      That's why I feel like TV shows are such a big thing now. Ppl will stay subscribed for the next season which is yearly where it takes at least two years to make a film.

    You state in this video that in the traditional exhibition model movies stood to make as much on exhibition as they did on home media, not true. Home media has always been significantly less than box office.
    In the example of Fight Club you mentioned, the global box office was 105 million globally. DVD sales we’re 13 million units, not sure what the gross profit on that would be, maybe 20-30 mill. Mind you fightclub is an outlier on the home media front.
    Also, the movie wasn’t a flop, it exceeded its budget by 45 mil in box office. Fox just anticipated more, and cheap reporting tagged the word flop next to it. Also, sidebar, that movie would have definitely made more if Fox wasn’t notoriously risk averse to marketing.
    Also, also. Adjusted for inflation FightClub is in the ballpark budget of superhero movies, atleast at the lower quartile.

    You totally missed the biggest point - Hollywood is focused now on the global market which provides more of the revenue than the domestic United States revenue. That makes entire swaths of potential plots off limits because of cultural sensitivities

      There is an element of truth in what you say for some movies, such as top gun, but the original star wars taps into basic tropes which are common to all cultures. It should be noted the worst movies from Hollywood in 2020’s are those which offend many foreign cultures, such as Light-year and Strange World.
      Personally I feel its because there is a lack of meritocracy in Hollywood resulting in a steady and constant drop in quality, which can be seen with the very poor writing. The Hollywood decline has been funded by cheap money, but that is ending now and I suspect Hollywood will pivot to quality by bypassing the incompetent management and writers. A good example of this is The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which is doing amazingly well despite the attacks from legacy Hollywood.

      There’s no country with bigger cultural sensitivity than the US. I don’t care a bit if a movie talks about China in a positive light so they can sell it to the Chinese, but I do have a problem with woks movies that only appeal to the most stupid Americans.

      @@peterfmodel you have studios now requiring certain things like racial minorities or minority gender preference is being written into the script, for no particular reason other than “diversity”. This is more than just a theory.
      The Tom Clancy film “The Sum of All Fears” was butchered because in the book, the persons who detonated the nuclear weapon at the Super Bowl in Denver were from the Middle East. The scriptwriter changed the bad guys to white racists from South Africa, which made absolutely no sense.
      An important aspect of the book was the notion that this plot was triggered by an agreement to turn Jerusalem into a Vatican-like city protected by the United Nations.
      Another important piece of the puzzle was that Jack Ryan figured out that the nuclear weapon that exploded matched the chemistry of uranium that was refined in South Carolina, meaning that the United States provided the enriched fuel to Israel and not Russia.
      Clancy was so angry that he announced that was the last movie he would authorize (he has since died).

    Suggestion of next video: The Economic Explanation of Why MODERN ANIME SUCK
    Bro' I'm glad I witnessed the golden era of anime... 90s and 2000s had some unbelievable stuff. Now look at all these shitty manga adaptations that take so much time to be produced... And look at this sea of mud everywhere. Where are the indie anime like Serial Experiments Lain? Can a gritty, dark, atmospheric anime be produced today? Could Shigurui be made today? Texhnolyze? Even mainstream super famous anime was dope as fuck, e.g. Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop.

    • @julianoallard8398
      @julianoallard8398 9 месяцев назад +2

      Of course, with the anime industry nowadays, it has fallen into this cycle of ensuring predictability and the hype around special effects although not to the same extent as Holywood, I still believe there's still some pretty decent anime content out there today such as Demon Slayer, AoT and Dr Stone to name a few. However, another problem that's unique with anime is so many studios and writers push out a lot of fan service which can mask the overall quality of an anime and just serve to please a fanbase that only care about how sexualized the female characters are.

  • @aurdreaweiman1377
    @aurdreaweiman1377 Год назад +11

    I just want to express how refreshing it is to see a video that is critical of "Hollywood" for the right reasons! There are so many content creators out there putting up clickbait that has no function but to push their political agenda. Anti-SJW/anti-woke garbage is after all, nothing but a political agenda. I'm so sick of seeing reviews that are all about "there are females in this movie. How dare they?" Of course, they aren't that polite! Thank you for putting a spotlight on the actual issues, intelligently and thoughtfully. The over corporatization of beloved IP's, the McDonald's of movies approach of large studios like Disney, Warner Bros, etc., and the crushing of the people behind the scenes has made most big name movies not worth the price of popcorn, IMHO. Writers, special effects studios, animators, indie directors (that don't sell out) are all just getting bulldozed by this big media machine that simply does not and can not produce anything new, creative or inspired because taking risks doesn't make shareholders happy. Basically, Capitalism. Capitalism exploits creativity, and creativity just isn't something that thrives unless its nurtured. So, there's the need to mass produce profitable, empty blockbusters, at the same time as the over- politicization of pretty much all popular media thats being driven by right wing extremism. Every blunder by Hollywood is then commondered to push the narrative that the problem with modern movies is that they all have the "wrong" demographics. Either its "strong female characters" being hated or "wokeness," etc. Meanwhile, I can only wish that these big studios were anywhere near as forward thinking as they are angrily accused of. I wish Hollywood" was even half so-called "woke!" Instead, we have superhero movies that maybe try changing a few demographics just so we dont literally mix them up, and the internet thinks even that is just too daring! We've never needed courage in filmmaking more than right now.

    • @danicoleb5394
      @danicoleb5394 7 месяцев назад +1

      I'm glad you said this. I've noticed the same narrative being spewed which is always a cloak for sexism and racism. To some extent I could've agreed with some opponents who feel Hollywood's gotten too "woke" and does make egregious, stereotypical decisions around its characters but often times the people rejecting "woke Hollywood" are doing it because they hate the idea of cinema that isn't geared to whites and males.

    If US puts out mid-budget movies, it wont be a hit here in asia coz asian cinemas are getting better if not better than hollywood mid budget movies like dramas, rom/coms, suspense. Korean movies and tvs are now so much better than what holywood puts out, then theres the chinese movies, even thai and vietnam movies are getting better and better. That is why hollywood should stick with high budget movies coz even europeans are putting out good quality almost high budget movies
