Check out The Alpinist, one of the greatest climbing documentaries ever made and its made based on one of the craziest climbers to exist and push the boundaries of climbing, Marc Andre
Speaking from the 34 min mark. Alex says a big impact on him was seeing the landscapes and how we've lost so much to humans tearing down nature. I'm a cyclist and I talk all the time about how we see things so much different from the bike. Sometimes it does feel like we a losing nature to concrete. Great interview!!! Love Alex!
I’m a trail runner from the Netherlands and I feel the same way. There is no untouched part of our country. People say it’s pointless to protect nature, or to introduce wolves for instance, because there is “no room for it in our small country”. Basically, they say there is no nature left to protect, so to see “real wild nature” you have to travel abroad. That’s nonsense, we have dunes, marshes, lakes, rivers, forests and lots of grasslands. The people are doing great, but nature is suffering. If people would get out more, they would see and understand and care about it a bit more…
@@SanderBessels That is so sad. Never been to the Netherlands, but I have watched a lot of docs that speak about there. It's such beautiful country. It feels like those who care are scrambling to pick up the pieces to put it all back together. My is a volunteer for the conservation dept in the state we live in. Fortunately we have an amazing conservation dept here, but we are one of only a few in the nation. I hope the officials there in Netherlands pull their heads out their butts and realize what they are losing....I hope that for all countries. "you don't know what you've got till it's gone" as they say.....
what a great podcast/interview. Love the openness and frankness of Alex. A real guy with real life issues and he takes them head on. Love his humor and honesty. Very informative. thanks for putting this together. Definitely looking forward to Thursday to see the new adventure.
I love the access to Alex and his thoughts that we are getting in this phase of his career as a podcaster and media personality. He’s such an interesting guy
LOVED this interview. Even though he spends so much time at altitude, Alex shows how down to earth he is! I met his mom this year at a writer's event and she is her own kind of amazing. Thanks Rich and Team
Too good, the amount of stuff Alex says 'I think that's stupid' 😂 Knows what he does/doesn't like, unapolagetic. Always a great chat when's he's on, thank you RR 👍
I’m so relieved to hear Alex share his thoughts on the land and how it’s been so heavily logged and pillaged by man..and how the film ended up being great, about two buddies on this epic trip…vs given any attention to this topic. I loved the film but felt it ended almost too soon. Sadly I guess that’s how these things go with editing and production and in the end they need to sell a film. I was hungry for more of the landscape and depth I knew they must’ve felt when traveling thru the American West and up into Alaska. Hopefully Alex and Tommy and anyone else in this community can merge their love for climbing and the outdoors to shed light and awareness on what’s happening to our beautiful country, the adverse affect it has on the local towns, the indigenous and their livelihood. Bravo for another beautiful episode Rich. 🩵
Comfortable with the world outside you and inside you.. literally the best parenting advice I ever heard! Would love a episode that goes deep into this Rich!! Or maybe you just talking deep about this for 30 minutes 😂🙏❤️
I watched free solo the night before i drove into yosemite valley. Absolutely bonkers to stand infront of el captian and think that somebody climbed this thing without a rope.
At the same time his sensativity is very high! He needs his few and that is it! I remember him saying, "the climbing partners come and go". He found his way!
Nothing beats seeing one of your idols doing their sport at a place you are also doing your sport. This is what happened a couple weeks ago climbing near Alex. It’s as good as it gets. It would be like playing basketball on a court next to LaBron. 🧡
Good afternoon Rich and Alex Sharing of your Free Solo adventure and the like was awe inspiring stuff. Cinematically awesome. Truly brilliant. Again, thank you. 💜
Great interview. Real insight to what Alex is passionate about.I live in the Redwoods of Northern California, which is a temperate Rainforest. Most Americans have heard of the logging going on in the Brazilian Rainforest, but have no idea of the amount of commercial logging in the Tongas Naional Forest;in Southeast Alaskan
terrific interview. i am glad honnold is getting out there to do day shots in red rocks, wandering around, climbing, exploring. the contrast to the national geo "adventure" is startling, and i can't help think that he and caldwell don't spend time thinking, "helicopters, drones, support crew . . . what the hell are we doing here?"
I'd say Alex free soloing El Cap was the greatest athletic achievement in history. When you really think about it, nothing compares not even what Micheal Phelps did because of the risk of dying over one little mistake. A slip, a bird distracting him, anything. One little mistake and it's over.
Everyone thinks the top of their favorite sport is the greatest athlete ever. I won't deny that free solo was monumental but this general sweeping claim that it is the greatest athletic accomplishment in history is impossible to say. Just because he had a larger risk or death doesn't make it harder to do.
@@TheBackyardAdventurerThe mental toughness required to free solo thousands of feet from the ground is insane. That in itself is why it was so amazing.
@@RyanRoberts-kw2ik Amazing, yes, but the greatest athletic achievement in history is very debatable. In 1974 Philippe Petit completed one of his many a high wire stunts over a thousand feet above the ground, just as dangerous and just as much talent needed. Every sport has their own greatest athletic achievement in history and no one can really say theirs was better than the other because it is impossible to make those comparisons.
When he said “when I’m out on trails with my 2.5 yr old daughter and I get way ahead or behind and I can’t see her for a bit I’m ok with that” every parent listening got a little sick to their stomach lol. Bro is a legend:) also “why not just drive so we can climb more” ha ha
I didn't realise that any other profession had people saying that they were going to do that once, as much as when I tell people I was in the army. 😂😂😂. The most annoying thing in the world. Loved this show can't wait for Thursday now, definitely watching the doc with my daughter.
I´m a big fan of Alex as a climber and general attitude about life, but I found little disappointing how he answered the question about his own environmental footprint. As if by not buying clothes with money (but with his work) is less impactful and like by driving a electric car takes totally fine, not speaking about travelling and the all social media impact...
It’s funny how Alex rationalizes and minimizes the whole amygdala thing. He doesn’t seem to realize (or accept) that his low/no amygdala function correlates with a specific demographic. He seems to ignore the “nature” part of the nature of/ nurture equation. And conveniently ignores the actual science on low / no amygdala function.
1:44 - Rich, have you ever tried Xero Shoes? What are your thoughts? I've been walking and running on them pretty much exclusively for about 5 years now and really love them. Have you tried other zero drop shoes?
I wish it would’ve been an environmental film bc then it would actually have said something as a film. The climbing was boring and not that difficult and so much of the bike trip was cut out.
Lord Jesus you keep me encouraged please hear my prayers being a single mother with two special needs children is overwhelming and challenging. I’m desperately trying to provide for them. Lord give me strength as I continue to struggle to buy groceries and as I struggle to pay bills. I keep faith because I know God will change my situation. Faith over fear!💕
Alex is an amazing athlete and I love following his adventures. I gotta say though when he gets on his human exploitation rants it comes off as anti human. Logging is ok, fishing is ok, we are a part of the earth and we are supposed to use its resources. Sure there have been some greedy bad apples and bad practices through out history but we are not killing our planet. Remember everything we’ve created has come from this earth.
58:23 being comfortable with the world around you is lacking with a lot of Americans these days. The bogeyman is around ever corner and a certain politician is projecting his fears on the fools following his lead.
I face palming 🤦♀️ that he’s still trying to invalidate brain research and findings and dismiss reality. He still explains away his amygdala function / non function. Experts in this field are pretty aware how to read brain scans and function and all of the studies and research. His “logic” is actually confirmation bias. I wish interviewers would nail this down with people who actually study and research this at the highest level. But I get it, it’s in direct conflict with the “wholesome” brand image. I’m a huge fan of AH, but/and, his significant (smug) dismissal of the entire amygdala finding is just a symptom of this specific brain issue (and diagnosis).
Thanks for watching! Check out my favorite running shoes, apparel, & more 👉🏾bit.ly/on2024
