Looking at some of these comments, I feel like some of you didn't listen to the whole album.
The main character literally gets brainwashed into joining a violent terrorist organization/cult that takes advantage of his desire to make a change, and becomes one of their assassins. He is troubled by what he must do, but only truly realizes he's joined the wrong people when they order him to kill Sister Mary (his only friend and comfort in life) for knowing too much. Sister Mary also reveals she's suicidal because of her troubled past and involvement with the organization. When he tries to escape with her, he's framed for her murder, and ends up institutionalized, no longer able to make any difference at all, and having been discarded by the people he dedicated his life to.
Yes, this song is talking about some very real issues that are still relevant today, but the album is also warning the listener to not trust political revolutionary organizations that seek to indoctrinate and brainwash those who want to make a positive difference on the world.

"I used to trust the media to tell me the truth" is such a great line. I also love the line in "take hold of the flame" that says "Throw down the chains of oppression that bind you With the air of freedom the flame grows bright We are the strong, the youth united
We are one, we are children of the light"

I listened to Warning when it come out in 84. Then did not listen to this band for years until my girlfriend got the OM tape. I was surprised she liked this band, surprised the heck out of me. We wore that tape out playing it in my truck and ghetto blaster. Can't believe 34 years later [did i just say thirty four years]??? Still one of the best damn albums Ive ever listened too. Never get tired of it.

How interesting to come across a comment from 3 years ago [its 6/19/2019]
The message in this song IS relevant, but maybe not in the way this poster intended?
The "Revolution" in this song isnt the 'hero'. The progressives rally the idiot youth to their cause and control them through toxic ideology.
When 'Nicky' finally realizes he has been duped later in the album, he even says:
"...We're being used and fed... like Rats..in experiments..."
So maybe we should all be super careful before signing up for the 'Revolution'?
Oh! 100% Agree with their first statement. This is an amazing song.
