Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth star in Academy Award-winning mastermind George Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” the much-anticipated return to the iconic dystopian world he created more than 30 years ago with the seminal “Mad Max” films. Miller now turns the page again with an all-new original, standalone action adventure that will reveal the origins of the powerhouse character from the multiple Oscar-winning global smash “Mad Max: Fury Road.” The new feature from Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures is produced by Miller and his longtime partner, Oscar-nominated producer Doug Mitchell (“Mad Max: Fury Road,” “Babe”), under their Australian-based Kennedy Miller Mitchell banner. As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. I think low expectations both got this movie praise and also made it fail. Not many were really interested in a Furiosa movie so it failed to draw a large crowd. Others went in with low expectations. I was among the latter, and from the trailers my main issue had been the fact that a lot of the action looked overly green-screened and seemed to use excessive VFX that didn't look realistic. But that wasn't the case in the actual movie. I mean, it still had a lot more moments than Fury Road that weren't as well done, but they were far fewer than the trailers had suggested. And it's a good thing, too, because story wise it didn't really do anything captivating.

I was one of those people that thought "there is no need for a Furiosa prequel", but then I learned that the script was written at the same time as Fury Road and thats when I decided to give the movie a chance. I wish more people knew that information. I also never saw an ad or a trailer for it until it had been out for 3 weeks! I had to scramble and go to a bigger city to see it before it was out of theatures since my local one had stopped showing it the week before. I am so glad it was not a mary sure movie and was actually amazing!
if I had to grade the movie, I would say solid A- film 93%. Fury Road is just hard to beat at 105%. If this had been released prepandemic, it would have crushed theatures.

Fury Road isn’t a masterpiece. It’s a good-looking movie that’s entirely plot-driven while having such a terrible plot (they go somewhere only to turn right back around and go back home).
Furiosa, on the other hand, is much more character-driven, but also has a great plot that runs into and improves Fury Road (title character is _shown_ being taken from her home and spends nearly two movies trying to get back, while also being shaped by her environment and the other characters in it). Furiosa is the better of the two movies and will likely be viewed as the masterpiece that it is one day down the road.

There is also just a lot of thought put into the mechanics of wasteland road warfare. It's not just cars ramming into each other and people shooting each other or throwing bombs at each other. They develop special tactics and tools, and they use the terrain to their advantage. People use the sand dunes to break line of sight against shooters. They throw up dust to create cover. They tar the road to hide the movement of large groups. They adapt salvaged materials to build specialized machines for road war. They try to capture enemy vehicles when they can.

the biggest mistake action movies always make is trying to surprise you.
the audience doesn't want someone off screen to save the hero at the last second and they don't want to watch a thousand shaky cuts that make a 60yo look like they can still fight. they want to know what is happening at all times. If you show who is going to swoop in at the last second to save the hero and why, then you make your over the top fight scene that much more believable and can get away with surviving more impossible situations.

Its the age old story with Mad Max as a franchise: it doesn't get any recognition at its time of release but becomes a cult classic over time. So few people even saw the original Mad Max that when the sequel came out, they just called "Road Warrior" in some countries.
Now I personally think Fury Road and Furiosa are probably the best entries in the franchise. Her story is far more compelling that Mad Max (who really is only "mad" for about 10 minutes of the first movie and there's one great chase sequence at the beginning, with the interceptors and Night Ranger) and Fury Road is essentially, Road Warrior but better. But I'm nearly 50 years old and recognise Mad Max as a thing because of the 80s movies. There's 30 years before Mad Max 3 and Fury Road!
I would have thought that Fury Road would have been enough to kickstart Furiosa as a new franchise (and this film was really well done) but it wasn't.
Cinema attendance is down overall and the only things people seem interested in going to see are second rate horror movies on date night, kids films and spectacle movies in IMAX (Dune 2).

And the way there are people dying left and right from each side until there were only two people left was so satisfying. The movie was great.

"Fury Road" is in a class of its own. But "Furiousa" was also a great action movie. Give one an "A+", the other an "A/A-". What is so sad is that neither was the blockbuster they deserved to be, with "Furiousa" being ignored, for some reason. I think a lot of guys (the main audience) were thinking they were going to get another generic, "strong female character" movie. Instead, as with Sarah Conner in both "Terminator" movies, or even Ripley in "Alien/Aliens", they were fully formed characters. And the female leads changed significantly from one movie to the next. As you noted, this was an earned journey to becoming a hero. When I went to see "Furiousa", I was literally the only person in the theater. Meanwhile, "Barbie" made over a billion dollars. And a great series comes to an undeserved end, while we can all expect a slew of toy related movies, and "Barbie 2". Ugh.

My favourite parts about it are things like the story being more of a central point, because it has really fleshed out the world, something that is a bit hard if your movie is just one long car chase over only a few days. I honestly want to see much more, so it is a bit sad that its underperformance means another mad max film might not happen, but mad max was brought back once, and it can be brought back again.
