Thank you for sharing the difference between Shangaan and Tsonga. I've often heard that it the word "Shangaan" is often used in a derogatory sense to describe people of the Tsonga clan. I know that some Tsonga people even get offended when you call them "Shangaan", do you feel this is because they feel mislabeled or is there just a negative connotation associated with being Shangaan?
There are variety of views for that but yes some find it offensive. The word itself is derived from Soshangane who was a general in the Zulu Kingdom during the the times of King Shaka. Others find it inappropriate to be used because they say it assumes the history of Tsonga people to only start in 1820s or so while there is more beyond that (similar to saying SA began in 1652 🤣), others find it offensive due to how other tribes used it against them, etc. So yes, there are many views and of course others do not have a problem with it
@@BestKhosahe was not general of Zulu ......that's why you don't know nothing .... Zulus are magebas, jama, sigujana, So soshangaan was commander of ndandwe kingdom in kwanongoma
VuTsonga is a creation of the Swiss missionaries: its a mixture of the South East coast of Africa, consisting of Rongas, Tswa, VaChopi, VaNdua, VaRozwi VuChangani is a creation of the those Ndwandwe mercenaries vaka Nxumalo, Zwide, Mkhantswa , Langa: the ngunis subjected and conquered the people of the South East coast of Africa being Rongas, Tswa, VaChopi, Ndua, Rozwi. Funny thing is the language called Shangaan is nothing like the nguni languages like Zulu, Swati etc
My family is from Mozambique south (Maputo), they speak XiRhonga wich is very very very similar to Xitsonga, the Shangane people from Gaza province in Mozambique say XiRhonga is the same as Shangane, I do not agree there’s loads of differences between both languages although the origin is the same probably.
I’m from Gaza (Mozambique), it’s called changana or xichangana. Most people from Maputo speak changana instead of ronga (it’s rare to hear someone speaking ronga which is changana with a different pronunciation).
All shanganas are Tsonga but not all Tsongas are Shanganas , true . But as a language, how do you differentiate the language that you have teach us from Shangana ? We ,in Mozambique still have Xitswa ,xirhonga , xitxopi ,xichangna etc... but there is no a singular known language as Tsonga , so i would like to understand as languages, the differences .between those 2
Tsonga and Shangaan is one tribe there is no difference.Tsonga means Junior and Changani is the name formed when the Nguni and the AmaThonga joined into one nation.
Tonga means ...to rule... Tonga or Tsonga are found in Zambia Congo Zimbabwe Mozambique South Africa. They are the first wave of so called 'Bantu' migrants from Sudan Egypt who inhabited Southern Africa thousands of years before anyone else except the so called 'Bushmen'. Shangaan are recent group from 1800s not more than 200 years old.
Is it shangaan or Changani? Because I first heard the word "Shangaan "in guateng from other tribes accents.like zulu and other tribes most found in guateng. Xhosa, Sotho etc
Changane is the Moçambican Portuguese spelling of Shangaan. In southern Moçambique, the language is called xitchangane and is widely used. But there are other languages further north.
Although some of the Tsonga deny that they are Changana well it is their choice but the majority who speak this language they do not believe being Changana means they were conguared. That is wrong no one imposed himself on Changana. The Changana tribe was legally formed by both the Nguni and the Thonga or Tsonga.Remember the situation that time there was war.The Nguni led by Soshangana had their land taken away by Chaka and the Zulu warriors.Since the Soshangana had no other option he then incorparted the Tsonga into his war effort so that he would be able to defend himself against Chaka warriors. The formation of Changana was held at Chaimiti in the Limpopo Tsonga area. All Tsonga who joined Soshangana became Changana and this is their official tribal name in Mozambique and Zimbabwe. In Zambia some are called Tonga and others are called Ntsenga. In Malawi they are called the Ngoni tribe even inTanzania. In Matebeleland the western area of zimbabwe those who joined Mzilikazi are known as Ndebele. There is no difference between the Tsonga and the Zulu. The Tsonga were the ones who invented fire.that is why the majority are called Chauke.I do not know why a group of Tsonga along Limpopo deny that they are Changani while the majority accept it.
It is out of hatred towards the Zulu people, these groups of people who are calling themselves as the so called Tsongas especially from Giyani are the ones who are pushing that stupid ideology. The only hatred when you listen to them is that King Manukosi Gaza Nxumalo (Soshangana) has committed atrocities towards their forefathers during the time when they were invading, fighting capturing and wars. You can't say you don't want to be associated with the king who have conquered your forefathers or ancestors, they were beaten those people even if they could say they their chiefs like Njakanjaka and Manungu never fought and defeated their chieftaincy but they remain chiefs and not the Kings they don't have kingdom. They have agreed to surrender their powers under the kingdom of King Soshangane. The issue of Tonga or Tsongas trace back to Kwa-Nongoma in KZN and all over SADC that is why our totem names and surnames are similar and full of Nguni praises called izithakazelo or swithlokovetselo. They are lots of surnames that were changed along the way as they were running for fear of not to sound like Nguni in them. If you run away from the King it means you have been defeated unless you come back to fight that king and win that battle so that you can retain that kingdom of that nation you have conquered. Shaka Zulu was doing all distasteful atrocities on his people but he remains their king. Why when it comes to us the Vatsonga-Machangana we are ditching out Soshangane because he did the same things that Shaka has done to his people? Who is the Tsonga King and where is his Kingdom? There is no human being on earth who doesn't have a king and Kingdom. If you refuse to have king on earth, you will also refuse to God as your King and kingdoms has been created by God and they were taking kingdoms by force, atrocities and killing of people. Let these people just accept that we are one, in KZN we are Tonga or Amathonga, in SADC we are also called Tonga and in Mozambique Rhonga, Tonga Bitonga, Gintonga, Tsonga, Machangana and in South Africa we are Vatsonga-Machangana and we are one thing. Boarrying topic and refusal to accept history. 🤔🥱😔🤣
The above contribution which attempts to clear the difference between Tsonga and Changana is true and sensible.I do not agree with the word Tsonga myself because it means junior and you know very if you are being treated as inferior and you accept it means there is something wrong with you. This word or name was imposed on us by Whites .It was their way of devide and rule which I think many people are not aware of Ours is Thonga or Amathonga not Tsonga. The name Thonga shows our authority and by accepting the name Tsonga we are saying we have no authorite we are a defeated nation.Lets not curse ourselves guys wake up. I’m happy that you have highlighted one important issue: Tsongas are not Shangans.
Tsonga people were under Shosangane, they are therefore Shangaan
I want to learn shangaan, can we get shangaan lessons ,they seem to be unavailable ,pple seem to be publishing tsonga material only
I'm Tonga from Zambia. It seems we have been around for some time.
Tonga are descendents of thonga the same group tsongas come from.
