Few things grind against the manic pace, consumerism, and commitment wariness of Western culture like the rhythmic, ascetic, and vowed life of monks. In this video, I'm spending a day in the life of a Catholic monk at St. Anselm's Abbey in Washington D.C. As politicians and businessman whirl through the city just outside their doors, the monks live each day much like the last, praying the psalms in community and living out the rule of St. Benedict. During my time, I experienced everything from the 5am wake up call (filmed in real time) to communal meals and the beauty of unhurried walks through nature. It was a throughly moving experience for me, allowing me to be exposed to what I see as perhaps the most beautiful part of the ancient Christian tradition: monasticism. If you've been following my journey, you know that I've been trying to make sense of church history for over a year now, and this has led me not only to interview expert theologians, but also to experience the liturgical rhythms of various traditions. I invite you to join me on the journey in this video, and if you enjoy it, become a part of the community here at Gospel Simplicity.

    About Gospel Simplicity:
Gospel Simplicity began as a RUclips channel in a Moody Bible Institute dorm. It was born out of the central conviction that the gospel is really good news, and I wanted to share that with as many people as possible. The channel has grown and changed over time, but that central conviction has never changed. Today, we make content around biblical and theological topics, often interacting with people from across the Christian tradition with the hope of seeking greater unity and introducing people to the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel, the good news about Jesus.
    About the host:
Hey! My name is Austin, and I'm a 23 year old guy who’s passionate about the beautiful simplicity and transformative power of the gospel. I believe that the gospel, the good news about Jesus, is really good news, and I’m out to explore, unpack, and share that good news with as many people as possible. I'm a full blown Bible and Church History nerd that loves getting to dialogue with others about this, learning as much as I can, and then teaching whatever I can. I grew up around Frederick, MD where I eventually ended up working my first job at a church. They made the mistake of letting me try my hand at teaching, and instantly I fell in love. That set me on a path for further education, and I'm currently a student at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL, studying theology. On any given day you can find me with my nose in a book or a guitar in my hands. Want to get to know me more? Follow me and say hi on Instagram at: @austin.suggs

Once I was convinced of the Catholic faith I spoke to many of my professors about it and they said they wouldn't in good conscience let me graduate if I truly assented to the Catholic faith. I left that semester because I thought it would be wrong to take another semesters worth of donor money for my education. No monks or nuns in the Bible. No cardinals either, and Jesus commands us not to call religious leaders master rabbi or father. Bishops are commanded in the Bible to be the husband of one wife with children. The Bible teaches that salvation is by Grace through faith and not of works. Catholicism is not biblical which means it is devilish.

This "freedom" just shows that it's manmade, since the religion is "inclusive" and fulfill selfish desires. As you say, YOU get to decide. You can do whatever YOU like. Very selfish. Very self-centered. You can "build your own religion" and your own faith. You get to choose. All those reasons just confirm how manmade and non supernatural this religion is. And how selfish it is.

I spent most of my life as a protestant. Even graduating from a popular Christian University. An interest in early church history eventually lead to me becoming Catholic after many years of studying and understanding the doctrines . I have developed a more intimate relationship with Jesus Christ because of this. The sacrament of the Eucharist is truly life changing! Unfortunately, many protestants friends and pastors that I know believe it is a war. They are VERY anti-Catholic without true knowledge of the church doctrine. I know because I was raised with this prejudiced mindset. In fact, the church I attended before my conversion actually had the pastor preach this at his pulpit. The untruths that they spread saddens me. How much more must it sadden our Creator. Regardless, I am SO THANKFUL for my Catholic Faith.

The unity is an issue. I converted to Catholicism from evangelical Church. My so called Protestant sisters and brothers or so I thought have done nothing but pounce for a theological debate with rapid fire arguments not even really having a full grasp of Catholics. They won’t even acknowledge we have the same gospel out of ignorance and it is very heart breaking. We really need to take the time and effort to understand one another at least so we know where we stand and why without cutting down others.

I can definitely agree on the importance of incorporating specific time for prayer in our daily life bringing us closer to God. When I can go for daily mass I go, unfortunately sometimes I can't because of work, so I just go on the weekends. For more than eight months I've been praying the rosary every day with the rosary crew, a couple of months ago I decided to add to my daily prayers the Divine Mercy chaplet, and through the day I try to find time to do prayers of petition, thanksgiving and adoration, including singing (even if it's in silence). I feel that the more we pray, the more we put in perspective how important is God in our lives and how much quality time we can dedicate to Him so our desire to get closer increases. Don't let the evil one fool you, there's always a way to find time in our day that we can dedicate to God.

Some of that is an act of the will, more than perfect intellectual understanding and assent. I’m not dodging a direct answer, it’s more the question you are asking (as I’m reading it) seems more about doctrinal lessons and less about family relationship. The relationship is the angle (or the lens) through which to look. Our orthodox brethren do not accept papal infallibility however we Catholics view them as same family and we can share the same sacramental meal (though the orthodox themselves disagree). History has a long memory, but it is up to us and the Holy Spirit to be open to love. Remember Love, Mercy, and Forgiveness are at the heart of the Christian life. Pax Domini Sit Semper Vobiscum!

6:00 We share a common baptism with any Protestant who has a Trinitarian baptism. As a Catholic, I have come to appreciate more and more the significance of that. It means that my Protestant brothers and sisters have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. They have been buried with Christ and have risen with Him and have the pledge of immortality. They have access to the Father through the Son our Lord. These are no small things. And I think we need to preface any disagreement we may have with one another by affirming that common brotherhood and sisterhood in Christ.

You are fundamentally correct in a sense, and it shows how dangerous are those who anarchically teach the necessity of a sacrilegious rebaptism and how provincial (far from truly and authentically Catholic) they are. Still, by baptismal unity (“one baptism”) we believe some non-Catholics are incorporated into the Catholic Church in a rather imperfect way (abandoning the “one faith” through acts of rebellion nevertheless), which points to Catholic unity indeed and to the corporeal indissolubility of the Body of Christ. Albeit separation is a fact relatable to those imperfections, not anyone outside of the visible Catholic community can be blamed for the mortal sin of hatred, faction, dissension and schism (Gal 5, 20). If they do not hinder access to truth and to integral perfect community (for example, if ignorance is somehow not invincible in a hypothetical situation), like someone who does whatever he can to be anywhere but in the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church that Our Lord built upon Peter and on the fundamentals of the apostles and the prophets, one can legitimately assume they are united - imperfectly - to us in a mystical sense. The levels of imperfections will vary among non-Catholic churches or ecclesial communities.

By the grace of God I met 3 catholic exorcist/ deliverance experts in one month. I converted to Roman Catholicism because it is the church started by Jesus. The Bible came from the Catholics. When you ask Protestants about the 3 wise men, they know little about them. They are Roman Catholic saints- relics whose bodies are in coffins in the back of the Cathedral of Cologne Germany. Catholics have had miracles of the Eucharist … due to “TransSubStanTiation”… That separates Catholics from Protestants in a huge way once you understand. /// I spent 2 weekends and a week living with Benedictine monks in Oceanside CA doing a vocation vacation. I was turned down by them when I applied to be a monk there, but they referred me to be a lay worker at the Trappist Cistercian monastery in Huntsville Utah. I lived and worked there for 13 years until the monastery was closed. A quote I like… “To have lived as a monk for a day, a week, a month, a year… is NOT the same as having lived as a monk for life… “

But your point is well taken -- thanks be to God for the ultra-traditional monasteries that provide a "hermeneutic of continuity." But I've been to enough monasteries to know that this side of heaven, we will always fall short of whom we can be in Christ. And, what might work for some will be repulsive and triggering for others. @@patrickmcnamara7143 Excellent! I was not in the virtues class, and I've been confused with another "Ignacio" who is on staff at CUA. From what I have heard, he's a much better man than I am!

I think a note on videos like this which do focus on unity and which I think every Christian ought to pray for is this: Yes, we have differences. Some are incredibly important and some probably not as much as we might think. This doesn’t mean we cannot speak to and learn from one another and I think it’s good to always be reminded that, when it comes to differences in doctrine between Christians, it must always come from love and concern for the other’s well-being in body and soul. Anything apart from that is not coming from God. If it’s about being right or sounding smart, that’s the ego rearing its ugly bead. Ultimately, those who put their faith in Christ will be brought together as one and prayer should be an equally important part of that for every Christian. I unfortunately fall out of good habits quite often but by the grace of God, each day is anew.

Im Catholic and really enjoyed your video. A life of prayer is a life well lived. My husband was a devote Catholic and loved his church and praying, but after 50 years in the church, he killed himself. As his wife I will never know why he did that. Then 3 years later our daughter killed herself. My heart is pierced by many swords now. But Im hanging on due to my faith and my church.

So sorry to hear that... Have you tried to contact an exorcist? May sound stupid, I know I heard from more than one that such weird strings of suicides in the family could be a curse.

Great video concept. Just a little different from your dorm at Moody's?

Haha, the cell actually reminded me of my dorm, but certainly a more fun place to film overall!

Pray for the reunification of His great church. We aren’t so different. From Protestant to Catholic to Orthodox. Let’s return to Him together.

Glad I came across your video. I just moved to upstate SC, considered the "bible belt" according to locals here. Being Catholic, I was hesitant to tell people of my faith to baptists, methodists, etc the main denomination of the area. You said it well in the beginning of the video, the mindset is we are to believe we are warring factions but I've learned we are not. People are open and accepting that we all serve Christ in our own ways and the Lord brings us together for a reason. God Bless.

My father is a protestant, my mother a devout Catholic. All four of us children became Catholics as adults through RCIA. My father remains a protestant, but attends mass with my mom, and with us when we are in town. Why? Because we are all one body. One Christian body. The protestants are not factions, they simply protest certain things... and guess what? That has always been the case. And we all pray that someday we will be in unity. Until then, we learn from one another. We grow. We introduce eachother new new aspects of Christ. and it is so beautiful!!
