    On the lotus because the front cover isnt doweled i think you need to fit the front oil seal and front pulley before tightening the cover bolts to make sure the oil seal is centered on the pulley so it doesn't weep oil

    • @gazza116
      @gazza116 5 дней назад +2

      yes the timing cover must be centralised,other wise the seal will not be central.

    • @madeljacky
      @madeljacky 4 дня назад

      Correct, that's the way I do all timing covers that are not doweled and never had a crank seal leak on any of them because the seal in the cover is centralised when you install the crank pulley on the crank and then tighten the bolts.

    That lotus engine takes me back to when I first started driving in 77, I was working as an apprentice in a local Austin Rover Jaguar agents, we had several customers with Lotus cars and Mk 1 and 2 Lotus Cortina's, loved them engines back in the day.

    The only BMW engine I have eyes for is the 750's V12, made from two siamised 525e engines making repair quite reasonable and with the Alpina engine mods and ECU's is a 200mph motor and gets there bloody quick. Because its got the 525e footprint it can go into anything that can take the six cylinder engines, very potent engine :D

    For a really clean look for the BDA, counterbore the cam cover bolt holes and use socket head cap screws. 👍

  • @grp4

    Nice job on the BDA cam cover. That's a fuel injection cover, BTW. The pump bolts across the top of the cover and is driven by a small toothed belt off one of the cams.

    10:04 A film of contact cement on the underside of that cork gasket and it's mating surface on the block/front cover will anchor that gasket securely for when you're installing the cylinder head.

    That BD(A?) engine cover. No dowels, but the (missing) crank oil seal onto the (missing) front pulley is as much a lining up point as the top seal to the cylinder head. I once cocked this up myself and had oil pissing out everywhere. Much embarrassment!

    If the 2 litre VW Caddy engine is a TDi it's possibly a variant of the EA288 family of engines. According to the EA288 engine training manual I found on the Internet, it states that for the combined oil and vacuum pump, "The maintenance free toothed belt runs directly in the oil". My Seat Leon FR TDI 184 has that engine and has done nearly 77000 miles. Perhaps as a bit of preventative maintenance I should get that belt replaced by the time the car reaches 100k miles, based on the Ford wet belt issues (my ex had a B Max up until a couple of months ago but ditched it for a Skoda Scala before the wet belt went on the EcoBoost).

    Light rub of grease on the cork gasket helps hold in place on assembly and also seals against oil leaks under compression.

    What used to be the (push rod) cam is called a Jack-shaft. In Twin Cam application, does it drive the distributor?

    • @grunewaj
      @grunewaj 5 дней назад +2

      Yes, it only drives the distributor, oil and fuel pumps. It doesn’t really need to be timed with the crank. You only have to “clock” the distributor so that the plug wires are pointed in a good direction so they can be routed nicely to the plugs. Since the distributor is driven with a gear, you’ll have the opportunity to clock the distributor after the motor is finished. The BDA is the same.

    A strange Lotus Engine block without the L letter casted in the engine mount, and it's a 2731 pre-crossflow engine block, could be a mk2 cortina (block can not be bored out to 85mm cyl to thin)

  • @tymcclengineering8672

    The Twincam head will not slide down the pilot rods you have made because of the timing chain guide which protrudes out and you have to accommodate that. I am surprised you didn't learn that from the previous Twincam you did, but that was another employee.

    This may be a stupid question since I am an avid watcher and try to catch every upload within a few hours of it being posted. But I don't remember hearing anything about that high power Subaru STI engine that came in probably around August or September of last year. So if there's any news about it maybe put it in and upload or if it's been done and gone and quietly, go ahead and flame me in the comments. Thank you so very much, Scott engine builder and professional drag racer from the other side of the Atlantic

    • @frasermitchell9183
      @frasermitchell9183 5 дней назад +1

      Jaguar Land Rover vehicles. My XE has one. Achilles Heal is the timing chain assembly that is prone to wearing out prematurely. OK, so what, do I hear you say ? Well, on most engines the timing gear is easily accessible at the front of the engine, but on the Ingenium it's at the rear, (there is a BMW engine that is similar). So it is a far bigger job to repair than normal due to the additional labour charges, but not a complicated job

    Lee, the new intro is great but I had to stop watching less than one minute into the video. When you want to show different engines please stop swinging the camera around like a tennis racket. Cut to the item instead. The videos have become literally unwatchable as these wild swings induce nausea. Just watch for yourself and I hope you’ll see what I mean - I cannot be alone on feeling this way. The content is interesting but unwatchable for me I’m afraid.
