    This webinar was perfectly timed! I am a student at another herbal school currently working through my Nutritive Herb unit-- and this is a fantastic companion piece. "Bio-availability" is something I only have a vague concept of from some distant dietary class in college, but it's seems its a pretty necessary consideration regarding nutrition and natural medicine-- and definitely something I'm going to have to research in the context of the herbs I'm studying.
    Thank you for posting this!

    Thank you Maria! I was wondering how much calcium is in a standard infusion of oatstraw - now I know! ❤

      Yay! FYI the #s are a theoretical calculation in that it's the approx/max (recorded) content in the dried herb that you use to make the tea... but we don't really have much data to tell us how much truly gets extracted into a cup of tea. (The only study I've seen was on nettle tea and while hardy any was extracted it was such a flimsy tea - just a tiny bit of dry herb and about 4 min steep - that it's not a good representation of the way we make nutritive teas.) I'd LOVE someone with nutritive analysis equipment run tests to see how much mineral extraction actually occurs in the various tea styles vs the crude plant.

    When harvesting nettle can you use the stems along with the leaves when cooking it down to freeze in ice cube trays? What are the benefits and uses of nettle tincture? Thank you for your time, knowledge, and information. I now live in a 5 stage senior living community and I am very fortunate that we have 300 plus acres and have wetlands, woodland and prairie. I was sooooooo delighted to find a huge area with nettles. Mother Nature is awesome.

      Oh that's so lovely to have access to plants/wild/land AND community senior living! I hope to find someplace cool like that when I get older. :) Definitely be mindful of sustainable wildcrafting practices and land history (including contamination, heavy metals) when wildcrafting. As far as harvesting, we usually do a harvest very early in the season while the stems are still tender and they don't need to be removed. If you harvest as they get bigger and stems are sturdier, it's better to remove the leaves. (The stems get very tough and stringy, which may not be pleasant. They have used nettle stem fibers to make durable hemp-like fiber and ropes.) And, you will want to harvest in spring/before they flower. By the time they get to flowering age, the leaves may develop constituents that are a bit irritating the the kidneys.

    Vinegar evaporates so won't taste strong after simmering awhile. Adele Davis cookbook a long time ago mentions calcium in broth with the vinegar trick

    Wilted nettle infused oil is amazing. If you hant tried that yet. I encourage you to try!

      @MariaNoelGroves  6 месяцев назад +1

      Cool! I've done vinegars but have not done oil (I assume as a culinary??) due to the risk of botulism in herb-infused oils if you don't consume them within a week. We're so microbe-prone out here in this climate. Alas I don't think we have nettle in the new home but perhaps I'll plant some (to the chagrin of my husband) this spring!

      @MariaNoelGroves Histamine related rashes especially when paired with Goldenrod, stings, burns, vulnerary, anelgesic, antiflammatory. I love pairing this infused oil with other herbs too and I don't have much too back this up other than theory but I feel like when it's infused fresh it possibly Infuses the folic acid in the oil. That seems to work as a strong synergist for other herbs it's paired with.

      very cool! I will totally have to try that next timeI have the chance to harvest fresh nettle! (between the new house and heading out of country for most of spring, may not have the chance this spring but hopefully soon) I've never worked with nettle this way and have made a note in my "to make" files to try it. Thanks for sharing!@@creaturesgreatandsmall9957

    I've just recently found you and really appreciate your style and sharing, thank you for the side notes also. Wanted to mention that there is a way to eat horsetail shoots that is just divine and so simple, it's called Tsukudani horsetail (How to cook & eat Horsetail - Japanese side dish/foraging) here on youtube, I'm craving it right now and wish i'd picked those shoots this weekend but was too intent on morel hunting.

    Hi Maria. You may not see this question since your video was three months ago. My question is regarding Ashwaganda. Is is true that its best way of getting the benefits of A is taking it in powdered form, vs a tincture? Thanks

    • @MariaNoelGroves
      @MariaNoelGroves  2 месяца назад +1

      Many herbalists do prefer it powdered and that is a great way to take it - often in warm fatty milk to deliver it for nervous system. But I often do work with it as tincture and definitely find it beneficial in that form too. Dose wise it’s easier to get more from powder but I find 1-2 ml tincture has plenty of activity for supporting energy, thyroid, mood. If you wanted it’s iron though then powder would be better since alcohol doesn’t do a good job extracting minerals. I find it’s sufficient for steroidal saponins (the main adaptogen constituents) and many other constituents. I usually do 1:5 dry coarsely ground root in 50 or 60% alcohol (100 proof is 50%). I find Indian is more potent/energizing/stimilating/thyroid boosting than the USA grown in VT or OR, which is gentler. I like both and will vary which I use based on the person.

    NO SUGAR

    • @MariaNoelGroves
      @MariaNoelGroves  2 месяца назад +2

      true that no sugar is better for most of us! sometimes there is a place for a little bit of it in the context of a healthy diet or, for example, if it helps avoid hypoglycemic effects from drinking a strong nutritive tea throughout the day/between meals (which may occur for some people) - or a little bit if a yummy sauce that makes people enjoy eating healthier foods like veggies, or the occasional splurge to enjoy cultural food ways and social time. But definitely we would be healthier to limit or completely avoid sugar

      If you want short, simple videos, there are probably better herbal teachers for that. I'm known more for oversharing than brevity, which works for some people but not others. There are so many great herbal teachers, each with a different style that will speak to one or another. (And some days I'm more focused than others. This was my first class of the year and in a new home and different tech, so still getting into the groove. I did it for free as a way to give myself a dry run to get things going.)
