WCW vs. The World, An Underrated Classic - 616SmackDown!

- Everybody talks about WCW/nWo Revenge, everybody talks about WWF No Mercy, but man... WCW vs. The World hit the scene long before either of them. A North American localization of Virtual Pro Wrestling, this was the first 3D representation of World Championship Wrestling in the video game realm. Stars like Sting, Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan, The Steiner Brothers, Diamond Dallas Page, Lex Luger and countless others were joined by generic versions of Japanese, Mexican, and independent wrestlers in a dynamic roster for the ages.

This game is underrated. Once you get the controls down, it is all uphill from there.
Big time, I agree.
It's a really great game. I play it on my retropie and it's still fun 26 years later.
Watching this makes me miss the days of flipping between Monday night Raw and WCW on TV.
100%, dude.
Exactly bro. When 1 would go to commercial switch to the other one. It sucked when both were on commercial. Lol. Those were the glory days
I used to do that too, it was crazy because each brand gave you something fun to watch. A few years ago I was able to grab a ton of WWF and WCW ppvs and shows from raw and nitro so I'm good there lol.
Ian after defeating the world: 'I won but at what cost'
He said it folks 👏👏👏👏👏
These sons of bitch.
The beginning of the Monday Night Wars! We got some great video games out of it!
Heavyweights taught me to hide my snacks in the woods
heavyweights tough me how to love each other 😭
Hahahahahaha, god dammit.
Owned this game in 2000, and couldn't get enough of it! The opening FMV and the orange disc were just icing on the cake.
100%, dude.
Loved this game back in the day! Like you, I was a WCW and PlayStation guy. I put in so many hours on this game. Good work brother! Keep 'em coming!
No doubt, Steven.
I really wish a commentator would just shout out “Are you my asshole?” when someone kicked out of a huge move😂😂
That remark has Tony Schiavone written all over it
Hogan kicking out of the Screwdriver before even 1 is the most realistic shit I’ve ever seen in a video game
HA. You nailed it.
Once you picked Rick Steiner against Sting I knew this video needed commentary 🤣. One day Sting will have his day... love seeing the old WCW classics, as always bro, great stuff.
Thanks for watching, hahaha.
This game was a huge reason why I got back into wrestling in my late teens. A friend of mine didn't like it so he gave to me for free and I ended up addicted to it.
Edit: The Steiner Screwdriver is one of the best moves of all time.
Dude, what a fuckin deal, lol.
This one is a marks-only game, but that's a plus for me cuz i love the all star roster and cool animations for the moves
The roster is amazing when you figure out who all the non WCW guys are.
Fun fact, the Japanese version of this game, virtual pro wrestling, has Vader instead of the turk.
'Marks-only.' Hahahahaha
Rewatching this video while playing wcw vs the world . I feel your pain! Just lost a Sting vs Hogan match but I also cayfabed it and pulled a starrcade 1997 and said I got fast counted lol. So restarting the match to get that proper conclusion haha.
OMG, Ian, I have laughed harder at your commentary here than I have at anything else all day. This is GOLD! "You're gonna hit me in the ding-ding right off the bat?!" I'm DYING over here!
That god damn ding ding shot, come on. We need order!
I really enjoy your content, and your commentary is great as well, been watching for a while about a year or so and I just love Everything you do on here.
Thanks for being here, dude!
the sad part is I bought WCW thunder over this game back in the day if I would have knew this game was this good I would probably got it
Yea, this was definitely the way to go.
After you talked about this in you WCW retrospective, I bought it and still play it to this day. If I ever start my own channel , my first video will definitely cover this overlooked game!!!
Dude, do it!
The one WCW game I have not played, but you do make me excited with your History of WCW series with how much you loved this game! Lately, I'm playing NHL 21 along with Tekken 7 and Crash Bandacoot Nitro Fueled Racing the latter 2 with my son. I'm not watching horror movies yet, but introducing my son to the kid's horror classic series Are You Afraid of the Dark!
Oh man, a true classic. Good choice!
I remember the first time I saw an ad for this in a magazine and the day I got it! This game changed my life.
The days of magazines spreading the word. =)
Dude, one of my favorite moves in WCW vs. the World was the Steiner Screwdriver. I thought you legit killed the guy after winning with that move by KO. Holy hell.
It's so nasty, man.
Thanks for doing this, man. One of the cool things about this game was it exposed me to a bunch of Japanese wrestlers "in disguise." It took me years (pre-internet) to figure out who all of the real world analogs were and as a wrestling fan, that quest for knowledge was rewarding.
Dude I still forget and re-remember who some of them are! lol
@@616Entertainment think about it, we had to do this playing Fire Pro Returns for PS2...well, the 2d sprites made it more obvious
Countless hours played as a kid, even though back then I was mad there were so few WCW guys compared to the rest of the roster. I always knew something was strange/off about the game and hearing now that it was actually a North American localization of a Japanese game makes so much sense. It's funny how I can recognize who so many of the wrestlers are meant to be now. Also how the audience is quiet, like a Japanese crowd, until you do a move. Thanks for the info and the memories, man.
It's crazy when you look back on it and realize so many things, right?
I was a Nintendo kid growing up, so I missed the PlayStation WCW/WWF/WWE games. I'm glad I've gotten to experience these games on here. I definitely want to get the Aki WCW games on the 64, since I haven't played them in forever. WCW vs the World looks pretty darn good, especially for something so early in the PlayStation's lifespan.
It really does. And the colors are so powerful.
These videos are my relaxation after work. Combined with my rig and life is good.
Glad I could help you wind down, my dude.
Love the music during the gameplay! Its so hype
100%, it's amazing.
"Are you my asshole, (...) Can't underestimate the Hulkster huh..." That commentary was golden man
Yo Ian when you said " That Knee was Fucking Amazing" mid explanation was greatness I'm laughing my ass off
DAMN IT. I was just about to go to bed, too. 😂
Same, I’m currently doing schoolwork.
Right in the same boat. I just HAD to refresh the RUclips page... :D
I check RUclips before bed then, I'm awake for another few hours.
No sleeping on my watch, lol.
Bruuuuh you pulled out a classic! I almost forgot this game existed! I never knew it was Virtual Pro Wrestling though. The more you know!
Yes indeed. The learning never stops.
I STILL HAVE THIS GAME
It's worth popping in again, dude.
Wat I love bout this channel I can teach n show my nieces n nephews on classic games I grew up on I’m bouta get ready n order me n my lil Dan dans some 616 gear
I love it! Just make sure you tell them not to use my language, lol.
@@616Entertainment lol oh they won’t 😂
Another great video Ian! I’d like to see you play ECW Anarchy Rulz on 616 SmackDown one day :)
I have already! Go back to the finale of Season 4 of Let's Play Friday!
Oh yeah I remember now! I’d still like to see another gameplay of it though :)
Oh, dude. This game was one of the very first games my family ever got for the Playstation 1. This was a staple of my summer vacation in the Summer of '97 with WWF War Zone. My brothers and I would make tourneys and defend the titles all the time. The only thing this game was missing was tag matches, which World Tour fixed.
Me too! This was indeed the first game I ever got for my PS1. This, Andretti Racing, and Mortal Kombat 4.
@@616Entertainment I think my first few games was WCW vs. the World, Tekken 2 and Road Rash
*"I'M NOT TAKING YOU TO GO-KART CAMP!!"*
*& MY FAVORITE:*
*"Joshhhh was badddddd"*
*"Ohhh geeshh. Ohhh geesh!"*
*"Josh... now GOOD!"*
"..Must be GOOD TO SEE MY BIG ASS AGAIN!"
Good to know that you are also fan of El Guapo. For halloween you should play WCW Nitro/Thunder. That is totally some scary shit😃 keep up makink good stuff Mr Showtime.
Oh man. Why are you trying to get me to play that shit, lol
That soundtrack is fantastic. Great work as always. Also no shit, I watched heavyweights at least twice a week the summer I worked at a daycare. Best cinematic summer of my life lol
Hahahahahaha, it's so fucking good.
Sting fought Steiner on Nitro in 96 or 97. It was the only match he had in between War Games where he turned his back on WCW and when he fought Hogan at Starrcade
Yea, I need to bring the Stinger with that sort of intensity into the next Rick Steiner match.
Great upload I absolutely loved this game back when it come out I didn't know until about 2000 that it was basically virtual pro wrestling never even heard of that game till then living in the UK it wasn't released over here.
Yea, when I was little I had no idea this was basically someone else's game with a new paint job.
This game was my second ever wrestling game after a game on the Amstrad . Forget it's name . The roster is crazy .
Hm, not sure which game you're referencing.
Another great wrestling game video. The devs and everyone at 2K working on their wrestling game need to check out your videos and personally go back and play these wrestling games. I think it should be a requirement, like right on a person's resume' if they work on a wrestling game, somewhere in their qualifications they need to list at least 10 to 15 hours playing games like this, WCW/NWO Revenge, WWF No Mercy, etc from that era. Maybe even a little of the earlier Smackdown games. But more so the wrestling games before the Smackdown series, where is the true to life grappling in wrestling games now?!
Dude I know. Look to the past and cherry pick the great shit if you're making something new!
the video title says it all "An Underrated Classic" 🙏
Big time, no doubt.
Just purchased this game again what a relic! Thanks!
This game doesn’t get enough love ❤️
Agreed 100%.
agreed bro. I love this game.
I appreciate the pancrase talk, even some of the bouts being worked I still enjoy the highlight videos from them. The palm strikes were so brutal and the leg locks are just a lost art today in modern mma. watched ghost ship to waste time and listen godsmack
100%. And yea, not every Pancrase fight was worked, but you can tell that many were.
Damn, sting unmasked.. that's my shit bro, all the old promos and match highlights. Another sick video g
No one can stop the Steiner brothers lmao
I need to track it down! Even just a digital file, I don't care, I just want to relive it!
This is the first game I bought with my PS back in '97, because it was the only wrestling game I saw at Toys R Us. I was totally lost in the controls in my initial playthrough but got used to it eventually. Please don't hate me but I don't miss this game at all because I didn't enjoy it too much. Eventually, I got to play WCW/nWo World Tour on the N64 at my friend's house which I did not have at the time, and I became envious. Every time I left his house to go home I wished that I had that game. Sometimes I would play WCW vs. The World to try and satisfy the craving but it didn't help. Anyway, I gave this game away to my cousin and eventually got a N64 with WCW/nWo Revenge, since that was all the rage after World Tour. Good times! Thanks for the review.
World Tour is essentially the same game just more polished. I had both as a kid. World Tour is definitely the better game.
I don't hate you for that! Hahaha. This game is an underrated classic for sure, but it was outdone shortly after it released. World Tour is basically WCW vs. The World 2, and it improved on Vs. The World big time.
@@616Entertainment Oh, cool. I didn't know that. Learned somethin'.
The 4 seconds of silence in-between talking about the movie Heavyweights had me like..."continue the story?" Lol
Hahahahaha. This History of Heavyweights, 2021. lol
Holy crap, vs. the World's music is amazing!
we're pretty deep into the "fuuuck" lmfao I laughed so hard at this
"Underrated" dude I love this guy so much, long may he reign in all his glory.
Hahahaha, thanks for being here, my dude.
I used to love playing this game. Didn't know about the Pancrase/MMA connection. Cool. This engine and gameplay is so fluid.
Big time Pancrase connection!
My cousin had this game and we went through the entire career mode just scoring count outs, lmao. Watching the gameplay of it now, I really didn't appreciate it quite enough. This game looks soooo good. I need to pick it up.
It's still fun, big time.
Oh, and Ian I love how you're mixing things up with the wrestling games but give the OG XBOX wrestling games some shine too, bro. RAW 2 was pretty solid.
I have NO IDEA where my Xbox is, man. It might've gotten lost when I moved.
You sir are a true warrior for playing this game...
This game is great, dude.
The real question is did any one do the math for that Steiner match? and if so what did the numbers spell?
Also to answer your question, I think the only WCW game I ever played was Nitro but I'm pretty sure I would have loved this game seeing such a mix of characters in one game rather than me having to create each one like i did for every wwf/e game from 2000-2018.
The numbers always spell disaster.
Yea, this game shits on Nitro and Thunder.
And as Sam Strickler said, the numbers always spell disaster, lol.
This was one of the first games I played on the PS1, still remember the commercial and being hyped. I used to play as Akira even though I had no idea who he was, or Eddie Guerrero from team WCW.
I think I might pick up Fire Pro soon and create a bunch of wrestlers and start my own promotion. Last few months, my love for professional wrestling has started to return since the first time in years.
Dude, hell yes on the Fire pro idea.
😂😅😁 Headlock take over is VERY savage, bro!😜😎😊 Rick Steiner was VERY tough at that time to defeat in WCW.
Nothing like a headlock takeover 9 minutes in for a finish, right?
4:03 "Are you my asshole?!" Haha! Great video history as usual dude, but sometimes the stuff you come out with verbally makes me laugh at the worst possible times! Keep the good content coming :)
This game was one if those games that was always elusive to me. I remember seeing it as a kid, my cousin's boyfriend owned it.
I knew NOTHING of WCW growing up, but I was very aware of the Road Warriors and my favorite character to play as was the unfortunately named Overdose.
Yea, for as cheap as it is, it's kinda hard to find, for whatever reason. And yea, the naming choice was unfortunate in hindsight.
Man i love this game and i remember the first time i got to play it in a mall in Washington DC on a school trip and when i got back home i said to my brother we need to get this game it is cool. I still play it from time to time.
It's definitely still worth popping in.
@@616Entertainment definitely is bro
I used to looooooove this game ..... the memories man
The music during that Steiner/Hogan match slaps~
Dude this whole soundtrack is great.
11:12 wasn't that Bass also on a TV show in GTA IV?
Yes
Bas*, but yes. =)
@@616Entertainment oh thanks i thought so.
I never even knew this game existed back in the day. I thought the Aki game started with WCW World Tour on the N64.
Nope!
One consistent I seen in all wrestling games that involve hulk hogan is him doing a drop kick but I dont recall him doing one for real
Hahahaha. Some fans will hit you with "um, watch his matches in Japan." lol
This was the first wrestling game I truly fell in love with it's been so long since I played but I remember absolutely being amazed by it plus sting was on the cover so I instantly had to buy it as a kid
100% agreed.
1) 26:10 That is actually the animation for The Outsiders Edge that Scott Hall used in Virtual Pro Wrestling 64. They had WCW in Virtual Pro Wrestling 64 which came out after WCW Vs. NWO World Tour came out in North America (it was released in North America on November 30th, 1997) on December 19th, 1997 in Japan. The strange thing is that WCW Vs. NWO World Tour was released in Europe on February 12th, 1998. That was 8 months before the North American release of WCW/NWO Revenge on October 26th, 1998, which came out a month later in Europe on November 30th, 1998. The European version of WCW/NWO Revenge was released the same day as the North American version of WCW Vs. NWO World Tour did the previous year? WOW! My mind has been blown open. Anyway, Virtual Pro Wrestling 64 also changed DDP's finisher. They gave DDP a spinning powerbomb because they made DDP's signature Diamond Cutter one of his 4 Strong Grapples. Sting's finisher was changed to his Scorpion Deathlock as the powerbomb was changed to one of his 4 Strong Grapples. Hulk Hogan's finisher was changed from a choke to his Japanese finisher, The Axe Bomber. Unfortunately, Hulk Hogan's running leg drop is still a running strike to a grounded opponent. I just like to point this out.
2) WCW Vs. The World was and still is a very good game. I still play it when I want to go back in time to when in 2006, my friend had this as his only WCW game on the PS1 and we played it on his PS2 every time I went over there. We would trade wins back and forth and it was a blast. I remember having a notebook of how you did everyone's finisher and I would leave it there on the floor at the same time I played because executing a finisher was different from button combination to button combination. The controls were simple outside of finishers and it made me wonder why this series never continued with separate games on PS1 or why didn't WCW Vs. NWO World Tour and WCW/NWO Revenge weren't released on N64 and PS1. Could you imagine if WCW/NWO Revenge was on PS1 alongside an N64 version and they played exactly the same? We could have avoided the dog shit games of WCW Nitro and WCW/NWO Thunder developed by Inland Productions.
An awesome game. Me and my cousin used to play this back in the day lol. Good memories
The best, man.
Love this game, cant remember on the select screen of you press select? I think you can get a different attires.
My brothers and I had some epic battles playing this game.
Dude the back and forth matches could be amazing.
I've been playing Fire Pro Wrestling World (I mentioned I wanted to get into it on the WCW Mayhem video) and I'm loving it. It's a lot of work getting all the wrestlers and ring setups I want but FPW Net is so awesome.
Dude Fire Pro WW is so good.
I remember having this game and loving it but as an adult I reflect on watching this and wonder where the hell Hall, Nash, Nash, Harlem Heat, etc are
So true!!! This game right here was very underrated!!! This was easily the best WCW game on PS1
Definitely.
This was my first wrestling game as a little brat, closely followed by WM2000.
The music is absolutely tops, but I can look back and honestly say the controls haven't aged well.
The music is fantastic, no doubt.
This looks like a combo of Warzone and smackdown. The Screwdriver looks like one the most dangerous moves in wrestling.
Definitely is dangerous. Brian Cage uses it now, but he's extremely careful with it.
@@616Entertainment oh yeah “The Drill Claw!”
Man, the neck bumps in this game as well as the N64 games are brutal. You literally see the dude twitching when he tries to get up from taking too much damage.
It's nasty, hahahaha.
@@616Entertainment you wonder if ur paralyzed him
There is also WCW wrestling for NES, WCW the main event for Gameboy, and WCW superbrawl wrestling for super Nintendo.
I know, I did an entire 'History of WCW Video Games' series. Check it out.
Anyone notice how the match music sounds just like Ryu's stage theme from Street Fighter 2!?
There are similarities to several games, it's a great OST.
I had a lot of good laughs watching this video, and it definitely brought back fond memories of playing this game back as a 14 y/o in 1996. I also remember being disappointed that the later AKI WCW & WWF games were exclusive to the N64, while PSX owners were stuck with turds like WCW Nitro and WCW Thunder. I did get a N64 the following year, so it didn't hurt me much, but I still think that was a missed opportunity by THQ & AKI.
1997*
watched a bunch of your vids the whole day. was waiting for a new vid haha 🔥🔥🔥
I hope it was a good time!
Anytime 616 drops a video, it’s a good time 🤙🔥
Thanks Geoff, glad you're enjoying the videos!
Ugggghhh that menu music just took me back🤤
It's soooooo gooooood.
One of the ps1 games I’ve always wanted to play, but it’s been a bit hard for me to try to find a copy.
For as cheap as it is, it really doesn't pop up too often. Highly recommended, though!
@@616Entertainment True, the game usually cost 10 dollars or less depending on condition.
I have it on my ps classic still fun to knock people out with the count.
Hey, remember when Scott Steiner used to be normal?
It's been a long time since I seen Heavyweights. We took our sister to the local drive-in theater to see Pocahontas, and stayed for Heavyweights. Pretty sure my brother rented X-Men 2: Clone wars for the Genesis too that weekend.
Right now I'm playing New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe for the Switch, and having some fun with Burnout Paradise Remastered on the PS4.
HE'S A GENETIC FREAK, AND HE'S NOT NORMAL.
Also, all Heavyweights memories are good ones.
Have you tried the WCW Feel the Bang No Mercy mod?
Nope. I'm PC illiterate.
I have, it's not perfect but it's very good.
@@616Entertainment Once you figure out how to work it, you'll love it. There's some glitches in there as it's a work in progress but I found it pretty satisfying. Has WCW characters past and present
This is one of my all time wrestling games along with vs NWO WT on 64
Good call, good call.
Wtf? I never saw this episode on the retrospective.
Oh well, I'm gonna take myself back to the past after this video
Then you didn't watch the whole thing!
Straight from several zero-counts
in a row to a successful 3. Weird
Shaolin Monks is on hold while I am working more than usual
Gotta love the complete lack of building momentum, lol.
I would guess that the reason the Pancrase fights are included on the guys' records is they never actually came clean about which matches were worked and which weren't. Pancrase and PRIDE, the last bastions of kayfabe
Yea, that's what I said! hahaha
Ben stiller is fucking great in heavyweights, truly a classic
I had this game back in the day. My brother and I played this game for hours. Until we got smackdown 2
SD! 2 is so good.
For those who are curious, here's Bas vs Ken in Pancrase in the 90s: ruclips.net/video/7jFtcJzvWCs/видео.html
Luckily stuff like Pancrase is so old, by and large, that it's pretty easy to find the matches in full on RUclips.
I hate to be a total noob man, but did you have a separate wrestling review channel called Triangle, X, Square or something? If so, be great if you could link me! Thanks, dude!
No, Triangle X Squared O is the name of my retrospective series on wrestling games. Check the channel, they're all there separately and as one compiled video.
More of a revenge fan but I have tremendous respect for what wcw vs the world started
Big time, big time.
It's 2 in the morning, my girlfriend says she loves me and a 616Entertainment video just dropped. T-SAURIO BEBE is happy
That's what I call a good night.
If I remember right they had a wcw game on the original game boy. Never played it, played the WWE superstars games back then and the WWE games on game gear, but I played plenty of this on the original PlayStation when it was released in 1996. I never had an N64. The N64 wrestling games looked great, but I’ve been a Sony gamer since 1995 so the N64 never really appealed to me, but I had basically a mini-arcade before that between NES, SNES, and Sega back then. Since everything is going digital now, I wish there was a way to play all those consoles through an app that could be played on the current consoles. Good stuff.
They did have a GameBoy game, I just don't bother with it. Shitty handheld ports usually get ignored by me, lol.
@@616Entertainment Eh, they might be by today’s standard, but back then they were groundbreaking. I remember playing these battery operated games were it was just one game with w built in control pad growing up that actually predated handheld consoles. That’s how far back I go. The technology now is hands down better though, we agree there.
I had a lot of fun with this game when I was in high school.
It's still fun, too!
My first playstation game right here. Whenever I play this on epsxe I feel like my kid self again. Just no big tube tv and parents telling me to get ready for school.
Is that an emulator or something?
@@616Entertainment yeah, I unfortunately don't have a functional playstation anymore.
Dont even trip bro, Heavyweights is a dope ass movie.
I played this after I played WCW vs nwo world tour and after WCW NWO revenge.
For the original PS1, WcW vs the world along with WCW Mayhem are the two best WCW games for PS1.
I still enjoy WCW nitro for the rants and the absurd characters in that game.
No doubt about it, man.
