They certainly are using the same drastically rewritten version of Merry Widow as New York City Opera used in their fabulous 1996 production. Eg the fictional country is called not Pontevedro. but 'Marsovia'. More importantly the third act is greatly expanded; and here it is Hanna who dances with the Grisettes; in the original it is Valencienne.
This performance is, I am a afraid, very inferior to that of New York. And that applies to ALL characters, although especially to Hanna Glavari.

Once you've watched the 1996 production you can't really watch another. It was brilliant from the writing to the cast. Everyone was pitch perfect! But I appreciate that this version follows in its footsteps.

It was a nice enough performance, but I didn't feel the lead actors were quite right for their roles. They didn't express their character as well as they could. Rather than feeling the essence of the love , they simply projected voice. Also it appears as if this was copied from the New York Opera 1996 performance, even some of the costumes appeared to be the same. They did well, but not well enough.

I generally love this opera and this production is pretty good. In the last scene in Maxime's why did the dancing girls have to have such grating, obnoxious accents?

@avk004, You are correct, The Merry Widow is not grand opera, it is an operetta.

This is, (and I could not have thought it possible before) worse than the New York City Opera 1996 production. The hamfisted editing, with all the favorite melodies presented within the first three minutes, then four-and-a-half minutes of unnecessary and inane exposition before the overture begins all combine with an uneven mix of levels of talent to give a disappointing result. This is, as Madgeson remarked eleven months ago, DREADFUL!

Disagree. Kallen Esperian was money and the show was enjoyable. Video product was poor, I will give you that.

Just watched it again. See Hebrews, Chapter 13, verse 8 (King James Version, not the NKJV). And yes, this is a reference to a famous Robert Benchley review.
