HBO was my childhood. I remember spending time with family watching close fights with the Great Harold Lederman always telling us his scorecards “Okay Jim!” R.I.P
I remember from the early and mid 00s when I was a kid watching SO many banger fights on HBO Boxing, it was the best, from the 24/7 documentaries leading up to heated fights and watching so many back and forth fights, the hype it would generate, and the fact almost EVERYONE I knew would gather up either at my house or watch it at a friends and go absolutely ballistic. Ever since we hadn’t had HBO boxing it hasn’t been the same :/
The first event of boxing after dark Roy is doing commentary and claims Barrera vs McKinney is the perfect matchup for their first event! Man how right Roy was.
Roy's talent/skill was great and will probably never be seen again. However, for you to say that you are a "die hard fan" of a man, I sure hope that you are his wife. Otherwise, this is a very strange comment by you.
Roy Jones is truly the greatest who ever did it. He made me fall in love with boxing, at age 5, I was at my Uncles house.. and he was watching Roy/Griffin 2. That night changed my life, thank you for this upload. Nothing like Roy content! Truly my superhero growing up, and will always be the greatest fighter I’ve EVER seen in my lifetime…
I was a 9yr old Australian watching the Olympics when I first saw him, he was levels above everyone. My father pointed him out to me. Years later, i see him as a pro and was mesmerised. My favourite fighter by far, levels above.
HBO truly was THE outstanding deliverer of excellent boxing broadcasting. How they took over the scene in the 80's, owned it in the 90's, perfected it in 00's and then ended in 2018. It was at its peak of production value in the late 80's all the way till middle 00's when they had deep inside coverage of the boxers, and not to forget there awesome TV intros that pumped you up for the big fights. And the still unbeatble expert commentating offered from the late-great Emanuel Steward (RIP), Roy Jones Jr. and "Big" George Foreman was so solid in how they offered near perfect analyzes and knowledge to the viewers. NEVER have I seen better coverage in any sport then what they offered, especally Steward, who was arguably always spot on, with Roy a well 2nd best - and only HBO had them. Showtime, ESPN, Eurosport, Skynews etc-etc could never beat them no matter what they did. Now with DAZN, PBC or what-ever they hold no candle to what HBO and Showtime had.
I am from the UK and I love all my UK fighters, grew up on Benn,Eubank and Watson,But Roy Jones Jr is the closest I have ever seen to perfection in boxing,he would of destroyed all the aforementioned names but they wanted none of him.The performance he put in against Toney blew my head clean off 🫥 Rip to HBO.Hancho you've done it again.👊🫶🇬🇧
In hindsight, wouldn't you give Eubank a punchers chance? Eubank was crafty, unorthodox, TOUGH & had one shot fight ending power, he was never out of a fight, especially when his back was against the wall, which it most definitely woulda been vs Roy. At the time, I couldn't see any of them getting close to Roy but in hindsight, Eubank would have been a worthy opponent. Watson was too technically correct, he woulda been just another day at the office for Roy. Benn was too rough around the edges, he woulda got absolutely dissected by Roy. That James Toney vs Roy fight was close, Roy edged him out in enough of the rounds but Toney was never outa the fight, Eubank mighta went as close as Toney did especially in 10, 11, 12, he was a REAL danger especially down the stretch.
@@lewixsham7416 sorry that was a forgetful of me,love Calzage,Britain's best ever supermiddle defo,I do think if Jones and Joe fought at both there peaks Jones would of took it I think.Either way it would of been a great great fight rather than the one sided spanking Joe gave him late in both there careers.Cant believe I never mentioned Calzage but I have now.👊🫶🇬🇧
@@SPIDERM0OSE Yeah good shout, obviously pre Watson,Eubanks engine was phenomenal and he might of messed with Roy with his unorthodox ways, would Still bet on Jones I think though. As for James Toney it seemed like he could not be bothered sometimes, never Ko 'ed.👊🫶🇬🇧
@@Midlander77. That pre Watson talk is myth. Eubank finished many fighters after that night & he landed a very similar shot on Collins when he decked him, Watson was just very unlucky it went that way for him, but those two punches are exactly what Im talking about with him, when the chips were down, when his back was to the wall, when he needed it the most, he had that one shot fight ending power. I don't think he would have done as well as Toney did vs Roy but he would have been in the fight similarly to how Toney was, out pointed but not broken. When it comes to being tough, you have to look at his 2 Benn fights, his 2 Watson fights & his scraps with Carl Thompson. He showed his toughness & ring craft vs Calzaghe on short notice. Eubank was tricky, especially at the British & European Level, I don't think he would have been effective enough to beat Reggie Johnson, Michael Nunn, Toney, McCallum or Jones Jr, but he would have been a worthy opponent for any of them but not all of em, he woulda been chewed up, spat out n burned out after coming through the ringer vs any 3 of em. I dig what yer saying about Toney, I think it was his attitude that prevented him from being truly among the greats, but what he lacked in effort he made up for with ring craft n trickery. I think it was Steve Collins who told a story about Toney in the gym, when they were both training with Freddie Roach, Colling was talking about Toneys natural talent & said that when everyone else was drinking water in between sparring rounds, Toney was guzzling from a 2 litre bottle of Coca-Cola. With a little bit more dedication & discipline he might been a better athlete n better able to compete with Roy, but its shoulda, woulda, coulda
Boxing has not been the same without HBO. Everything seems behind closed doors now and you don't see when fights are on. I especially miss Jim Lampley, Larry Merchant and Emmanuel Steward.
Thank you, Hancho. Your research and editing are top-notch. You captured the energy of classic boxing that I watched. The sweet science has not been the same without the voices and names behind HBO's coverage. It helped make so many boxers household names. And gave us the pleasure and joy and education from listening to retired and still active boxers on the mic.
Hancho's work, absolutely on-point, as always. HBO and Showtime were the two great twin pillars that held up the sport of boxing for half a century. You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone.

RJJ is possibly the greatest boxer to ever do it. I can’t think of any boxer that could match him. Footwork, hand speed, his jab, the hook, his balance, control of distance, and power. Who else put it all together as effectively Roy?
Tommy Hearns gives him HELL. As fast, as good with the lead hand but with bigger power in the right cross. Ray Leonard was a similar package to Roy but Ray was a better finisher.
