Are Magazines Worth Money? How I Sell Them

  • I give a short introduction in my experience in dealing with magazines, their values and how I go about selling them. The main points of this video is that there is no substitute for handling the material first hand. Educate yourself so when you're in a shop or on a book pick you can quickly sift through the material, zeroing in on hopefully the prized publications within the bunch. Piecemealing large magazine collections out as well as bundling certain pockets of decades, years, months etc. together has been the key for me in moving collections fast. Everything is situational and through experience and diligent research you will refine the way you sell and become better at it! Thanks for watching! PART 2: • Buying & Selling Magaz...

    What I've learned from selling general interest magazines 1900 - 1980 (Good Housekeeping, LIFE, Popular Mechanics etc.) is that the parts are often worth more than the sum, especially for artists and advertising collectors. Artists want the pictures for use in collage, journals and jewelry and the advertising people want to frame the ads. Highlighting great art and ads in a specific magazine helped me sell a lot of run-of-the-mill issues I probably wouldn't have moved otherwise. (And yes, it hurts me to think of them taken apart, but it is better than using them for heat or filling up a landfill.)

    • @thebookpeddler
      @thebookpeddler  3 года назад +1

      Absolutely, gotta make something outta nothing at times. When it comes to the older material, I like to preserve plates and maps out of them as well, there's always something to be made it seems even if it may not be apparent immediately, it's whether or not I guess the time is worth investing. Like on one of my last book haul video though, I bought a box of early plates etc. The magazine market since I started paying more attention has been fairly solid for me, I continue to enjoy it! Thanks for watching Shawn!

      I collect vintage magazines. It hurts my SOUL thinking how many people take them apart just to cut up. 😭😭😭 We won’t have any whole vintage mags left! I will never sell my mags, I adore them entirely too much. They’re like a time machine, giving me a look into the time period.

      An old magazine probably has 50 sellable ads in it. Some of them sell for good money. But conservatively, let’s say $5 per ad. You just turned a $10 magazine into a $250 collection of ads.

    Hi Phil ! Great video. Just subscribed. I am in Australia and have been sorting out masses of old magazines. Nothing too ancient, but of course Nat Geogs going back to about 1975. I would like to know please how I can search for any that may be of value. For example things like the Mt St Helen's eruption (1980) etc. I also have some individual items from Time and Life etc, for example John Lennon's assassination, other Beatles stuff, . I imagine that some of these might be worth money. What's the best way to put a value on them please ? Any advice would be greatly appreciated from yourself or any of your subscribers. Thanks. @thebookpeddler  2 года назад +1

      How's it goin Shack, appreciate the support and for subscribing. Check out a website called vialibri.net it pulls listings from sellers of similar items. Go to Ebay and hit the "Advanced" button, off to the right of the search column, enter the information and make sure you have the box "sold" ticked off, that'll give you the listings of what has sold. Compare condition etc. to what you have. There are other ways but for what you have these two sources may be good enough. Good luck, write back if you need to. - Phil

    Hello! I have about 4 years worth of Woman's Home Companion magazines with only a couple random months missing. They are dated from January 1933 - December 1937. Am I going to make more money selling the magazines as a lot and in tact, selling them one by one in tact, or by selling various pages from ads, historical content, fashion from the time, etc.?

    • @thebookpeddler
      @thebookpeddler  3 года назад +1

      Type in the magazine and hit the "advanced search" button on Ebay. Get a grounding as to the rate of sale and how they are selling (bulk/individual) I'm not familiar with that kind of magazine, I will say I've generally had better luck selling in bulk when it comes to magazines. Maybe do a general google search to see if you may have a particular one that's of far greater value than the rest, then you may want to sell that one individually. I'm not all to familiar with selling ads out of magazines, I don't really do it but weigh it out, price to sell and you should be fine 😊. Good luck Debbie! I don’t know why, but I’ve been selling the fire out of playboys for years. They never go for less that $8 a piece, avg at $12. I just sleeve them and make sure absolutely zero of them are in less than vg. Funny thing is, I buy them for what this guy says they’re worth, practically nothing (approx 50 cents a piece if I buy pretty big lots). No harm intended, but I just wanted to let you know that I’m some parts of the country and when presented properly, they can be worth the time.

    • @thebookpeddler

      None offense taken, they just don't hit my price point generally speaking. My main point when I was talking about them was that there seem to be gems in every publication and that's what I rather hone in on. I don't know why collectibles sellers try to sell things in huge lots, especially at or near retail. Is it some leftover relic of the auction scene? Always best to figure out what your sweet spot is for average individual transaction price balanced with shipping costs and your time. On something like magazines, it could be $25-50 a listing.

    • @thebookpeddler
      @thebookpeddler  2 года назад

      Probably because it works for a lot of people, Ebay is a great site to do it on too. I have far more success doing bulk magazine listings than individual ones. I sold all of those farm magazine I believe for over $300 - each situation is different but it has worked wonders for me.

    • @DoctorMindbender
      @DoctorMindbender 2 года назад

      @@thebookpeddler Did you sell the farm mags in one lot for $300 or in smaller bites? Were there any comps on them? My experience is that the more folks spend, the more they expect a discount, especially if the value of the individual items is well understood.

      @@DoctorMindbender @slb I sold them based on the decade, so, 80's, 90's, 2000's. I woulda gave them a bit of a break but they never asked... it's all situational... I've been listing George magazines lately and they're moving fine on an individual basis and judging by the past sales that's the way to go with them. Sometimes if they don't move individually I'll remove the listing put them in a lot and out they go. How I buy is what's most important and generally I get magazines dirt cheap, people just want them gone

    • @DoctorMindbender

      @@thebookpeddler Yeah, there's lots of gems in magazines. Curation is the buzzword that applies so, how you present and bring these things to market makes the biggest impact. Themed lots. Putting things into a context that makes people willing to spend money. My criticism on lots is when sellers act like liquidators. And especially if they don't price like liquidators. Had no idea those George magazines were bringing money. I would assume they had decent circulation based on the media coverage they had.

    • @thebookpeddler
      @thebookpeddler  3 года назад +2

      I'd probably lot them together by year, get a general grounding in what a year goes for, compare the condition and do a fixed price. People will probably ask for an individual one out of the lot, I personally wouldn't bother with breaking it up though. I'd undercut whatever else is out there and just try to move em quick. If you have the time do a search if there's an individual copy or two out of the year that may be worth selling individually but that's up to you on time, space and if you wanna screw with it. That's just personally how I'd approach it. Thanks for watching man, good luck!
