Fun fact - Spain is kind of empty. It has very populated areas around coast but there are huge spots of nothing in the middle. So it is actually a little bit like Paldea. Although vast areas of nothing do not make a great game.

My main complaint abt gen 9 is kinda my complaint of the series as of recent. It is the largest media franchise in the world and we still have buggy npc animation, glitches, bad frame rates, and hollow environments. We have games like BOTW and TOTK on the switch which don’t have the issues above at the same level S/V had. I just think Nintendo knows they can put less effort into the game and be confident it will still sell amazing. Back in gen 5 there was so much content to do in the games that weren’t a part of a DLC, they had a good story, and great graphics. Any ways all of this to say. I think S/V are sloppy games with a good story. And their isn’t an excuse for them for having as many problems as they have besides corporate greed.

The problem with Pokemon games is not just about needing more time for development. They can get 2-3 more years but it wouldn't matter if they don't hire developers who can handle making and managing 3D games. The current team clearly doesn't know how to handle making games on new consoles. They really need a bigger team of developers and animators who can teach the current team and also guide them.

God, Penny's story sucks so much. She genuinely spoils so much of the endgame for me with how much the game starts to suck her off. Like, she legit could've just reintroduced herself and told everyone else to, ya know, stop being rebellious students, instead of the entire starfall street. Then it turns out she had so much BP and TMs from hacking the Pokemon League and instead of being punished for doing that she gets hired by them and is celebrated, team star not only accepts her, but after all the bullshit she does and how there are 0 consequences for her, she talks shit at Arven throughout the entire endgame. Like she is actually an asshole and it becomes totally understandable why she would be bullied. She's stuck up, acts like she's better than people, gets treated like she's better than people, and gets rewarded every time she does something wrong or mean. She is legit the reason I haven't completed my violet playthrough after finishing scarlet. I get to starfall street and I'm just like "nah, I don't want to have to deal with the self-insert Mary sue again"

And, seriously, for all that, Arven gets like 1 line from the Robo-parent apologizing for neglecting him and saying that he/she loves him. Paldea felt like some sort of safari zone for the students, even when venturing to some of the more interesting locations, there was always a Pokècentre and other trainers. You can cross the desert in the blink of an eye thanks to Miraidon, forget stocking up on items for a long trek into the centre of an area like that to find a rare Pokèmon or a hidden secret.
Even the Treasures of Ruin just appear, theres no cave to unlock or venture into.

As a competitive Pokémon player I can confirm the stellar tera type sees almost no use there either lol.
The ONLY use I’ve seen it on is Serperior and Enamorus because of their ability Contrary. When you use Tera Blast while Terastalized into the stellar type, you always do super effective damage to Terastalized targets with the trade off of lowering both your offenses by 1 stage. But with Contrary, your offenses are raised instead, allowing you snowball out of control pretty quickly.
However neither of these Pokémon are SUPER good in doubles, so that strategy is hardly ever seen.
TLDR: No one uses stellar tera type in VGC lol

  • @Frysbear

I pretty much agree on the open world. It didn't need to be as big as it was in all places. A big thing that is being lost with this new obsession to be able to "go anywhere and climb everything" is that you miss out on having actual areas in games. Or at least it's hard to make more cozy areas like pokemon has always had in the past. I don't necessarily think open world is the problem alone, but scale and traversal are.
The best examples I can think of are a few of my favorite areas in SV. The cave going up to Alfornada. It's such a cool set piece and take you up these awesome paths on cliffs overlooking the ocean. But it can totally be skipped by just climbing straight up the other side of the mountain. The Tag tree thicket is another neat location, but it was this problem where you never feel like you're in a Dense wood like in the old games. Cause you can see the sky at all times, and can just... climb out. It makes it feel less isolated and more like an asset plopped on a map.
What I really want is an open world Pokemon game, with somewhat limited traversal options. And then for Gamefreak to build a tighter map with layouts and set pieces tht feel designed for how you will be able to interact with them. and then let the game open up when it needs to. Like in a desert, or a giant lake. Los platos felt great at the beginning of the game, cause it was the first large area you got to. But then most of the game continued to be more versions of los platos in terms of layout... again... and again.
Those are my thoughts. Still honestly love the game. and some areas are cool But they need some smaller places. When it comes to progression, I'd rather have a tangle of linear paths that overlap like a maze, rather than a blank piece of paper.

Well you couldn't have timed this one better, Craig, my little brother and I finally got around to beating the Epilogue literally yesterday. Apologies in advance for the long comment.
I really agree that the school was a missed opportunity. Like let's have lunch dates in the cafeteria with Nemona or Arven, let's talk to Jacq about the Titan phenomenon, let us go to sleep in our dorm and change the time of day like PLA. They had the perfect opportunity to give players some real lessons in competitive strategies, Hidden Abilities, and how to use tricky items like the Iron Ball, and they never took advantage of it.
I actually liked Nemona a lot! Arven has my entire heart, but Nemona's pure joy and enthusiasm, while a little grating at times, was adorable, and really helped the Penny-Nemona-Arven-Player squad feel like genuine friends by the end, especially post-AI Professor. Penny is I think the weakest, because she barely shows up as herself, but the Epilogue really did a lot to humanise her imo. As for my favourite Gym Leader, I'm going to say Ryme as unpopular a choice as she is. It's so refreshing to have a cool older Black woman in the peak of her music career, who is unapologetically herself, in a Pokémon game. Tho Larry, Iono, Grusha, and Brassius are also really fun.
100% agree that the final battles against the AI Professor was the perfect ending, and is right up there with Gen 5 for my favourite ending in the series. I think it really pushes Arven’s plotline as the best in the game, it’s by far the most emotional and has I would say the strongest conclusion.
The open world in ScVi was too much too quickly imo. Gen 8 and PLA weren't enough of a learning curve for Gamefreak, they needed more time to make something like this work. ScVi should have been somewhere between Gen 8 and what we actually got. and, yknow, they just need more time in general, these games are coming out too quickly for the ambition being put into them, they're bound to fail. You’re absolutely right, they CAN’T do this again, people won’t let them get away with it after both SwSh and ScVi disappointed so many people. I truly think these games would have been infinitely better *and* better received had they not been open world at all; I preferred the painfully straight routes of SwSh than the sprawling glitchy emptiness of ScVi.
I'll say my favourite Pokémon from Paldea would be Dachsbun, the Nacli line, Bloodmoon, and Archaludon, which has quickly become one of my favourite Pokémon of all time. Overall I was really happy with the new additions. But yeah, Tera Raids are god awful and will never be remembered fondly.
Overall, I recognise the glaring issues that ScVi had, but these games are very special to me for a multitude of reasons. The story is easily up there with Gen 5 for me, and the main cast is perhaps my favourite in the series. I just wish it wasn’t dragged down so heavily by it’s performance.
Really great review/retrospective Craig, loved the humour sprinkled throughout and enjoyed hearing your in-depth thoughts on the game!

@@thikof I gotta disagree with you on most fronts here. I don't believe this is a good game in any way to measure it. It's kinda fun but like that's just pokemon the game is fun because battling pokemon is fun not because of anything this game did special. I enjoy pokemon battling I don't enjoy playing the rest of scarlet and violet. As for story it's had all the elements to make a good story but they failed on the presentation of that story. Sorry that I don't like looking at stiff models repeating decade old animations as I have to read/mash through novels worth of text boxes just to have the whole story be spoiled in the first few parts because game freak lays on the foreshadowing sauce pretty hard. I hope game freak takes all the valid criticism made towards the game and make a better game. S/V could have revolutionized pokemon if they actually cared but they didn't and it shows and it has destroyed my trust in the series. From my understanding, the Stellar type acts as a purely offensive type and the user keeps its original typing defensively while recieving a boost on all moves. It's for sure very gimmicky at times and you would rather run an offensive tera type or a defensive tera type (like tera water, steel or grass)
Not many Pokemon want to use the Stellar type from what I have seen in Competitive, Mostly Glasscannons like Chien Pao or Urshifu for the extra damage. However, Tera Blast gets a special interaction with the type and makes it a 120 BP move with the drawback of lowering the attacks, so Contrary Users like Serperior also benefit from this.
TLDR: The Stellar type is not really worth it

Tbh I find it ironic that when they finally removed missingno and bad egg from the games, they started being incredibly buggy.
Like those glitch pokemon were keeping the stability of the games, or just a coincidence. Especially since missingno was used as a placeholder for situations where no pokemon can be loaded, almost as a means to prevent the game crashing from the oversight.
Ofc they sometimes crash themselves but it makes you wonder if they should add them back just to be that placeholder again.

(I am writing my review of the game before I have finished the video)
I quite liked this game. Plot wise I thought the 3 plot story worked really well, and was quite dark as well, which was not what I expected but was absolutely welcome; and I also like that Gamefreak is continuing to set up the law regarding multiple/alternate universes from the previous generations. The Pokemon designs (except Espathra’s pre-evolution), this gen look awesome, with some personal highlights Dondozo, Great Tusk and Chien-Pao. The rivals in this game are fantastic, as well as some of the gym leaders (I wasn’t a fan of all the gym leaders, but Larry is in the game so that evens it out). Another thing I like about this game is that Miradon/Koridon feel great to control in the overworld; which is essential to the fun factor of the game. My main issues for this game come from the competitive focus Gamefreak focused on (cough cough Flutter Mane), and the over world. I feel as if Gamefreak made Pokemon and some moves this generation too linier in terms of their star spread and movepool; or just flat out way too OP for their own good. For example, The String Cheese lookin Metal Pipe gets a steel 100% Original pulse that lowers its special attack by only 1 stage (on top of its busted ability that negates all status moves); while Pokemon such as Espathra, Kingambit, or Houndstone have to run specific moves (by design) such as Last Respects, Stored Power, or Sucker Punch. The paradox Pokemon in this game also gets weird treatment. While some Pokémon like Iron Thorns get shafted by their moveset and stat-spread, Flutter Mane gets to become near untouchable with a fairy/ghost type and has 135 speed (how did it even go extinct in the first place?). My other criticism is that most of the over world in the base game feels too bland. I love certain areas of the game like all of area zero and that Autumn Forest area, but those areas feel few and far between with the vast amount of just plain grass around the over world. The water also feels a bit lacking with not many particularly memorable water areas within the base game except if you want to find certain water Pokemon. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
Edit: After listening to your full review, I agree with nearly everything you said, particularly with the Terra Raid battles and the awesome side quest of Blood Moon Ursaluna. The only thing I didn’t agree with is Revroom’s name being stupid, because it’s not. It’s amazing! Great video btw, I hope you get lots more subscribers!

Unpopular opinion: Nemona is one of the worst rivals. I’ll take Hau or Trace over her any time. She’s “love battles” the character, with nothing interesting about her. I don’t really mind her, as the story is heavily carried by Arven and Penny, but I don’t care for her at all… now that I think about it, I wonder if they purposely made Victory Road weaker, to prop up the other story quests.
Edit: She’s not “challenging”. My team of Eevee evolutions tore through her team like it was nothing. And I didn’t exactly battle the route trainers in this game either. Didn’t really do raids for exp candy either.

My thoughts on each rival character:
Nemona: okay, but not super interesting. Shes a pretty standard rival, who's not particularly deep, but is serviceable. Also, telling her you don't wanna be friends is one of the funniest things in the game.
Penny: By far the best of the three. Love the shy nerd archetype, and she does it wonderfully, while having a very strong story. The failure of the school faculty resulting in bullied kids becoming delinquents, is a very real storyline.
Arven singlehandedly made me want yo stop playing. I hate him. When you first meet him hes a massive dick, then they try to get you to care by literally pulling the sick dog cliche. Except it makes literally no sense. They just say "oh the pokemon center couldn't heal it", but never explain why. I can get my whole team beaten unconscious by the god of the universe, and the pokemon center heals them to perfect condition in five seconds. I refuse to believe they couldn't heal arvens dog, unless they give me an actual reason. His story then becomes "trading medicine failed my, time to find magic natural cures". Boy, sure hope theres not like, a worldwide pandemic happening when this game releases, that could be incredibly tone deaf. Then the third story happens and Arven doesn't do anything. He gets like, three lines in what's supposed to be the culmination of his story, and you could write him out without much changing. Its really lame.

I can't stand Paradox Pokemon. Some of them are cool concepts, but there's just so many. It comes across as lazy. I welcomed regional variants with very mild skepticism, because they were fairly rare. But it almost felt like every time I turn the corner there's a new one. But I also feel like there's too many legendaries as well. There's so many legendaries you could make a whole Pokedex for a game with just legendaries/mythical/ultra beasts/etc now. Those are random gripes, but they irked me a lot with this one.

SV made me appreciate SwSh way more. I was so brutal with my criticisms of SwSh but I had no idea what was to come with SV.
The performance is so abysmal that you actually lose time in game because of the frame stuttering. The game looks like it came from N64. The ground looks like wallpaper everywhere you go. It completely ruins the experience. Which sucks because the Pokédex for this region is pretty great, I can understand why you called it a mixed bag. The story is fun. The mechanics and quality of life improvements are nice. But horrible when you consider the price of the game and dlc.
SwSh still looks the best in every regard but I’ll admit the DLCs carried them. If you had fun in SV, I’m happy for you but I think we all deserve better for the next game when we’re dropping $150 to buy 2 copies for our kids or to play with our partners.

If you feel the need to pick up every item on the ground, there are a couple Pokémon fast enough to keep up with you on your bike so they can pick them up without you having to stop and hit A. There might be more, but my preferred mons are espathra, revavroom, and iron valiant. Weirdly, not all fast Pokémon are fast while running around.

Also, stellar Tera might not be good in VGC, it’s very situational, but it’s great for raids because it keeps the damage boost permanently instead of just lasting one usage per attack.

I wish you were made to return to school occasionally l, i decided to not do the e4 stuff till i did the midterm exams and it was alright considering i did all the gyms out of order but enjoyed some classes and learned one thing. And i couldnt play past the E4 cause arvin was such a lazy emotional grab for an easy story that even the anime had the dying dog episode which ruined it all for me and disliked Arvin soon sending him out minutes after he gets healed. I also called out penny as the Star one since she looks like a merd who would do the mysterious schtick, love her lol. I also just hate Rhyme cause her first intro "battle" ends up being that "rap" battle which seems to feel bad a lil since the one gym leader had to have her Apron removed cause stereotypes. What happens if you throw a frustration 100 ogrepon out on the kid?

Dlc should have been free to make up for how awful it was. Super greedy to charge for the dlc on each version. So if you have both, and wanna play it on both... +$80. Absurd. $40 is way too much for like 6 hours of rushed crap.

As a whole, SV are very close to being some of my favorite Pokemons games rivaling Gen 5 & Gen 7 with a lot of my favorite Pokemon with my #1 being dethroned from Silvally by Terapagos! It just sucks that, in my opinion, they didn't handle the lore of Terapagos, Terastlization, and the Paradoxes all too well. Because they make it seem a lot more powerful and terrifying when it Stellar Terastalizes but we don't get to see that terrifying region or world ending power it has at all besides the Master Ball getting split and a crack in the earth or how it actually relates to all of the Paradoxes, Terastalization, Time/Time Travel + the machine, Dreams, and apparently how it's related to an ancient civilization that lived down in Area Zero and the Area Zero Underdepths along side it apparently that we're told about when we first got to the Underdepths in a book you can just skip right over and is never mentioned or shown ever again which would have been cool since the codename of either the game or Area Zero areas are called Atlantis☠. That coupled with the entire segment only lasting 20-30 minutes and not going with Nemona, Penny, and especially Arven soured that much more when he has a very deep personal connection to the area and Pokemon considering the effects it had on his family and life.
(Along with Terapagos not being hexagons when it's Stellar and the orb it rest upon not being another turtle to complete the Turtles All The Way Down paradox it's trying to portray but that might just be nitpicking at that point 🤷‍♂)

I've been a pokemon fan since Gen 1 as a kid and have grown up with the franchise. SV has been my favorite generation of games since Gold and Silver. They're so close to being the best of all time imo, just missed a few key things. Performance issues, better world graphics, much better attack animations, more lively pokemon animations both in battle and in the overworld, and for the love of Arceus they need to add voice acting. The parts of Area Zero that were voice acted were excellent. Imagine how much better Arven's storyline with Mabosstiff would have been with heartfelt voice acting! Gym Leaders not having scaling team levels was a massive disappointment, this is a precedent established in episode ONE of the anime where Brock picks a team based on how many badges Ash has. There's no reason they shouldn't have implemented this in the first ever game that allows you to fight the gyms in any order you want, it's a huge missed opportunity.

The way they set up scarlet and violet and legends for that matter made the games impossible for someone like myself who is Visually impaired to play the game. Due to access to Flamigo and Nacli having below level 10 encounters, you can actually complete the entire titan quest before your first badge since any Pokemon caught below level 10 will always obey. Given those two Pokemon are also available regardless of your title or starter, everyone has easy access to cheese the entire titan quest.
Its a shame that Team Star only offers TMs, because it means the easiest way to clear through any run is finishing Titans, then gyms, then Team Star after you're already so overleveled they just get mopped lol.

I think this is basically the ultimate pokémon game. So many quality of life improvements and it’s easier than ever to breed and train battle ready pokémon. It’s also easy to shiny hunt, and I often boot it up just to fly around. I also thought the DLC was great, and love that the second one focused on double battles.
My only downsides were: less customization options, tera hats look goofy, and (obviously) performance could be better
