- When a down-on-his-luck inventor builds a time machine to change the past, he unwittingly sets off a disastrous chain of events.
This short film was made based on the following constraints:
• Cannot take place entirely in one location.
• Someone must say the words "time travel."
• Two characters must have a long-standing rivalry.
• When one character was a kid, he/she used to wish he/she could travel back in time to see real-life dinosaurs.
• One character is a wine lover and is very picky/elitist about their wine.
• One character prefers bubble baths to showers.
• Someone has to say: "I have to go back."

I just noticed that the “Twel- Twelve-O-Seven” was because James already knew what time it was, and instinctively said it but realised he had to look at the clock for appearances. Great attention to detail.
Wow
Woah
Agreed. Noticed that at the end when he said it again, and had to go back to check if that’s how he said it the first time
Yes
The look of terror on the dogs face as he watches himself run up was the best part of the movie. Give that pup the Oscar!
I wonder how they scared the dog to get that
Lol
he didn’t do nothing…
I loved that! That was hilarious! Poor dog!
What a moron. As if they inflicted terror upon this dog to make a short film. 🙄
Full detailed Explanation: This is one timeline. We see people exist at the same time temporarily but in the end, only one of each character exist.
Prestory: Howard built the time machine and James comes with a fake funding letter to convince Howard from stopping the project and to steal the invention (because Howards is better).
Perspective Howard:
11:04 Start of the scene. To show his invention Howard goes into the time machine and becomes Howard#1.
11:59 Girl in Bathtub, Howard#1 shows up and goes slowly back, he reaches the house by 12:07.
12:07 Howard#1 sees the dead Howard#3, James#2 explains that Howard#2 killed Howard#3 and talks him into using the time machine again. Howard#1 becomes Howard#2.
12:02 Ring in Pool, Howard#2 runs back to the house and reaches there by 12:05.
12:05 He comes into the room, asks James (who doesn't know a thing) who will be killed and shoots out of panic at Howard#3. Then he uses the time machine at becomes Howard#3.
12:00 Howard#3 lands on the bed, runs back to his house, realizes his mistake, and gets killed by Howard#2 at 12:05.
12:05 Howard#3 (the final) is sadly dead.
Perspective James:
12:04 Start of scene. James sees Howard jump into the time machine.
12:05 Directly after that, Howard#2 runs in, asks who will be killed, shoots Howard#3 out of panic and goes into the time machine again.
12:06 James (thinking that Howard is dead) takes the power source and drives away.
12:07 James#2 stops him and makes him bring the power back and hide behind the time machine. Howard#1 comes in and James#2 convinces him to use the time machine again.
12:08 James goes into the time machine and becomes James#2.
12:03 James#2 runs out of the house to stop James from driving away, he reaches there by 12:06.
12:06 James#2 brings the power source back (James just watches)
12:07 James#2 convinces Howard#1 (who comes running in and sees the dead Howard#3) to use the time machine again (so that he would kill himself)
12:08 James#2 sends James into the time machine.
12:09 James#2 (the final) drives away with the power source.
Chronological:
11:59 Howard#1 arrives at bathtub
12:00 Howard#3 arrives at bed
12:02 Howard#2 arrives at pool
12:03 James#2 arrives somewhere.
12:04 James meets Howard at his house. (Howard uses the time machine.)
12:05 James sees Howard#2 kill Howard#3. (Howard#2 uses the time machine.)
12:06 James takes power source and meets James#2, they go back to the house.
12:07 Howard#1 meets James#2. (Howard#1 uses the time machine.)
12:08 (James uses the time machine.)
12:09 James#2 leaves with the power source.
Yes, but how did the James cycle start? James 2 tells James 1 exactly what to do, but it's a chicken-egg scenario since the now James 2 is only giving the orders he heard as James 1.
PREDESTINATION PARADOX
@Tim Malle Thank you! Finally the correct way to explain this. All these other people in the comments section who are completely full of shit saying they understand and "ohhh, it's quite intuitive actually, you just don't comprehend quantum mechanics bla bla bla" can go f*** themselves. Tim Malle deserves a medal. Thank you sir!
Why did James come to Howard with that case for the time machine as if he already knew Howard made it?
but how'd there every get to be a howard#3 in the first place the first loop there wouldnt have been a howard 3 to die. Unless James shot him the first time.... which makes him the real genius
I love to finally see a character that isnt crazy, that is logical enough to not only not act on impulse, but plan its actions trough time travel and also logical enough to collaborate with himself, i dont care that it is the villain

Travel through time where there is no tomorrow! Ha ha hs
It's complicated!
Lmfao dude
Wow! This blew my mind. Only thing I would bring up is the Earth is not only spinning but traveling quickly through space in orbit around the sun. Assuming Howard is transported to the exact same location, 5 mins may have been enough to transport Howard somewhere high in the sky, deep down in the Earth, in an ocean or other country, or worse in outer space!
Exactly.
One problem there though. The earth AND Howard are both confined to the same plane of time. Therefore five minutes ahead or behind the earth is going to be where it would be the same as if it traveled five minutes. They are only traveling through time so every single increment of time will have a point in space. And being Howard is ON earth it will be exactly that same way. They in this sense are technically NOT two objects. Hard to explain via texts, but lets say. At 12:00am Jan 1st, 2019 the earth and howard will be at precise certain points in space at said time. Now if they MOVE THROUGH time they will simply be fast forwarding to said spots they would be after 5 minutes of travel time through physical space. Hopefully that makes sense.
This is Dr Who style time-travel; Time And Relative Dimension In Space (Tardis). But you are correct: 1 minute ago 'here' was [edit*] 1140 miles away, & if time-travel DOESN'T conserve orbital momentum (*19 miles a second, so it's reckoned), the best chance of survival is to go about dawn in a space craft.
*OMG HOW ARE YOU HERE?!!!😱😱😱*

Stephen Hawking "If time travel would be possible we already have visitors from the future".
....or from the past.
He had said that and did a funny little thought experiment sitting at his tea table and no one arrived. He assumed since that experiment will definitely be talked about in the future, then someone who actually invents TT someday would pay a visit, .. but Stephens definitely didn't think of it like this or didn't want to: why would someone risk changing the future by visiting him in a publicly recorded experiment?
But what if they have already left?
@@Kyanzes Possible that they were disgusted.
, yes - but they would know NOT to make themselves public under ANY circumstances, already knowing the bad outcomes from the first time they were captured by government agents, intensely studied in a lab, interrogated with brutality, and finally vivisected for science.
NO = You NEVER tell anyone you are from the future, that's need to know only basis, and no one in the past needs to know !
The writer of this must be a genius for comprehending this in their imagination
I like how people complain that you have to add the earth's movement in space to the rotation. But if you ignore this and Howard just has to run back the distance to his house that he made through 5 minutes of our world's rotation, that means in the video he is actually able to run 993 miles per hour (1598 km/h). RESPECT.
Travelling five minutes back in time without also moving through space would leave you NINE THOUSAND KILOMETRES from your starting point based upon the orbital velocity of Earth (not even taking into account the solar galactic orbit or the galaxy's own velocity, which would multiply that distance). Given that it's the middle of the day, and assuming that his own inertia is unchanged, he would find himself floating in darkness, and would have a few scant seconds to marvel at the stars before he passed out (and thereafter rapidly expired).
He'd deserve it anyway - someone who can build a time machine but (1) tests it first on his dog rather than an inanimate object (evidenced by his lack of anticipation of the results), (2) looks for the dog inside the box even though he's just sent it back in time (meaning it would have appeared in the box before he started, and the box would now be empty), (3) does not consider the consequences of time travel without moving through space, and (4) can't put the sequence of observed events into an order that makes logical sense before running to his own death (and even shoots himself in order to prevent himself from shooting himself, but forgets he did so as he runs back in through the same door) is simply too stupid to live.
He'd be too stupid to build a time machine, in fact. o.O
Or maybe he just became obsessed with the calculation, obviously took into account the rotation, inclination, orbit of sun, milky way, etc... but made a rounding error... or maybe his experiment altered the universe by that much and he should've measured that so he could take it into account too :-p
You must be fun at parties

Sci-fi technology always requires flashing lights.

That's to symbolize the shockwave of breaking the time barrier. Just like reaching mach speed and breaking the sound barrier has the accompanying sonic boom that shatters windows, the time shockwave makes lights flicker... aggressively.
And charge travels at the speed of spilled coffee.
RGB LEDs is the special power that transforms that stack of old stereo, phones, lawn box, and PC equipment into a time machine.
This will be a documentary in the past ...

As long as the rotation of the Earth is being taken into account, so does the movement of the solar system and the movement of the galaxy. Time travelers would end up out in space :)
Michael House Lol had the same idea a while ago: that a time machine should be onboard a rocket to go back to the starting point. But Einstein said there is no absolute reference point soo maybe earth is the reference point, and you wouldn't change place after all, just like water keeps falling down in a moving car.
Headaches again, i love timetravel but i hate it at the same time !
son of sparda the reference point would be the point earth was at when the time traveler left/
Michael House My thoughts and calculations, exactly!
Michael House But if space and time are connected through the fabric of space time, he should also travel through space and time although he said he traveled only through time but because the fictional character didn't realize spatial movement
nadjim73 He did travel through space and time. Which is why he didn't end up in the box when he was done. The issue is, he moved through space in an illogical way.
I love how they use current, low tech-ish devices to make this high techie thing.
A proximitor housing, a thermo bulb from a switch, the indicator window on a valve positioner etc.
kind of funny in it's own way.

This short film is great becuase its ALL the time travel paradoxes mixed up into one very realistic short film ! Well done! If this where real, the loop would go on forever...
It did
Yes… but forever for the same 10 minutes. In the past. The next paradox would be : where would the running ( !… ) character get his energy from without ever eating and sleeping ? And another would be the slow but unavoidable depletion of oxygen on earth. Correct me if i am wrong, but I am from the future, about two years from you, and 5 month from the one who responded to you. Or you both might be the same person. I am almost sure I am not, but I’71 so who knows ? I might have just forgotten… 🥸
@@Ukobold nope, neither character runs forever. they each live one continuous life. you can plot their lives on a timeline to see for yourself.
@@Ukobold no, you see the one dude travels couple of times back and eventually dies while the other dude travels one time back in time and steals the device. The loop goes on forever but the characters themself get replaced by new "copies" of themself in the loop.
@@RockZerr It's not a loop the dude only time travelled three times and in the third time he gets killed. So, he just dies and there is no loop.
this short is a masterpiece of a time paradox. I guess that's why Dr. Brown never wanted the time machine to fall into the wrong hands
Yes. I agree with you. It is a paradox. And Doc. Brown was right about the wrong hands. And trying to keep track of all the Howard's s a cool twist to it.
My short film paradox : ruclips.net/video/bcqHVhVeykY/видео.html
Wait, what? This isn't a paradox tho🤨.
What part is self contradictory?
Following the film logic here are the instructions to build the time machine:
1. Collect a lot of electronic equipment.
2. Connect the equipment randomly until the future you visits you and tells you that the machine is working and you should use it to tell the past you that is working.
3. Profit.
Everyone knows the correct order is:
1. Collect a lot of electronic equipment.
2. Connect the equipment randomly until the future visits you and tells you that the machine is working and you should use it to tell the past you that it is working.
3. ????????
4. Profit.
Don't forget the immortality.
Well of course. That's what my future self told me when he arrived.
I've been stuck on step one for 36 years. Haven't tried to make a time machine yet. Not sure when I'm going to start, but that's irrelevant.
It's actually like this (Gru's plan meme template):
-Invent a time machine
-Demonstrate it to your rival
-Find your dead body
-Get killed by yourself
It’s at times like these I like to remember that all time is happening all the time. Just because you’re not in the same time as someone else, doesn’t mean that other time isn’t going forward.
This was simultaneously the most confusing and amazing short that I’ve ever watched.
Awesome film; professional shot - extremely well acted - great locations and sets. LOVE it!!
absolutely love the scarf. Its trapped in an endless loop. That simple exchange made each of the infinite scarves shift ownership one over to the previous version.
+Unique and Hilarious Username Correction: the past self's scarf went onto the future self, bypassing several minutes. So instead of being in a loop, it basically took a bypass.
+Unique and Hilarious Username +finitefilms In fact if it loops enough time, it will start to wear off and alterate the initial loop. In fact enven if it seems that there isn't any paradox the whole thing is. It only work if you look at it from the outside of the loop. Try to folow the events with the eyes of one of the characters : the "bad guy". The Idea of turning back in time to prevent himself from taking the core and being dicovered was implemented by his future self who got it from his future self, again and again and again ... It's a very interesting version of the "paradoxe de l'écrivain" (sorry I don't know the english equivalent). The same goes for the killing, it only emerged because his future self already killed himself. The shot has no cause and come from nothing enven though it's the cause of every thing. I'm not saying it's bad, in fact I found It awesome, I'm just pointing out the paradoxes. Great job !
+Timcampy TheGolem it's called the ontological paradox. Look it up
Jared Rice the scarf isn't in an ontological paradox, though. it went FROM a past self TO a future self.
+Thomas Riley no I understand, I meant how the people were in an ontological paradox not the scarf, I completely agree with you
1. If Jim haven't been there Howard would still have been alive. So, there must have been a third Jim who told the first Jim to go to Howard with a that exact suitcase.
2. And also, if Jim figures out that Howard will know that he has stolen the time machine, So there must have been a timeline in which Howard didn't die and Catches Jim for stealing the time machine but some how Jim still manages to use it to create this new time line in which he didn't get caught. Thus at least one time travelling instance is missing from this short film.
1. Jim could later go back in time. Maybe with better machine so he could go back in time safely more than 5 minutes
2. Just think. Something important is gone and Howard would not notice that?
We know that Jim faked the letter, so clearly Jim knows that he isn't the better scientist and wants to trick Howard into giving up early. So Jim is probably already the kind of guy who will steal another guy's work.
What I want to know is how he knew that he just needed to steal that one part, and what size to cut the foam in the suitcase for?
Also keep in mind that Howard didn't figure out the Earth rotation thing until after he went back the first time.
i was thinking the same thing.
@Star Saber
Jim said he was already on his way. He had made the letter as a way to trick Howard. Jim didn't know about the time machine, yet knew that Howard was the better inventor. He planned to trick Howard into stopping his research and stealing whatever Jim had.
How he had the suitcase set up with the perfect sized hole for the cog... that I can't explain.
I think the first time around Jim shot Howard and got away with it which is what started the loop,
And the best actor award goes to . . . Mollie! A masterful performance that outshines the two legs.
This film really shows how time travel would work. If you go back you won’t be able to prevent anything from happening. You would only be able to see it happen again.
If you want to travel two minutes later, just wait two minutes... 🤣🤣
Correct. Any other displacement in time also displaces you in space, which avoids paradoxes.
How does time travel lead to space travel?
@@rajarshimukherjee4844 If you travel back in time by just 1 minute, you will also be translated 1 light-minute away. So even if you transmit a signal back to Earth, it has to arrive after you left, avoiding potential paradoxes. Nature does not tolerate paradoxes.
@ankurbohra04 In order to prevent paradoxes, which are impossible in nature. A signal by light is the fastest way to communicate back in time. But if you are also translated a light-minute away, your signal will take one minute to reach its destination. That prevents any possible paradox caused by a signal being received before it is sent.

All these time travel movies are not entertaining at all when you already know the plot of "killing grand father causing the main character himself to disappear". Again and again. Nonsense and nonsense. Congress should be pass a law to ban making this kind of movies.
Oce Gaming !...i am a screen writher..this subject is prodictable over and over before..u can watch "project almanic" and altough the breliant movie "predestination" and enjoy whit ur self
jamal faris can i just say for a screen "writher" u have some horrible spelling.
So, your a screen distorter?
And whats "prodictable" is how full of shit you are.
U sure are a "breliant" screen distorter.
I'll hit you up if I ever move into a cylinder.
Sci-fi films are Just amazing once you started to watch it than you become addicted to it
I didn’t completely understand all of the time jumping, but I completely enjoyed this anyway.
Neither do I but all I can get is
It's a paradox a time cycle which will never end 😶
@@nerdyeditor4747 I watched it 3 times.. wish this were a full movie.
this is the first piece of media THAT I SEEN that factored in the rotation of the earth with time travel
Everytime the excitement makes the inventor more complex thoughtful
Well, this is a coincidence. I randomly am watching this on July 1, 2019. 🤔
I must have been transported to the future because I'm watching it on July 3rd 2019...Let me hit this bong again...
Bruh July 3rd here
No. You've watched this several times before actually.
21September 2019
what movie is this?
But how did the rival already have the perfect container to keep it in when he showed up unaware of time travel? Makes me wonder what he already changed before the start of the video.
did he place the gun on the desk?
@@aimymyers403 Yes. Howard had it just in case something went "horribly wrong" with the dog.
Good point but my guess is that Howard asked for it to hold his "invention", and told James the needed dimensions. James just took advantage of it.
but it wasn't made for it, if you notice its for an oblong object, the "time machine" piece seen was squarish, go back and check it... it just happened to still be able to fix in the case (but you could be right re reason WHY it was there, despite the different form fit)
The rival showed up with the intent of stealing 'something', but he did not know yet, what he would be stealing. Maybe he saw a picture of the tool, or the protagonist accidentaly bragged about it some days earlier.
This does NOT seem like a video that woulda been made 12 years ago... Such high quality for such an old youtube video.
That is one well written time travel short. Probably the best I have ever seen. This one should have won Best Short Screenplay for a Tier 1 festival.
+Film News Report I am running a Tier 4 festival called RUclips Film Festival if that helps.
I guess these guys even made an original sound track for this film! With a small orchestra no less! I love how the ticking of a clock is embedded in the score. Well done!
Start the video with the most adorable dogs ever. You have my full attention
Ok. This is maybe one of the best short film about time travel I've ever seen before!!!!
Well done! The aspect of being in a different place when "reappearing" is brilliant. Of course, the earth would move from time of event, so this is a great twist and way of looking at time travel
Craig Sibley and just more chances of ending into a wall, that scares me each time. I would never time travel for this reason, I don't want to find a pickle jar in place of my foot.
Craig Sibley I agree, it is a valid point, but I presume the earth would have moved a lot more than a few blocks in the minutes he travels back here, because not only does the Earth rotate around its own axis, but also around the sun, and along with the suns motion through the Milkyway, and the Milkyway itself and so on. He might have ended up somewhere between the Earth and the Moon or inside the Earths mantle. Food for thought. Excellent short movie either way, very very well made.
+lynvingen space is relative anyway (defined in terms of a reference point) so I don't know how exactly one could translate coordinates between different times.
+lynvingen even if you don't take into account the movement of the galaxies and such.. the rotation would be over 80 miles in those 5 minutes
This is actually not a new thing though. First I read about this was in a short story from Isaac Asimov.
Michael and Alex, very well written concept and actors did a great job. Honestly i thought our hero gonna be stuck in the time loop.
The problem with time travel is that not only do you have to travel through time, but also through space. Space and Time are interwoven.
Finite Films, this was one of the most incredible, thought-provoking motion pictures I have ever seen in my life!! A+ across the board. 👍🏻👍🏻
Agreed. I've yet to watch one I didn't love.
If this were real he would've ended up in space
You are correct the earth is spinning around it's axis, the earth is traveling around the sun, the sun is moving around the galaxy and the the galaxy is on its way to Andromeda. Time is only one dimension of four.
Unless of course it affects time AND space, as you would obviously build it as anyone who's actually building a time machine would understand this very basic thing you saw in a youtube video a week ago.
originalyithlan I've always wondered if it is possible to stop time for physics .. by increasing the speed of movement without distorting the space, time slows down, right? at what speed of movement does it stop? in the hypothesis of being able to physically stop in space in a total way (which is almost impossible since we have no references to understand what is really still) how would time flow? more quickly than on earth?
originalyithlan it is very clear thanks, so I arrived to travel at the speed of light compared to the observer not only would I see him slow down but in the end I would not see him anymore because even the light that travels from him to me would stop making it impossible to see him .. right?
original, thank you very much for your availability, I wish you a happy new year!
In other comments, observations are noted regarding whether or not time travelers would end up in space, conflicts of spatial events, and so forth. Let 'em go, guys. If you're going to suspend belief enough to play with the five-minute time-bounce to create the looping effect, just enjoy the story for its own cleverly designed sequence of amusements. Most sci-fi of this sort is "soft science," which means that certain elements are included while others are ignored, all for the sake of enjoying the story. Let it be fun! Within the parameters set by the story (not by scientific fact), it works, and works well. Kudos to the creators for a delightful, well-produced bit of temporal shenanigans!
The thing is that they attempted to explain it and totally botched it, and this was very distracting. No explanation at all would have been better writing. In sci-fi you're supposed to get one big suspension of disbelief and everything else must follow logically. This failed to do that.
Best short film about timetraveling ever
When the future is in the past and the past in the future. Messed up. Brilliant.
This short film has a thumbs up for creativity. Kind of makes you think "what if"
This was awesome!
hey mate
Hi
Indeed
*spike the dragon voice* "I thought getting shot would be future howard's problem... but now I AM future howard"
Ha
I remember that
A whole movie out of it would be the complex amazing one.
I love all the talk about the impossibility of time travel and the paradoxes.....
I just watched a made up story about made up science and made up paradoxes and made up rotation of the sun and universe....... and,
Was entertained - I think that is the absolute point!

Well said. I love the way some people try and show how clever they are, but forget how stupid they are not to take into consideration that the initial concept isn't possible in the first place! That's why it's called sci-FI and not fact. You don't have to be Einstein to watch sci-fi, just enjoy it
I struggle to believe that someone who was clever enough to invent a time machine would be stupid enough to do that. That was still awesome though :D
Wow! Very clever and executed idea. Some amazing film stuff in here. Great use of cinematography and story telling. Great technical stuff!
Thoroughly enjoyed the film, just right amount of dark humour, well written & well acted.
This was an excellent work, and the only minor letdown was the lack of a solid ending. I think a lot of well-made shorts are actually concept films for either full-length movies or tv shows.
It’s a shame that these well-made shorts can’t just have an ending. That wouldn’t stop it being made into a movie or TV show. THX-1138 started out as George Lucas’ film school project, and it was made into a pretty cool movie.
I need a full series on this episode alone..... The same for the other episodes!
I can't believe how many time travel short films there are.
They are in time loop which will never end
