive been in four prisons in ireland including mountjoy when there was no teles or toilets, i was attacked and stabbed in one of those prisons but the rest was pretty easy in terms of not having to fight etc.. i agree with what your saying, i hated prison in ireland and couldnt wait to get out of it. I dont think i would piss myself but id be more on edge in a prison overseas because of the pressure to act in certain ways id rather not, like joining gangs and watching over my shoulder every min of the day. Thank god i left that life behind me over 12 yesrs ago.
