To me, the whole thing felt like the origin story of a comic book villain, if you leave out the ending that reveals he's caught in a time loop of his own making. Meek scientist guy obsessed with time acquires the power to travel through time and uses it for nefarious deeds, to get back at the world for not recognizing his scientific mind.

Classic sci fi paradox , very stylish , Sound track was perfect , short film making at its very best , Mike Pappa has mastered the silent film genre , not easy to tell a story without words , and proper stop time animation instead of effects - priceless .

Some of the best sci fi on RUclips. Music was perfect...and the whole thing without dialogue yet basically understandable.
Here's my quandary: what could a person take back in time to trade with ancient Romans if it would not effect the present, and stipulating that no modern materials or tech could be taken back? Sort of a "Prime Directive" but vis-a-vis time-travel. What could you swap for their gems, gold and silver? Tobacco, of course, but...not so ethical. For what would they be willing to part with their booty on a pound for pound basis?

There’s a simplicity of this that so reminds me of an animated short...wonderful visuals, great character development through those visuals...suspense built perfectly, a motivational arc that seems very real to life, despite the comment I read from another. This is why I love film. Great job.

I love time travel stories that respect the Novikov self-consistency principle - basically meaning we cannot alter an event that has already happened, time loops (CTCs) must be consistent, and this story does an excellent job in that regard. The thing that intrigues me is that the page the guy takes with him is trapped in a time loop and at the end of it the guy adds another piece of tape to it. If the time loop is consistent, shouldn't the page have already an infinite amount of tape on it?

I believe that was so, because winning the talent show was something he did with his father (with whom he was very close) before he died. After losing his father, he became obsessed with keeping his memory alive through something they had common interest in, which was science. So yes, he was very excited about the watch, but at the same time he still had something very important to complete. At least that's my take on it.

I watch a lot of so called "Award Winning" short films that now RUclips is riddled with. I always start off with absolutely no expectations because I want to be amazed by the potential of an idea that some random RUclipsr had thought of, spent time and money to film it and then put it up for our, the viewer's, scrutiny.
More often than not, a minute into the film and I end up clicking on one of the "Suggested Videos" or the RUclips logo at the top of the page. Most of the times, the reason is poor acting, and often childish cinematography. Other times it is simply the director's choice of camera movements just because they thought it would look cool irrespective of the intent.
Frankie jumped high over any other short films I have seen so far. It has a gripping story, excellent acting, fantastic camerawork and tight, clean editing. Frankie-ly (see what I did there), I am a fan of time-travel movies and movies which let the viewers do the thinking. I wish I could boast that I understood everything in the first view itself, but I am excited enough with the entire execution of this film that I can watch it many times more, possibly omitting details deliberately, just to find a reason to watch it again. This is a movie that everyone should learn from.
Mike Pappa, please keep making meaningful cinema!

Thanks. Glad you like the concept. The time period is ambiguous and never stated. If anything the hook is lazy set dressing rather than anachronistic. :)

There is evidence of possible escape. 1) he did not check to see if the bludgeoned person was truly dead. 2) no initial information about who the bludgeoned really was at beginning - a rational person would plan around this.

My argument was he wasn't rational in that regard.

Even though the denouement could be seen a mile off it really didn't matter. It's an old story told beautifully. Stark lighting, perfectly framed, simply told. Captivating. Now go tell Hollywood how to make good movies.
