    You had your rod and reel backwards while reeling in. He was using like a Surf casting rod. Also If Bradon is a lefty some reels are built for lefties and some can be universal and switched to be used by lefties. Good luck on your fishing and nice Mahi.

    SO funny that you guys were telling each other you didn't know what to do about the fish on! THROTTLE BACK!!! Thats why sportfish back down on fish, it makes it so much easier to reel them in and land the fish. Gad you landed it! ENJOY!!!

      pull back way back then LOWER POLE REALLY QUICK WHILE REELING IN REALLY QUICK... you prolly should practice that a little bit... and get a harness... do you have a rock climbing or kite harness??? or at LEAST the safety harness for rough seas..... HOOK SELF TO BOAT even if the ROD is not hooked to boat... THEN DEAL WITH FISHIE.... BUT..... you really don't want fishy to yank pole into water, you REALLY REALLY don't want fishie to yank both POLE *AND* YOU into water either!!!
      but yes... tell buddy boat on radio ""FISH ON THROTTLING BACK"" and ''SEA KEEP'' or barely go forward on current till you get the fish nearER to back of boat... then neutral WITH ANNOUNCMENT ON RADIO or with HORNS or wutever signaling a STOPPPING NOW action....... anyhow ANNOUNCE YOUR INTENT so they ain't mind reading ;) ;) winkwinknudgenudge

    Another idea on the fishing Rod debacle. (Just what you need) Keep the reel dump the rod. Next time your near a big US city, stop in a big fishing store or Amazon order a salt water rod, instead of a rod with stagnant guides buy one with roller (guides) This allows a righty’s or lefties to use the same rod. Ps I’m righty and have always reeled with my right hand. I’m not ambidextrous my left hand/arm have more than enough strength. Fishing used to fun, I enjoyed it because of the piece of mind or break from other things going on in my life, I didn’t recognize how calming it was for years.

    Last time I saw Chub Cay was early 2000's, it is nice to see places I have been as they are currently. I never caught anything fishing on the banks except Barracuda. Bahamian's will eat them, I won't, though it would probably be safe on the banks. Tuna in the gulf stream is a definite possibility.

    I like the comment below about what u need to do regarding your fishing technique. There's also a lot of videos on RUclips u can watch on how to reel em in. Another fun thing would be to do a collaboration with a RUclips fishing channel...they could show u the ropes, maybe critique your video (it would be priceless) and u would get some great content out of it.

    Braden, as some others have said, get a reel setup for a southpaw, that'll help loads. Another technique is "pump and reel", raise the tip of the rod without reeling in, then reel in _FAST_ as you lower the tip back down. Number 3 on the fishing, drop the boat back down to an idle when you're reeling in a big one like that Mahi!
    I _think_ Adventures Of A Lifetime on "Encore" was a bit ahead of you on that crossing, that's if that partially sunken boat is the same one they had on a recent video. It looked like some people (hopefully the owners) were salvaging (scavenging) everything off of it when they went by.

You know what they say, "give a man some fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in the boat all day drinkin' beer." Congrats on the Mahi....it's a beauty.

  • @neuvella
    @neuvella 3 года назад +15

    Braden -- based on how you were reeling in the mahi, it looks like you're left handed. If so, the problem is that you're using a right handed reel, which is why you end up with rod and reel being turned upside down, making it difficult to reel in and adjusting the drag quite awkward. Simple fix: buy some left handed reels. Thanks for another great episode.

    Not to be 'that guy' ... but if I could offer some fishing advice; First, buy a quality belt with socket to plant that rod to fight the fish when you hook up. You can find them in any bait store. Also stop the boat to fight / land him. It makes a yuge difference in your % landing fish. An easy fix for lefty reel issue is to buy a quality large/heavy spinning reel. You want one that will handle at least 400yds of 50# Ande line... more is better. The main advantage of a spinning reel is that by design the handle is easily switchable to the left or right side so anyone can use it.
