The Steam Deck is a highly anticipated handheld gaming machine made by Valve. The Deck runs Linux, and as a Linux gamer, I feel like I should share my thoughts on it and tell you why I think that it is very likely for the Steam Deck to flop.

They literally showed it playing Doom Eternal, Death Stranding, and Devil May Cry 5 at 720p 60fps.
The Deck is approximately as performant as a PS4 or Xbox One Slim, but with the benefit of RDNA 2 features. Most of all the target resolution is 720p/800p, easily achievable for most AAA games since most are made to run on the PS4/XB1 anyway.
I understand being skeptical but you are being very pessimistic with no real data to back it up, especially since we've already seen what it is capable of.

Very pessimistic, 100% games should be click and play on deck. I know a lot of people are freaking out over the new linus vid, where many of the "gold rated" games on proton were messy, and thought to themselves "wow, I or most gamers don't wanna fiddle around for an hour trying to get a game working". But you gotta understand theres like 1000 different linux Distros, something that works on proton with popOS might not work with Manjaro, with deck however, it's all one toolset, one driver set, same hardware, all they have to focus on is SteamOS instead of Linux as a whole, it's identical to how consoles work in the console gaming world. As for anticheat on deck, I'm sure it'll be soon, perhaps shortly after launch but not long, since EAC and battle-eye work on linux, alot of devs have allowed it to work on linux in their games already like gary (dev of rust) etc. I'm sure once this starts selling devs will impliment it, as far as i've heard, with something like battle-eye its as simple as sending an email, theres simply no reason not too, they dont even have to work on updates for linux, crash reports, or bugs in general, just let proton handle that or the community doing their own fixes when problems like that arise. You mentioned about how we could only dream about playing siege on linux, but seige does work on linux, however whilst yes the online play isn't possible at the moment with terrorist hunt and other things only being avaliable, I think it goes to show we won't have to dream long.

I think you're excessively pessimistic about the Steam Deck, you wildly underestimate the appeal of it and how smooth the experience of gaming on it is. All reports so far point to it being a shockingly competent handheld gaming PC, with most people proclaiming that they're surprised at how much "it just works."
You say that it's too expensive, but have you seen the cost of current hardware, including scalped consoles? A Series X or PS5 often goes for $700, a 6800 XT goes for $1,400 and the best deal I've seen on a GPU lately is a 6600 XT 8GB for $450, which sold out in minutes.
Don't compare the Steam Deck to the 6800 XT, that's goofy. Compare it to the Xbox Series S. XSS has 20 CUs at 1.55GHz, and I believe the Steam Deck has 12 CUs at a similar clock speed. XSS plays most games at 1080p 60FPS with headroom, even plays some games like Scarlet Nexus at 1440p 60FPS. The Steam Deck targets around half the resolution. Half the CPU cores, basically same architecture and similar clock speeds, and we can infer it'll play the overwhelming majority of games at 1280x800 at 60FPS or 30FPS. FSR will help for some terribly optimized games or more high-end games coming out in the next couple years, but I think games that require ray tracing might be the biggest limiter; I'm sure those would require 640x480 or even be completely unplayable.
Steam Deck is gonna be great. It's already doing really well on pre-orders. I expect very few refunds, and I think a chunk of the userbase will dual-boot Windows, like me. I'm all for giving Linux a go, but you can do basically whatever you want with the hardware.

As a dev, targetting the steam deck is about to make a lot of sense though. It has a baseline spec and has already sold out for now, meaning it has a market and I've a clear target for "MVP". I'm not gonna program for all Linux distros, I'm gonna target the Deck so it works on that specific Linux Distro that has drivers, software support and more uniform hardware than Windows, and let the tech savvy users on other linux distros deal with their own perticular choices. If you look at targetting the Deck specifically, it's more like developing for a console with an open source OS.
Even if I don't see massive success on the Steam Deck, my game will work on basically any PC above potato level and I can still sell to the 50+ million other players on steam.

There are going to be a lot of people out there trying to run CP 2077 or Metro Exodus on the deck, but with low settings and FSR you should get a stable 30 fps in those. In the video, I was warning against people trying to "dock" their deck like they would a Nintendo Switch because it would require running games at a higher resolution, leading to terrible performance. I also wanted to note that the deck's hardware will not be able to run AAA games released 2 years from now because PC games get more and more demanding each year. You would probably have to upgrade to a newer deck model every 2 years to be able to run the latest and greatest games, and the majority of people play AAA games a lot more than those less demanding indie games.

Yeah, you have to be realistic about what you want the deck to do. Playing games like DMC5, DOOM Eternal, RE2, etc. at 30fps is perfectly realistic. Trying to play every big AAA game on the minute it releases at 60fps is not realistic, but many people will try to do that and get mad when their games don't run or run poorly on the 15W APU the deck has.

I'm most hyped about playing some GOG Falcom JRPGs like the Ys series, Tokyo Xanadu and Xanadu Next, plus the whole Legend of Heroes series. Will also play loads of Steam JRPGs like Tales of Arise well.
Steam Deck having 1/9th the compute units of the 6800 XT is totally fine, even at much lower clock speeds. I use a 6800 XT at and play the majority of games at 1440p 170FPS, generally without framerate dips and at max settings.
I fully expect titles like Elden Ring, Sekiro and Tales of Arise to run at native 1280x800 at 60FPS or 30FPS, without requiring FSR, and of course I would expect a poorly optimized title like Cyberpunk 2077 to force me to stick with 30FPS or maybe even drop internal render res with FSR.
I'm going to be dual-booting on my Steam Deck, may use two different SD cards on it. I'm fine with the system having kinks that Valve gradually works out, and I'm totally fine with doing lotsa work on my end to get it to work well. I've wanted a system like the Steam Deck since I was a small child.

    • @doompenguin7453
      @doompenguin7453  3 года назад

The idea was that the 6800 XT runs on the same architecture, and there are plenty of benchmarks of that GPU, so if you want to estimate the performance of the deck's GPU, just take the 6800 XT's performance at that resolution and divide by 13. This will be a good approximation only because the architecture is the same. Comparing compute performance doesn't really give you an accurate estimate of gaming performance if you compare GPUs of a different architecture. I hope this makes sense.

    • @samuraiBSD
      @samuraiBSD 3 года назад

@@doompenguin7453 I'm not sure if taking the 6800 and dividing by the number of cores in the comparison target really works. For one, graphics hardware doesn't always scale linearly, even within the same graphics core. For another, a lot more goes into a graphics card than just the stream processors/graphics cores/ray tracing cores. There's also memory speed, bus width, clock speed and voltage to consider, along with others. The 6800 is probably one of the worst points of comparison possible without leaving the realm of AMD's hardware. A better comparison would've been devices that work within similar thermal and battery envelopes to what we expect on the Steam Deck -- other integrated graphics processors, and *maybe* low end dedicated graphics like the Nvidia MX chips.
And I already manage to run plenty of (modern) games even on my thin and light laptop with merely an 1165G7 from Intel -- a 4 core 8 thread chip with lower IPC and worse graphics than what we expect from the Steam Deck. At 1080p. Often higher than 30FPS, and sometimes pushing 50 or 60. There's no reason to expect Steam Decks to be able to run big marquee releases at 1080/60 on max settings, but conversely, there's no reason to expect that the majority of my Steam library won't be able to enjoy more than playable framerates at 800p on a Steam Deck. Yes, I may need to turn some settings down, but at that resolution and screen size, does it matter that much?
What we can say, with certainty, is that the RDNA2 cores in the APU the Deck is using will be considerably faster than the Vega graphics in previous APUs that we find in the current crop of PC handhelds (AYA, OneX, GPD), which are already able to run a ton of games at playable or better framerates. We can also axiomatically say that it will be better than any graphics hardware paired up with massively slower memory like DDR4 (some low end Nvidia hardware like the GT 1030), old core designs with low IPC, and other alternative graphics technologies currently available in similar packages (like Intel Xe, PowerVR cores on mobile chips, etc). Quad channel opens up a lot of memory bandwidth that most laptops with iGPUs don't have access to, and add to that a much faster core than the Ryzen 5000 series' Vega and you have something that should be surprisingly powerful within its class.

The steam deck for me is just for playing at 720p low settings running at 30 FPS and I call it a win for the portability. If it runs higher setting than low even medium at 60 FPS is a major win. I see the Steam Deck as more of a supplementary device for your main PC, yes you want to have your PC with you but no one would want to have a crate for your PC tower, monitor, or peripherals.
Sure you can always have a laptop but don't want to spend $1300+ for decent gaming-capable laptop, also you really can't have portable gaming on a laptop as you need a desk or stable surface to place it on.
Most people will have it as a bedside console or on the go commuting to and from school/work. I personally want it basically cause I don't want to be stuck on my desktop or livingroom using steamlink. Being in the backyard, patio. Even during a trip or hike, I can take 30 minute to an hour, play a game and then put it away.
The best thing about it, it is a backlog gaming device primarily. With that said it means playing older titles that you are not playing currently. Most people that want a steam deck already own a capable gaming PC, if they don't it will be a struggle to find it useful if they care about FPS and resolutions. Although, this will be a gate way for many console players to get into PC gaming. Far less expensive than owning a dedicated gaming PC or AYANEO. Because to is valve and steam is one of the biggest PC gaming platform, they can be sure their games will be on their account for years to come, and having cheap bundle games helps. unlike consoles you need to either subscribe to a live service (xbox or ps5) and then you have to consider the life cycle of the console which is roughly 4 to 6 years generally (with the exception of PS3 and Xbox 360).
You are right when you said if people are delusional playing their games at max settings is very unrealistic, sure some games will be able to but I do expect those for older titles around 2018 or older, and in most cases unity games and similar engine that is not heavily taxing on CPU/GPU and also on watt consumption.

Potato implies it can't meet minimum spec requirements or the targeted specs required to run at 720p 30/60 fps. Yes there are going to be struggles to run some newer AAA games at resolutions that gamers are used to like 1080p and 4k but lets look at the specs compared to what is a 720p console. The original xbox was capable of 720p gaming. with a 32 bit custom intel CPU running at 733 MHz, and a gpu Co developed by Nvidia and Microsoft with 20 GFlops, and 64 MBs of RAM, but that's not running PC games I hear you screaming at your monitor. Okay but my point stands you don't need massive amounts of power for 720p games when they are well optimized, and even if they aren't optimized I think we are well beyond specs needed for 720p, plus scaling tech has come a long way. so i see no problems coming.

Performance wise, you will be able to play pretty much every game on the market right now at 30fps if you lower the settings. There are however the Linux specific issues like Media foundation which prevents pre-rendered cutscenes in some games to play(e.g Nioh 2) or straight up makes other games crash on launch. There is also the fact that VKD3D(DX12-->VULKAN translation layer) is way behind DX12, leading to most new games being unplayable on launch. A good example is Far Cry 6. I could launch the game the day after it released, but there were graphical glitches, the menus did not have text unless I added a line of code to VKD3D before compiling it, and the game still crashes the AMDGPU kernel driver when I open the map screen because that screen offends VKD3D so badly in some way, that it decides to nuke my drivers. Linux gaming can be good if you know what you are doing, but it's not a click and play experience in many cases, and that makes me worry that many will just refund the deck as soon as they encounter a media foundation issue or something.

i think that it is really unfair to compare the steamdeck to a high end gaming pc. The steam deck is made for 720p in the first place. Also, Whoever buys a steamdeck thinking it is able to replace his pc for the next 2-3years of gaming, doesnt understand the niche that the steamdeck is trying to hit. It is not designed to replace your pc. It is made so you can play pc games on your couch when you do not want to sit on your desk. you trade off a high end resolution on a big screen, with the ability of sitting comfortably on your couch or even take it with you (though it might be a little to chonky for the go to play outside handheld). I would much rather compare it to a device that plays in the same ballpark, like the one x player. OR the aya neo or The gpd win. Those are devices that actually do what the steamdeck does in the same built format. (and yes im aware that the steamdeck will still fall short cause we compare a 600$ device with a 1600$ device, but at least that comparison holds some merit because we can actually see issues of those systems and what valve tries to go around those=
Im not trying to glorify the steamdeck. We are still talking about valve here, who did have a lot of issues when it comes to hardware. BUT that comparison cant hold promise until we actually have the endproduct in hand to get tests on.

get the point trying to be made, but some things are just so heavily exadurated.
Plenty of triple A games will run no problems with low settings on 60fps at native.
Cyberpunk is an example of a rediculously demanding game, it is basically at the pinacle. 95% of AAA titles don’t require the same specs.
Supposedly however it runs 20-30fps on high settings on native, so somehow on low I dont think you will need to go to 900x600p to get 30fps.
Their will be plently of triple A that can reach 60fps on medium-high settings without issue.
The issue is not the cpu or gpu,
it will come down to the power draw of the device required to do so, modifying the 15w tdp to something greater is going to mean the portable game time will be non existant.

This is why the Deck (like any other PC) supports multi-booting OSes & allows you to run full blown Windows 10 - so for games that won't run on SteamOS (via Linux support or Proton) you can install straight up Windows for those games.
And just like a PC ("It's a PC") you can boot right back into SteamOS too.
You can even make a microSD that boots into a retroOS (eg EmulationStation) strictly for emulating old games.
Take a MSi/ROG gaming laptop, make it smaller, portable & *HANDheld* (lot of people miss that last point), and *significantly cheaper* (a decent gaming laptop is $1000+), and you got the Steam Deck. Plus none of this is locked down; Valve allows their users to do this out of the box with no restrictions (unlike Nintendo)

So the only option that is left for many people is the steam deck and cloud gaming. Cloud gaming sucks ass (although Geforece Now is looking better every day but still a very small game library). What matters is developer support to get games running on Deck. Then you go on to compare it to a full desktop GPU which is just silly. The Deck and a desktop pc are trying to achieve very different outputs. The Deck won’t need to produce the same graphical features, resolution or frame rates as expected from something like a 6800XT. Good job making a controversial video to garner views and angry valve fan boy response like me though.

You're ignoring the possibility to dual boot Windows though. Valve themselves are saying you're free to install 3rd party operating systems on their site. With the 64 gb model it might be a stretch but my future 256gig deck is def dual booting for some of those unsupported games/other game launchers. Apex/R6 on this is better than nothing at all, after all.
And people already mentioned this but emulation is becoming huge quick with good emulators for PS2 and WiiU/Switch. The launch library is huge on this and the best part, you already owning all of these games(as long as you're a pc gamer on steam) is a huge benefit for all these people wanting something portable.
It's too versatile of a device to dismiss it with '''linux isn't there yet'''. Not to mention your performance numbers are a bit off. There are already devices with last gen ryzen apus performing way above their weight class.

This all depends on what Sony and Microsoft do. If those giants choose to enter the handheld game device market, then the Steam Deck will likely face some tough times. Sony is starting to make moves to porting their games to PC, so they will likely end up on the Steam Deck. But they can easily craft a device of this type as well. Not sure what they are going to do. Microsoft could be an even tougher competitor, considering Game Pass, and their ability to tune Windows for a device like this. I think Microsoft is trying to make moves to head off Sony. The games that Sony have released on PC have done extremely well, and they have a huge catalog. Sony’s skill at nurturing game development is unmatched in my opinion. They are behind on cloud gaming though. That’s another wildcard. I can play modern games at high quality in GeForce Now on a mobile phone, tablet, old laptop, computer, etc.. I also get the feeling that Apple is shifting gears towards more powerful game implementations, they have highly optimized mobile OS, and their audience is colossal. Ive played Yakuza 0, GTA V, LA Noire, Kingdom Hearts 3, and Rogues company (online) at 1080p 60fps on the Onexplayer 1195g7 and that's with intel's garbage drivers. I get this isnt a powerhouse but its not the piece of crap youre painting it out to be. And you brought up the switch lol. The dock has 0 hardware in it. All of the lifting is done by the switch. This is better than the switch.

Yeah, and the switch's games have mobile game levels of graphics. LA Noire, GTA V, Yakuza etc. are not demanding at all and LA Noire and GTA V are really old, so of course they will run alright. When I'm talking about AAA games, I mean one that were released recently or ones that will release after the release date of the switch. Good lock playing a big budget 2022 AAA game at 1080p(native) at 60fps on the steam deck.

I have made it a few minutes into your video and did you even bother researching other gaming pc handhelds?
First, I don't get why you compared a handheld to a whole gaming pc, where the GPU you mentioned (6800xt) is the size of the console itself, but even this aside.
Other handheld pc consoles (onexplayer, aya neo, gpd win 3), all running hardware which is slower than the steam deck (ryzen 4500u,intel 1165g7, ddr4... compared to steam deck's rdna2 ddr5), can run games at 720p/800p at 30+ fps so I don't get why you think the steam deck is so weak that it needs to upscale from 900x640 or whatever, even if running linux is that much slower which I doubt it.
I am not too familiar with proton or gaming on linux but valve has a verified system so it would make sense that games that are verified to work on the deck would just work out of the box, in that sense the user wouldn't have to configure anything, unless they decide to play a unverified game. How many games would be verified on launch, we will see.
Some points I do agree, this thing won't run most AAA games at 60 fps (FSR would help but yea don't expect 60 fps on all AAA) , and that it is indeed a handheld so don't expect it to run like a console.
The fact that it won't run future AAA games imo is not a deal breaker to me at least. 1 of the selling points of the steam deck is that it is a pc and if you game on a pc already, you already have the games. If it became a specific console, the likely approach is that games would have to be bought separately. I'm not sure greedy publishers would want to make and optimise games for the steam deck if they couldn't sell it separately unless valve gives them money to optimise it and so that if people bought the game on pc, they would own the deck optimised version.
either way I can't pre order this thing in my region but I do plan to get it.

      1. The 6800XT compute performance is a good reference point. Take the 6800XT performance in game X, and provided that game is fully GPU limited in both the Deck and the Desktop's case, then dividing 6800XT performance by 13 will roughly give you the deck's performance. I made this point for the people who are thinking of connecting their deck to a TV or monitor, similar to how people "dock" their Nintendo Switch. I want to warn people that using the deck is a bad idea. The Deck is 100% a handheld.
      2. Future games will be more demanding, so you will need FSR upscaling. In 2 years the deck will struggle a lot, and it will probably need a "very low" graphics setting in big budget AAA games, since those tend to be super demanding.
      3. People want to play games in their library, the whole "this game works, but this one doesn't" thing might be a dealbreaker for some people, and I want them to be aware that not every game will work properly out of the box under proton, or at all because I've been using it for over 2 years and I know how much of pain it can be sometimes.
Depending on the use case, the deck can do a wonderful job, but I just want the people whoa are raving about the deck bringing with it things like Proton being able to run every single steam game OTB by the time the deck releases, and the deck somehow making all game devs to enable Proton anti-cheat support to calm down, it won't happen like that, it's unrealistic. Give it another 2 years and maybe, just maybe, Linux gaming will more or less catch up to Windows, but the deck is not a miracle machine, and we are going to have to deal with all these problems for some time still.

@@doompenguin7453 I understand you are keeping expectations realistic for those who do not know much about consoles and tech and just stumbles upon the steam deck and reserves one.
Guess we will have to just wait and see how it does. I would probably just install windows on it anyway if I do manage to get one in asia.

You're probably right. If I ever did get this thing though, I would probably be using it to play older games like Terraria, TF2, and... MAYBE GMOD?!? I feel like that last one might break the poor thing. I think it would be cool to run a document program for writing on this thing for my story projects. But iounno, device is making some chances look a little slim.

I think people are underestimating the power of this thing. Look at benchmarks on the onexplayer and the AYA Neo. Those are very capable of playing modern games. There are benchmarks of GTAV running at 1600p high settings on the onexplayer and it STILL hits past 30fps. And the stream deck has better specs than both of these devices overall, apart from screen resolution on the onexplayer. I have no doubt that it can play all three of the games you mentioned at high settings 60fps.

I play competitive games like Quake champions, quake live, Counterstrike successful with 60fps and with the steam controller. Ok 30 FPS would be to low for me but 60 is totally fine for many competitive "older" games.

Despite being an overly negative video I agree with the most parts.
I think it can handle AAA games even at native res but only with low settings and 30ish fps.
That in and of itself sounds fine to me but if you also consider the battery life on high loads you will not have a good experience.
I doubt that we will see a lot of anti cheat support through a compatibility layer as well since that's just way too much effort for what it's worth.
Linux will also filter out non tech savvy users pretty quick especially if you're used to console gaming.
It's still a great piece of hardware for the price. You just need to be realistic what you wanna do with it.
I'll use it for emulation (up to PS2), light gaming and reading visual novels and I'm sure it will do all just fine.

The 6800XT and the deck's GPU have the same architecture, so it's easy to compare. You can get the benchmark numbers for a 6800XT, divide by 13, and get a good approximation for the deck's performance.

@@doompenguin7453 That's estimating the relative power of the Deck, but comparing $400 hardware in a handheld form factor to full desktop parts is neither fair nor productive. It's obvious to everyone that the Deck is basically a decent laptop best suited to indie games and older AAAs, but I doubt there are many people even purchasing it as their main way to experience graphically demanding games to begin with.

At this point Valve will not manage to get at least one of the big titles before the lunch of Steam Deck. Look at the proton updates there aren't too many lately... If not even one of the big games (Apex Legends,Fortnite,Rainbow six siege,etc..) will not be available to play on day 1 of the launch of Steam Deck then i incline to agree with you.
