Awhile back, I finished Ash vs Evil Dead. It is the most bat shit, insane, hilarious series I’ve ever watched. I cannot recommend it enough if you are a fan of the films.
I was so disappointed that we weren’t getting a second 4
I'm still waiting for Ash in a apocalyptic future battling deadites though, both the OG ending of AoD and the series teased that.
@@davidmayberry3190 you never know of the game does well then we could get season 4
It's the same quality as the movies and anyone who even remotely likes the original 3 will definitely like the series as well
Just saw ED1 - AVED this year... I'm obsessed
It's crazy that sam raimi was only 20 year's old when he did evil dead him and bruce campbell raised the money for the budget and all they're hard work paid off the original is the best ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
@KTV 4U And is now a cult classic.
It IS a perfect example of "doing something for the sheer love of it". =)
@@BuckarooBanzai84 And they're getting the kudos they deserve.
What's even crazier is learning to spell.
@@swordofdanu What ever
The first evil dead is one of my favorite horror films ever.
Recently saw the evil dead movies to the remake and I have to agree.
@@Grim_Concept you just can't beat or replicate the original.
Right up there, with, The Thing.
2 of my tops right there.
@@Dagrizzb yeah the thing is an absolute classic.
The ending is one of the most intense endings for a horror movie and I just love the creativity and it also launched Bruce Campbell on the world, always a win
Getting banned here in the U.K was probably the best thing to happen to this movie. It turnt a normal film, into a cinematic rite of passage for us.
Something whispered about in the playground when I was boy. Something that had to be gotten from a friend of a friend, who made a copy of a copy. So violent, that it was illegal to own. Then in college, my cinephile friends & I bought multiple foreign copies. Because they were all different cuts. Showing LITTLE more each time.
I think it actually made the experience better. It wasn’t a film - It was an artefact
This was the same as the exorcist. I had to watch a copy of a copy when it was still illegal to own it here. The notoriety helped create a mystique around it that was far scarier than the actual movie
Still though, I hate how stuffy you guys's film censors can be.
Yep it was down to the hysteria of the video nasties that both sides of the government agreed that certain violent films needed to be certified and censored in which the changes did not came in till 84 after it was passed and those who were not lucky got banned and after various of cases that evil dead got removed from the 75 dpp list of video nasties even raimi appeared in court across the uk including London and Leeds and he was victorious and the rest is history
My first VHS copy of this movie still had the NC-17 rating so it held a similar status for me and my friends.
centrevez gaming I saw the evil dead in Leeds where it was one of the few places it was shown. To stop people going, they put it on at the local sex cinema which confused their normal clientele. To think some people thought it was a snuff movie at the time as well!
As a kid, the iconic Evil Dead cover art of the VHS loomed ominously on the shelf of the horror section. It was a time where we judged the quality of the movie by the quality of the box art. This was among those that emanated true horror.
Well said! Can’t agree more!
Ha ha yeah
lol it scared me off, the skull with the eyes looking out the eye sockets creeped me out. i didndt watch that movie till i was already an adult, and i was a horror fan growing up but for some reason that vhs cover got to me.
i was younger, first good horror i saw was evil dead 2, and yep, due to it's awesome box art. pre internet in the video rental days we very much were influenced by the box art and/or word of mouth. but i was like 7 when i saw ED 2 and was an eldest child with parents that weren't fans of this stuff (albeit DID let me watch it, contrary to the majority of my friends' parents) so i pretty much had NOTHING to go off except the box art and description on the back.
@@ArtofLunatik the box with the very alive eyes in the skull was for evil dead 2, not 1.
So Bruce Campbell was cut, lost teeth and cracked his ribs. Man he was hell bent on finishing this movie.
Yep also hurt his ankle and went without food numerous times along with the rest of the cast.
Damn, to say he suffered for his art would be an understatement!
Some might say he was possesed?
I thought it was the camera man that lost some teeth?
Holy cow. I'm surprised they glossed over this in the video, but at 2:30 they mentioned that he (a nobody filmmaker) raised $375,000 in 1978, which is the equivalent of $1.6 million today, in the midst of a horrible economy and stagflation is an amazing feat!
Remember, this is a white man's world. Of course, he was able to raise that money.
@@ramseyabdul1873 I'm happy I don't know you.
@@polopopoo glad I don't know you, either. I live in reality, you, clearly, wanna live in a fantasy world
@@ramseyabdul1873 So by your logic any white man is able to raise 1.6m for a movie? Not only are you delusional you are racist!
@@Adam_Outdoors it's easier and 100 times more possible for someone white, in America to achieve that than it is for anyone else, who's struggling. Be real for once in your life
This was the first horror movie to give me nightmares at 12 years old. Love it!
I watched it first time about the same age and I didn't know that this was supposed to be a horror comedy so me and my sister were surprised that this wasn't scary at all and at the time we didn't want to watch anything "old school" which is stupid from us, especially from me who loves 1970/1990 horror movies and practical effects nowadays. Great series anyway!
Fuck ya it did!
@@JoakimOtamaa The first one wasn't intended to be a horror comedy. Raimi was surprised when audiences started laughing at the Ash scenes where he's getting attacked etc. ED2 and AoD were intended horror comedies.
I remember I was ~8 my cousin maybe 7 , I loved it while my cousin was scared shitless from that scene at the end with the trees :D he ran into another room, i ran to him and said
: -common you dont want to miss it, huge fucking scary trees gonna eat them up
*He screamed with his hands on his ears while repeating "No No NOOoo" with a snot coming from his nose
I was like 17 when I saw it and it scared the shit out of me
I watched this movie for the first time the other week after years of trying to watch it. I loved the tape recorder scene the most building tension and the non stop roller-coaster that followed.
Love that "Stehpen King" quote
Easily, one of the greatest horror films ever made
Ah, one of my favorite franchises ever.
Army of Darkness is awesome!
this explains EVERYTHING!!! the pain, discomfort, injurys etc definatly contributed to the dirty, grimy, lonely feel to the film.still one of the best ever!!!!!
When the "making of" is almost more insane than the actual movie
I love this movie, it’s so wholesome in that it’s just a crew of people who had this passion and managed to make such a classic horror film.
What a pleasurable, informative and entertaining stroll down horror memory lane!
The Evil Dead is a classic.🔥
When the first time I seen this movie, I was paralized with fear. I will never forget it and that day.
I was working as an AD in Detroit and I remember meeting Sam through a mutual business friend at his offices in Royal Oak. I hadn't see his stuff but my friend was so impressed with Sams work. He looked about 14 but had an intensity and maturity about him that was impressive. So happy that crew went for it and got it done. I'm sure he's been an inspiration for aspiring Michigan filmakers ever since. I have close friends that have worked with him over the years and I've never heard a bad word about him. Good stuff!
This movie was instantly captivating. What a story behind the story. Great persistence!
This movie is gorgeously shot. Beautiful lighting and cinematography, great saturation, creative direction and sound design. Actors who gave their all. A masterpiece.
Thank you

Thank you.
Bless Bruce Campbell and the other actors for sacrificing their selves to help create a classic.
This was the 2nd “modern” horror film I ever saw, the first being Halloween. I was 13 at the time. I found it very disturbing and did not recognize the comedy elements. I had no idea the guy who made it was only 20. That’s freaking amazing.
Great video for a fantastic franchise. Highly recommend "If Chins Could Kill" its a great behind the scenes look and flows like its Bruce just talking with you.
I hope so! I've heard he's a really nice guy too. =)
I need to read it again. GREAT book!!
awesome book
This has got to be one of the best examples of film-making passion. Ever. The original had me terrorized the first time I watched it (I was probably 14) but to this day, Sam Raimi movies have always left me satisfied.
Going to see this in a few weeks at a one off showing in a local theater. My kid and I are seriously looking forward to it.
Bruce and Sam...on of the great tag teams!!! Read "If chins could kill" and laugh the whole way through.
Great insight into the making, a good read.
I was 11 when I accidentally found a VHS tape and watched it while at a camp on the river. I was so frightened I did not sleep for days.....
40 years later and this low-budget horror film is still a legendary one that made a huge impact on Raimi, Campbell & Tapert.
I don't know if it's available for it yet but if not, The Evil Dead (1981) needs a 4k UHD Blu-Ray release for it's 40th Anniversary now.
It's already avaible. But still the 2K Sony transfer is quite great. Saw that scan in cinema (same as on bluray) and it was awesome.
I have this on 4K UHD. It was released in 2018 and it might be out of print as a stand alone. But it is still available in numerous multi-movie sets.
Good video!! I remember renting this movie on VHS in 1983 or so, did not really think anything about this thing. Got home; put the VHS into tape player; turned out the lights' and just watched. Lets just say that I di NOT sleep with the lights off for about 3 months afterwards - one of the few horror movies to "scare" me like that (The Exorcist and The Omen were a few others to mention).
Watched this in VHS tape around 1983 in India. The film was not banned here unlike some countries . I was little to understand the story but the horror scenes were really scary. Still love the movie after so many years.
I remember watching this as a teenager and I was truly terrified. Most horror movies never did that to me. It is amazing how limitations bring out creativity. If you were given 300 million and told to make the best movie you could, it would not be as good as you being given 2 million and told to make the best movie for that amount. You would focus more on the story, and interesting shots to convey it, and creative solutions to problems.
I wasn't exactly young when I saw this but the only part I found quite scary was where the girl is guessing the cards and suddenly shes getting them all correct
I wish people would stop apologizing for stuff they did decades ago,it's so dumb.
Finding out about all the obstacles they had to overcome to shoot this incredible film makes it even better. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has a lot of nostalgia attached to the evil dead, I was born in 84 and always remember seeing the vhs on the shelf in the local video rental shop, the same design as was shown in this video, always looking scarey. My first watch was at a sleepover when I was about 10, all of us pretending we weren't scared but were actually shitting ourselves
Spiderman 3- 1000x the budget of The Evil Dead.
The Evil Dead- 1000x better than Spiderman 3.
It became a thing of legend and would not only spawn 2 amazing sequels, but also gave the world Ash Williams - Housewares. Hail to the King, baby!
Shop smart. Shop S-Mart!
What an amazing video! Love this movie so much
I'm even more impressed that Sam was 20 freaking yrs old! So ashamed i wasted my youth.
I remember my schoolmates talking about this movie. I finally saw it and loved its simple, Lovecraft-inspired plot, not to mention the inventively gruesome effects. A true cult classic!
That's why evil dead was one of the best horror movies of all time

It is crazy that in a woods filled with trees they resorted to burning the furniture.
Not as crazy as you may think. Trying to ignite real wood is a pain, and can take hours. It's honestly just easier to burn a few sticks furniture. Especially in the days before flame retardant chemicals were used.
But will we ever get to see Ash battling deadites in a post apocalyptic future?
I had no idea what I was about to watch when this film first hit theaters. I saw it as a double feature with Chained Heat, and was blown away with everything The Evil Dead had to offer, especially its camera work.
The original Evil Dead ( and the three films, the tv series) is one my all time favorite horror franchises. They weren't kidding when they had the grueling terror line. I do wonder if anyone found Sam Raimi's time capsule that was buried where the cabin once stood, hopefully nobody ended up with buckshot up their tail looking for it.
Randomly came in my recommended today, very pleased, super subscribed
Awesome, thank you!
@@JoBloHorrorOriginals of course
of course
you can only really understand how big this film was if you lived at a time when watching a film in your own home was a novelty. watching the netflix version now on phone is mind blowing.
Many legendary films were made from low budget. This film is one of them.
That scene with the demonic branch is awesome and adds to the evilness of the movie. I for one am glad they kept it in.
I was never a big time horror fan but this became one the best I've seen as a teen in the UK.My friends dad managed to get a copy from his job working off shore and as it was banned over here it gave it that must see extra edge and one of my all time horror favourites .
One big reason this movie gained such a huge cult following was that in the early 80s VHS/Beta movies were only released 3 times a year, just a few titles at a time, they were very limited in what movies you can choose from particularly the horror genre, Evil Dead and Dawn of the Dead were among the first to make it into people's homes and were often stolen making finding a copy a kind of quest and when you did find one you threw a movie party. Video movie parties were huge when VCRs and BetaMax first came out, VCRs were expensive and a novelty, not everyone had one.
Watching the Evil Dead (1981) aged 12 or 13, when released on VHS in UK. Now this movie was an introduction to horror. This was also before Mary Whitehouse, condemned horror films, then this masterpiece was banned and removed from all vhs shop shelves (along with other titles at the time)
Today I learned Sam Raimi is from my home town of Royal Oak. Glad I found your channel. So educational!!!
This was the first VHS I ever rented (well my parents paid for it), we had just brought a large VCR (top loading) and along with the movie Stripes, we sat down as a family to watch a double bill, one comedy, one horror. I was 13 at the time, and this movie blew me away, it was the goriest thing I had ever watched. About a year later, the movie got banned as a Video Nasty in the UK.
I'm just glad this movie happened, because without it, we wouldn't have had 'Brisco County Jr.' =D (LOL)
What do you mean “What happened to this movie”?! It was a big hit, you can see it anytime in a number of channels, and sequels as well as a remake were made.
Put the pipe down Billy boy.
Thank you for correctly referring to them as "college students" and not "kids" or "teenagers." Also, death to censorship!
Amen, death to censorship! I feel really bad for the censors in Europe and the UK. They have it really bad. It's extremely uptight and stuffy for them.
@@codyt821 We are the Resistance!
I saw this for the first time a few years after it came out at this theater in my home time that would play double features of older movies during the summer on Fridays. We saw The Evil Dead and Alien for $1. The place was always full of high school kids like me at the time. It had a balcony so you could throw popcorn at the people below you. I remember some couple brought a kid who was probably around 4 years old. They made until shortly after the chest burster scene in Alien. He didn't make it to the Evil Dead.
I had nightmares because of this movie then went to watch it all over again when I was a kid, is a classic on the same level as the Exorcist and Poltergeist
A forever legendary film
IDK why scenes like the tree scene are so controversial... Murder is way worse but we don't apologize for depicting that.
Fantastic video. Going to watch it again right now.
I love this franchise Ash is my hero
I've introduced this movie to at least a dozen people in the last month alone, it's such an amazing classic.
Evil Dead 2... I love it.
One of the greatest ever films, let alone horror films.
One of the best horrors ever made. Fucking genius. Fucked me up for years growing up after watching this.
in my bleeding eyes, this is not only my fave horror movie, but easily my favorite movie ever. it just has the most unsettling feeling that will never be recreated again....and seeing all these facts about it tells me why.....lol. this is so awesome
An amazing video showcasing a few of the reasons why (imo) Evil Dead is one of the best if not THE best horror movies ever made, def gonna sub
My dad told me that he used to be into horror movies before I was born and he told me that this was one of his favorite movies back in the day. He got back into watching Evil Dead trilogy after getting into "Ash vs The Evil Dead" on Netflix a couple of years ago.
Still flips me out that I'm only about 30 minutes from where they shot this classic. Too bad the cabin is no longer there and its private property or it would be a great place to party for Halloween. :(
This is my favorite horror movie of all time
And my favourite film of all time too
Got to see this in theaters about 20 years ago, may get to see it again next month.
Everyone should own it.
I saw it (4X) when it was originally released, the first time i had no idea what it was about and went with 7 fellow high school friends, all of us tripping on acid on a Friday night. It was intense as hell but one of our party was a big jokester and basically riffed it before there was such a thing. He talked continuously, making jokes and funny comments and had us howling. There was an older black couple right in front of us we were afraid were going to get mad but they were cracking up too, listening to Bob! The one line I never forgot was when Ash pulled a particularly cowardly move and Bob blurted out, " That's it! I'm changing sides, I'm routing for the blue guys!" and half the theater broke into laughter! ( After the movie we sat for 3 hours at an all night McDonalds listening to Bob ramle on hilariously while watching him peel all of the batter off of his McNuggets, discarding the batter and just eating the meat. Ah, memories, what a great night! Lol!
wow never knew a person who would peel the batter off of their McNuggets.
@@darmemos15I daresay I'd eat the breading before I ate the 'chicken' inside. He ate the 'meat'. 🤢
That's the point right? To enjoy it with others. It's a social experience.
With that said, I first watched this while taking a boat load of weed and that alone made it seem more real and intense. Can't believe you guys saw it acid and didn't freak out.
@@AltairEgo1 we were to a point, but Bob's girlfriend and I were sitting next to each other - she'd seen it already and kept warning me whenever the jumpscares were about to happen, which sorta ruined the fright a bit, for me anyway. 😖
First time I ever saw this I had a two mile walk home down pitch black Country lanes.
I guess all the suffering the actors and crew experienced in the evil dead movie was worth it because the evil dead still remains one of the best classic horror of all times.
It’s the professionalism, performances and perseverance of cast and crew like this, that actually gets my respect in the corrupt and perverted world of hollyweird.
there's something magical about movies being watched in 80's and 90's. we dont have HD stuffs and gigantic screen. only 19" box with resolution lower than smartwatch but we had so much fun. making a run to movie store to rent vhs tape or cd because tomorrow is weekend.. that's when 2 seater couch could fit 5 person, and it was one of the sweetest memory
The Evil Dead -- 1981 was my all-time favorite horror movie!!
Wow. Thanks for telling this. Now I admire the crew more than I did when completely shocked by this film many years ago.

Evil Dead was the first horror movie that I ever saw. I was 14. Thirty five years later and I'm still hooked on horror.
Same as Me its Historic 😎
Really great documentary. And great use of clips. Two small corrections - the final shot was NOT a motorcycle through the camera. That was Sam himself running like crazy through the woods and through the cabin. All of us Fake Shemps were on doors for the effect. I believe we did three or four takes and one time Sam did fall into Bruce knocking him over - but I didn't recall anything being broken. Second correction - Sam did NOT burn the cabin down. I visited it a few times the following two years and it was still there. No one know the real reason for the cabin fire - lighting or kids partying inside. Compliments again on a great doc.
I remember renting this on Beta tape.
Computer graphics ruined horror movies. They were so fascinating back then.
this film used to scare the shit out of me when i was 8 years old, it was only when i got older i realised it was a comedy. about the "video nasty" thing, there were lots of films with that label in GB at the time due to the head of the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) being a hardcore christian, basically, anything he didnt like, got banned! he is the reason why so many other films from the 70's and 80's got banned too
It was the last film I saw at a drive-in
The Evil Dead Is The Best Horror Movie Of All Time ❤
And best movie ever made too
You missed the part where Sam was whacked by a tree branch that probably gave him a concussion.
I have been to the original Evil Dead filming location in Morristown Tennessee. I live right down the road from it for many many years. It's been burned down now from kids partying in it. But I loved that local landmark make me very proud to live in Morristown Tennessee the only thing that ever made me proud to live in Morristown Tennessee. Morristown is a meth infested horrible place to live I barely survived it I don't recommend anyone living there
