My favorite thing about your videos is when you play a riff you've obviously played a thousand times before, yet you still laugh out loud at how ridiculously cool it is. Perfectly encapsulates the magic of that band.

I guess many of us could debate how great a musician Paul was in the 60's but I'd have to say he was one of the greatest in everything he did from singing, to his awesome bass playing, to his songwriting and guitar work. He also kept the Beatles together cranking out hits long after they were all millionaires and would have been just as happy to have called it quits. He was the most dedicated to the Beatles and always seemed to be enjoying the music the most when they performed.

    • @MPfrance

You just popped up on my side screen. Had no idea what you were going to be doing in respect to the Beatles. The first that struck me was your enthusiasm and heartfelt joy, in playing Paul's solos. That is possibly the most important thing, in respect to music. PASSION ! You have it in spades ,everything else is academic.
I live in SF, but have recorded several sessions in Nashville. I'll never forget the first time. I had foolishly thought the session players would be three or four chord players etc. I only knew Nashville from country stereotyping. So, we go in the studio on my first visit ( Fireside , now long gone ) . I write with a lot of chord changes and inversions have to correct. So the musical director writes out a Nashville chart for the others . ( You'll have to explain to everyone someday )
So before the session to loosen up with the other players, I asked them, what can we play that we might all know.
I suggested a Beatles tune, which I know all the parts to,never thinking these guys would either appreciate or know any of the songs .
    I COULDN'T HAVE BEEN MORE WRONG !
    " OK, which one "?
    Come again ...
It was a blast. We must have run through six tunes in half an hour . All in the right keys, all knew the right changes and drummer knew all Rings fills etc.
    I applaud you.
    It's infectious.
    You get it.
    You feel it.
    Kudos my friend .
You're doing a great service for young players , that may have not been aware of how great and inspired this band was.
" Blackbird " I get where Paul is coming from.
Inspiration, but not necessarily stealing :)
I too have met him,and have spent quite a bit of time with him years ago.
The most humble person I've ever met.
When I hear Beyoncé or any of the other young poseurs saying how great they ( about themselves ) it's a joke. Sorry ,you don't write, produce, score, sing your own harmonies, play an instrument etc.
    Keep it up Mike.
It was a joy watching you ,and your licks were spot on.

Fantastic rundown of Paul's work and to think of the staggering volume of material produced in only 6-7 years! According to Ian Macdonald's book Revolution in the Head, McCartney wrote "Let It Be" and "The Long and Winding Road" on the same day. (Geeesh, some hope for two hits like that in a life time!!)
Here is a quote of beloved John..... when Paul performed a beautiful solo version of Yesterday, John came back on stage afterward and said, “Thank you Ringo. That was wonderful.”

Fantastic study, Mike! The whole series has been a joy and I was pleased to see one for McCartney's guitar work as well. I've actually always wondered who wrote and played that descending guitar melody in Back To The USSR (during the chorus). To me, sometimes Paul's and George's styles overlap and I'm unsure who is doing what and who possibly came up with what. I love it all, no matter who it came from, but I find myself curious about it. Anyway, I really love what you've presented, from a shared love of their genius work, as well as due to your talent and insight in delving into these pieces. Thank you!

What I most appreciate about Mike, is that it takes a guitarist of his skill set, to understand the magnitude of the Beatle's composition ability, along with their musicianship, in being the greatest rock band in history. I'm a fan of many different bands, but I can only say that for sure, the Beatles will be remembered, and relevant, a hundred years from now.

Paul plays the lead in George Harrison's "Taxman" . It's the 1st trac from Revolver and he shreds on this ..A guitar solo ahead of its time ...Also on another Harrison trac "Think For Yourself " Paul plays a smoking bass line on a Fuzz bass that really makes the trac..The facts are , Paul McCartney is the musical genius of our time and adding Lennon/ Harrison to the mix itwas beyond magical .. It is absolutely mind blowing the amount amazing, ingenious and quality music that the Beatles created and recorded during the time they were together ..In just 8 years they released 12 albums ...one being a double (White album) and wrote and recorded 409 tracs a small handful of covers mostly sung by Ringo. Also starred in 2 movies Hard Days Night and Help ...Yellow Submarine and Magical Mystery Tour short films A cartoon series 2or 3 huge world tours the let it b documentary Many television appearances ALL IN 8 YEARS!! Some artists today release only 1 or 2 pathetic CD's in that time

Paul's bass line is OUTSTANDING!! It already implies everything else they'd eventually put on the record. Just SO fabulous for a pop/bassist who was just 25 years old at the time! And there are SO many other examples of Paul's brilliance on bass. Mindblowing.

In the early 70s I had to learn the solo to Maybe I'm Amazed from a cassette tape I made from taping a transistor radio, and guessing how to finger it, and even what key the song is in (the chord harmony is very interesting) of course it's not quite right, but one of my favorite solos of all time.

I attended a wedding in a cornfield in Iowa, just up the road from my uncle's farm, when I was only a little shaver, circa '69(?) Where the groom (who was just back from his tour in Nam), knelt down on one knee with a cheap acoustic guitar and sang this song to his soon to be bride. I remember she sobbed like a baby. Even at only 9 years of age thought it was the coolest thing ever.

A lot of respect to most people who learned playing instruments by just listening to it. Most of the generation now a days just download chords or tabs and not really learning much about playing but rather for the sake that they can just play the song and pretty much they just depend on it.. but if you can listen and get to play it, that is just awesome!

    • @Writer538
      @Writer538 6 лет назад

Mike, don't you think there are two kinds or meanings of "learned it by ear"? Many or most people, I think, believe it to include learning even the chords by ear. Others assume one knows chords and just mean that someone figured out which chords (and right hand work) to use where.

I was10 when the Beatles were on the Ed Sullivan Show . All of my friends were trying to find someone that had a TV so we could watch the show. Back in those days you were considered rich if you owned a TV . Lucky for me my grandparents had a TV and let my sister and I watch the show. All of the kids from school were so excited it was all every kid could talk about that Coming Sunday Night . You have to understand THE BEATLES we're ours as kids that was our music not our parents crap we had to listen to. It was an exciting time . I am now 64 and still listen to their music to this day that brings me back to that time .I still consider THE BEATLES as my music that was a gift given to me as a child . Nothing will ever come close to the phenomenon they brought to the World. I myself consider myself very lucky to have lived in this time of THE BEATLES

My mom loved them, too, but my dad said that their haircuts were shameful. Ha. I remember that he never said their music was bad, just the long hair and the girls' screaming. I remember the excitement to this day. I, too, am proud that I was part of the Beatles phenomenon. Nothing will ever match them. They truly were a gift to our generation. The Beatles have set the musical bar for me and everything else pales in comparison. I still listen to them today. I play Beatles songs for my little grandchild in hopes that she may enjoy them as much as I have.

The bottom line is: Paul is such a genius, able to play, to make wonderful, divine, out of this world, music, with anything, any instrument you put in front of him.
The man does not only plays, or creates, music. He´s not just a musician. Macca is LIVING, WALKING, MUSIC!!! "... miles above..." (as sung in "Helter Skelter") anyone else - maybe except for LVBeethoven and WA Mozart. Paul is, indeed, the Mozart/Beethoven of our times! And this is probably under-rating him...

Hi Mike, Awesome video. Thanks! Yes, Paul is to be appreciated on every level. Was always amazed to hear it was him playing the solo on Taxman. Right, Paul was originally a guitar player in the band and most people probably don't realize he took up the bass after Stu's untimely death, as John and George weren't about to put their guitars down. So, Paul was working in partnership in a big way, with being so flexible. My favorite song with Paul on Bass is George's "Something" that is one beautiful melodic bass line he laid down there. Great playing Mike, thank you!

Thank you for this video! Your Midtown is awesome and you play great. I always thought George played a lot of those licks, but speaking of Paul, would you please do a video on "You Never Give Me Your Money?" That song is an underrated epic that seems to tell the Beatles' story as a band.

Mike, i find your videos extremely enlightening, educational and very relaxing while being equally exhilarating. We are very like minded in our approach: i analyze & discect about the feeling and emotion of notes and sounds seemingly noone else around me hears, and you brilliantly explain WHY & HOW. I will be in Nashville in October for a meering with some you may know..(nows not the time or place) and you can count on me looking you up! Thank you very the GREAT videos! Sincerely,
    Chris Harding

Paul's guitar skills have become gradually visible over the years. His input with the Beatles music went way beyond bass as Geoff Emerick made clear in his book.

Hi Mike. Very impressed. Someone on the net who actually teaches stuff the right way.
Frustrates me how many players put up lessons & tabs that are so obviously in the wrong key or position. Although I could already play all the tunes u showed - I still found it inspiring.
Thank you & keep it up. (Subscribed btw)

That good morning solo is insane. Listening to it on the album, it just oozes McCartney and Taxman. I would be interested to know if those bizarre raga like hammer on pull offs came from george and his sitar playing or whether McCartney's ear was just positioned that way. Either way, one of the best solos in history and completely overlooked sadly.

Mike, thanks for these presentations on the guitar work of the Beatles. In the '60's it was hard to tell who did what on Beatles albums. We craved any bit of info on the lads. In 67 at an eighth grade party all we could do was play Sgt. Pepper LP over and over. All of us were speechless. Your work here ties up some loose strings in the ongoingness of Beatle fandom.!

Mike I totally love watching the joy in your face loving the guitar solos of Paul McCartney, cuz I feel the exact same thing about the genius of what they did. They were just amazing...thanks for the lesson and showing us the amazing things they came up with. Breaking them down is very cool. Obvious you were and still are a great fan! I'm still w ya too.

I could watch these about John's, Paul's and George's playing for a much longer time. They have amazed me since '64 when I was 9 - made me into a musician. Always frustrated by trick 60's camera work that made it impossible to see what and how guitarists played. More please!

Hi Mike. Great playing and explaining about Paul's guitar work. Growing up in the 1960's, we had No extra information about the Beatles. It was so very controlled. Now, there is So much info about them available. I'm so glad to hear your info on some songs Paul played great guitar solos on.!! Thanks, keep it going.!

Your in-depth knowledge of the social history, as well as the musical history of the Beatles, is encyclopedic. As a 12-year-old watching the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show I was amazed and captured by the harmonic sound of the Beatles. Listening to you explain the musical basis of his music, I am "amazed" that he was so gifted at such an early age; especially since they were breaking new ground with every recording. Thanks for all your effort and your playing is expert. I have contracted MS and cannot play anymore, so learning about the back-story of the songs will have to do, and you do it well.
