  • This is the second event in the "From Moment to Movement" Series: Conversations on Race in America in collaboration with Howard University.
Protect and serve. That's the traditional role of the police, and yet events over the past few months have forced communities across the country to ask: Who, exactly, are they protecting and serving? Recently, the increasing reports of bias, militarization and excessive use of force against communities of color spurred President Obama to appoint a Police Task Force to recommend innovative ways to rebuild public trust and simultaneously reduce crime.
On March 2, the task force recommendations were released. Do they include ideas that could create real change or will they amount to little more than a regurgitation of the failed "solutions" of the past? What has or can be done at the local and federal level to improve policing? Should the task of improvement rest solely in the hands of the local community? Join New America in collaboration with Howard University for the second event in the “From Moment to Movement” series to discuss the feasibility of the President’s Police Task Force recommendations and the past, present and future of policing.

For this guy who makes excuses for police misconduct; I would like to ask him why is it that the so-called good cops don't try to maintain the integrity of the law by at least boldly speaking against the tyranny exemplified by their fellow officers?

The talks aren't needed around their dinner tables. They've been doing that for centuries which only helps to reinforce the status quo.
Not to mention, how does a conversation that excludes those who are subject promote change?
These talks need to be held in public in order, if possible, to reach resolution.

"No police officer goes out with the intent on harassing someone.." he cant speak for every officer, in every dept, nor the community's interactions w/ them. Just punish those that violate the public trust, all while sullying the badge. Leave good men / women to do good police work.

Exactly! He's a talking head. I'm watching "We Own the City" which is retelling the story of the Baltimore Police Department and the abuse of power that was rampant leading ti hundreds of cases being overturned.
And even when he says how his Department fires people, well those bad officers go on to other other departments.
This conversation would be very different today as the tragedies highlighted the gaps in his idealism with speaking to the book.

This is loaded with information that should be mandatory training in all educational endeavors. Police training, teacher training, business, medical and political training. We hold law enforcement to a higher standard because they have the power of life and death in their hands. Implicit bias while fully armed.

I'am glad I finally bump'd into this Great Conversation, and yet, everyone sitting there seem sooooo physically uncomfortable. Which makes me wonder...why do we select the most un-comfy panel/stage seating?? Why do we not provide table-tops so our guests may spread their intellectual wings??

Thos man is representing the police and getting defensive! Not a good look, my man! Take yourself out of them "cop shoes" and represent all of people as human beings including yourself. How would you like to be treated by a police officer when he/she approaches you!?! Suspicion is a defense mechanism used to deflect the true intent.
