It gives a whole new feeling of being a real LC citizen. As a side note, there is a mod named LCUrbanEnhancements that lets you ride busses and some lines connect the train stations. I once tried to finish GTA IV by mainly using the subway (by "mainly" I mean using It to go to missions and such, even some hang outs, only using cars occasionally) and It's actually usable, this is (sort of) walkable city (when we use the "skip trip" function), It kinda made me feel like when I first moved into my city I currently live in and had to learn the bus routes and I indeed learned the train routes like I learned the bus route over here. Thought about doing the same in GTA V, but It didn't took me that long to give up on that idea, which is very fitting since It's Los Angeles, perhaps one of the least walkable cities in this planet. Edit: missed opportunity in not showing the station next to United Liberty Paper/IAA front building in Times Square (always forgot the fictional name). It's quite unique and very pretty with a whole connection that binds two different stations underground right bellow one of the main avenues.
@@TheTransitDiaries Not at all, like I said, It's actually really well thought out, almost every mission have access to the subway with exception of the start of Bohan (trains there come from Algonquin which is still locked) and Alderney (no metro). Gotta say, completing the game like that really made me appreciate the amount of effort the devs put in, trains really just works and It's all a matter of learning how to use them, just like in real life.
I have just visited New York City. The day you uploaded this video, I landed at JFK and took an AirTrain to Jamaica, then a LIRR train to Grand Central. What surprised me was that when I showed the ticket to the ticket checking guy, he used a nail clipper to cut it. It also didn't help that he looked a bit like Hitler. I also took the subway from the 28th when I visited the 9/11 memorial. When I was in the sub, a homeless guy pushed himself through and force opened the door while shouting "Open it! Open the fucking door! I ain't putting out no fucking cigarette! Open the fucking door!". Cool experience.
There actually is a third rail, but only at Francis International Airport. There are even signs warning you about the high voltage at the platform. The two accessible stations are a nice touch, a reference to the MTAs small number of accessibility friendly stations. Good thing though, is thay they are working hard to improve that. Thanks for watching!
Yeah, but it would have been nice if the entire lines had a third rail. It would been more realistic if all stations had elevators or ramps and signs warning about the high voltage. These warning signs are nice detail, but just for decoration as stepping on the tracks won't electrocute the player or any NPC, a feature that GTA 1 and 2 had.

I recommend trying Mafia (2002). They also have a public transit system. Specifically trams and what we call ,,nadzemka" or "above-ground train" which are the trains built on these tracks that run above the normal roads for cars in areas such as New York.
If you don't go through the turnstiles and board the train, you get 1-star wanted for fare evasion. That's probably what happened instead of bumping into the guy.

Great video, I'm also a little nerd when it comes to in-game train systems. I'm sad that you didn't mention Grand Easton Terminal and the lack of its interior which would have been a really nice addition to the game.
That's why I didn't mention it. I was going to make a segment, but it was so disappointing that it wasn't in the game as an enterable building, as it is one of the NY defining landmarks. Thank you for the support!
this and Watch Dogs have the best transportation systems! And I really cannot understand why games that use large cities with huge maps, don't implement public transportation. It's an amazing way to keep you in a game for me at least! Great video, you address an important matter that is missing from these kind of games nowadays
Thank you for the comment and the support! I do really think that adding everyday abilities largely improves immersion, as then it feels more relatable to the audience.
4:12 JFK Express used to go to Howard Beach JFK back then, but it was discounted by April 1990 due to low ridership, not just that there was also sued to be shuttle bus going directly to JFK after you got off from JFK Express
As a Brooklyn resident It's impressive how rockstar managed to make train stations this close to the NY train stations sure it's not 100% accurate and can be confusing but in terms of how it looks it's very good.
this was a great video, i play this game non stop just riding and exploring the subway. i have made a note in my phone ranking all the stations with photos and notes on what i think of each. all based on everything from the interiors, entrances, stairwells and clientele. im living in toronto for the summer and it pains me that when i move back home i won’t be able to ride a real subway every chance i get but at least ill still have this game 😅
I can remember from the leaks that there were minimum 2. Trains. One looked like the downtown Monorail and another had VCIA on it so maybe a dedicated airport people mover.
@realmynameshiro there is a mod to make the subway trains and textures similar to the real life NYC subway! you can look it up and easily find it. I hope you find this helpful, have a wonderful day!
I never liked the fact that not only are there exactly two stations in Bohan, they're within walking distance of each other. Lynch Street is built to resemble the Forest Hills LIRR station. Schottler is built to resemble the 46th Street station on the 7 line. Hove Beach is built to resemble the West 8th Street station in Coney Island. Francis International is built to resemble a JFK AirTrain station.
@TheTransitDiaries i love the way u make the GTA worlds i enjoyed so much over the years even more personal and real! Keep doing your thing it is so valuable ❤
The subway was always the most fascinating part of GTA IV for me. The way it actually worked fine in spite of its extemely eerie and depressing atmosphere... 3:15 The only thing that's off for me is the unnecessary loops that some lines make. For example the 3/8 lines in Dukes, the loop that they make north of Francis Airport back to Huntington is completely unnecessary provided that there are zero stops in that section. They could just turn around at the Airport and many kms of elevated tracks infrastructure could be avoided. An even worse example happens with the E/B lines in Bohan, there's nothing after Windmill so why make such a huge loop around the whole island with even an additional bridge, when the trains could just turn around at Windmill and go back to Frankfurt using the already existing bridge?? Either the developers were planning to add more stops in these loops but somehow never got added, or they were just trying to add as many kms of tracks as possible throughout the map despite not making sense.
That is an interesting thing to think about, I could picture it having to do with the console storage limitations at the time. The Elder Scrolls series had some similiar issues as well at the time, which could be a good hint.
@@TheTransitDiaries that's an interesting thought. However I've noticed a similar pattern of excessive transport infrastructure that goes to nowhere with in GTA V, such as in some Los Santos highways. For example the Elysian Fields Freeway makes a huge detour south of the city, going all the way to the airport and above the port... to have basically no accesses to any of those places (only a minor intersection to a single port industry). In real life there would be little use for a freeway that makes a huge loop on purpose through places that it has no access to. It just seems to me that Rockstar didn't have many civil engineers in their ranks to plan this stuff realistically. I'm a civil engineer myself so maybe that's why I'm seeing all this lol.
One time I did a playthrough of this game and if it was possible, I'd use the train to get everywhere during missions, it was pretty cool. I don't think you can get this experience in any other GTA. I did eventually miss driving around but its a nice feature that brings more life to the ingame world.
I skipped GTA IV because at the time my PC couldn't handle it and then when V dropped I played on consoles, I need to revisit this game for sure, I was curiously the other day trying to check the subway on GTA V and whatnot, this is so cool!
This is one of my favorite genres of videos: exploring the aspects of a game that people don't usually notice because they're too busy killing the npcs.
if you read all the comments, time to learn that Panathinaikos, after Euroleague cup, won the domestic league too, winning 3-2 to a series in which they made a historic comeback from 0-2 ps. I really like this sort of content, it's what shows how much work was put into iv
For a game made in 2008, it's insane how detailed it is. In many ways, I still think Liberty City's the most realistic city I've seen in a video game. If you just take a stroll and look at all the random details, you'll almost forget it's a fake city. The part that I think is most impressive is how much detail they put into stuff like masonry and brickwork on every building
The subway system in GTA IV is so impressive, like they didn't need to do it that detailed but they did it anyways. I would like to see buses running around the streets and maybe could use them just as taxis. That's the only downgrade the game has about transport
Game devs had such vision when making those games, too bad storage limitations were a big thing back then. Hopefully GTA VI absolutely crushes the competition!
The next station on the K/C Line from East Park, Easton, is definitely worth checking out, since it's the only station in the entire system that's a transfer point. Well, besides Huntington Street in Dukes, but that's to the same line. Easton also has a pretty neat entrance on Burlesque that's modeled after the entrance to Times Square-42nd Street Station in real life.
@@TheTransitDiaries The most surprising thing about this is that even in the PS3 version the textures of the purchase receipts you see on the floor or some papers or newspaper clippings are almost legible, while in the vast majority of PS4 and PS5 games we still see video games with incredibly blurry and poorly made textures.
@@TheTransitDiaries You can even see the name of the song from the mp3 walkman that pedestrians carry! Pedestrians that create a more lively and varied atmosphere than GTA V, in the latter they don't even carry bags or move in the subway, and if you get close to them they get - they are really irritating and a downgrade from GTA 4. In GTA 4 NPCs eat, smoke, read and do other things while sitting on a bench, in GTA V they do absolutely nothing - we can also talk about their reactions and response to the environment or their animations inside the vehicle. It's these little details that go unnoticed by people that make GTA 4 superior to GTA V.

Learned more about gta and subways, gta4 a banger like always, really great work with the video, well done
Thank you so much! Hopefully I'll make more in the future
@@TheTransitDiaries your welcome, im always down for some nice gta4 contant. Its 8 yrs old but i still learn stuff about random shit ppl are passionate about, and i love it
3:07 Is that Niko?🧐 Awesome video
Thank you!!!
I don't consider myself a train/public transport nut like you (no offense) but I do get tingly when little details like this are introduced into the game world. Few people will ever care about it, but dammit, I do.
Cool to hear! Glad enjoyed me going off for 10 minutes about trains in GTA
These are really fun videos. I never knew how functional the systems were in GTA.
I'll make more videos like this! Stay tuned!
4:12 JFK Express used to go to Howard Beach JFK back then, but it was discounted by April 1990 due to low ridership, not just that there was also sued to be shuttle bus going directly to JFK after you got off from JFK Express
Great video, you should make it longer since many people would like to know more facts about LC!
Noted!
Actually there IS a 3rd rail but for some reason its only present in the tracks around the airport. Check it up!
The LTA Headquarters is the exact replica of the NYC Transit Authority HQ in Downtown Brooklyn, NY
That's awesome!
You should do the Watch dogs transport system in the next video since it’s based on Chicago
That's a great idea!
As a Brooklyn resident It's impressive how rockstar managed to make train stations this close to the NY train stations sure it's not 100% accurate and can be confusing but in terms of how it looks it's very good.
I agree! Super cool to have a New Yorker watch this video, many thanks!
You make me appreciate these games all over again, thanks!😊
I'm glad you enjoyed the content, there will be more on the way!
Would love to see you cover Night City's public transit NCart system, busses and Combat Cab taxi kiosks
this was a great video, i play this game non stop just riding and exploring the subway. i have made a note in my phone ranking all the stations with photos and notes on what i think of each. all based on everything from the interiors, entrances, stairwells and clientele. im living in toronto for the summer and it pains me that when i move back home i won’t be able to ride a real subway every chance i get but at least ill still have this game 😅
Wow, you're a super fan! Thank you for the support!
0:41 really, a derailed train already
1:56 'A long queen' 😅
I really like the design of the Triangle / Easton station and the Saxophone player in Chinatown. Amazing details in this game!
I'm glad you covered this! Do you think you would cover the public transit in the older GTA games like GTA III? What graphics mod were you using btw?
Hey! There were no mods used. I am planning on making more videos like this, I'll have to see what games though. Thank you for the support!
I wounded what GTA 6 metro would be like
Does Miami have a subway?
@@tgypoi yes, the metrorail, operating since 1984
@@tgypoithere's two metro lines
I hope it’s not like the one in GTA V, the one in GTA V is boring asf to be honest
I can remember from the leaks that there were minimum 2. Trains. One looked like the downtown Monorail and another had VCIA on it so maybe a dedicated airport people mover.
North Park actually looks like Chamber St
That's actually a great comparison! Good insight!
@@TheTransitDiaries Yes thanks
@@TheTransitDiaries Are there mods to improve the Liberty City transit in GTA:IV?
@realmynameshiro there is a mod to make the subway trains and textures similar to the real life NYC subway! you can look it up and easily find it. I hope you find this helpful, have a wonderful day!
id say to make longer videos if you're able to! i love this content and want more
Thank you! More is on the way!
I never understood why GTA IV did not adjust for time when on the subway so you won't be late for hangouts & dates
That is quite frustrating, I would have appreciated more detail to that as well.
Looks like you are a fellow railfan! Great observations!
@TheTransitDiaries i love the way u make the GTA worlds i enjoyed so much over the years even more personal and real! Keep doing your thing it is so valuable ❤
Thank you! I will hopefully do more!
Great video, even from someone whos not interested in trains
Thank you!
Hell yeah dude this video was awesome, I'm going to go look into the other transit systems in Grand theft Auto LMAO
And I'll make more videos like this one!
One time I did a playthrough of this game and if it was possible, I'd use the train to get everywhere during missions, it was pretty cool. I don't think you can get this experience in any other GTA. I did eventually miss driving around but its a nice feature that brings more life to the ingame world.
Very true! I think mobility can change the way a Gane feels a lot more than most people think
Gta sa public transport next?
Can't wait for it
I skipped GTA IV because at the time my PC couldn't handle it and then when V dropped I played on consoles, I need to revisit this game for sure, I was curiously the other day trying to check the subway on GTA V and whatnot, this is so cool!
Thank you so much!
9:22 maybe they are using energy from tracks.
No such thing exists in real life. Some trains get the electricity from a 3rd feeder rail, but never from the main rails
I never thought a video about public transportation in a game could be so interesting
Thanks you! Me neither :D
This is one of my favorite genres of videos: exploring the aspects of a game that people don't usually notice because they're too busy killing the npcs.
More to come soon! Wait, how do you know about being busy killing NPCs 😳
@@TheTransitDiaries just a hunch 🥸
Cool video you should tour every station
Please do the Night City Rapid Transit from Cyberpunk 2077 next!
Good suggestion!
if you read all the comments, time to learn that Panathinaikos, after Euroleague cup, won the domestic league too, winning 3-2 to a series in which they made a historic comeback from 0-2
ps. I really like this sort of content, it's what shows how much work was put into iv
Thank you!!!
Very true! The other comparable game nowadays is probably hitman, and that's a modern franchise!
I always took the subway in GTA4. It's a lot of fun.
If there is one thing that I love most ever since moving to NYC, it has to be the subway system.
For sure! I love the NYC subway, the people who planned it were geniuses who introduced new concepts and future proofed it for years to come!
Interesting insights!
This video was awesome!
Many thanks!
Would love to see a RDR1 and RDR2 transit system critique. The locomotives would be neat to talk abt.
Good idea!
People who say that this was a useless feature lost the point thst this game was also a work of art
Very true statement. It made you feel like you in more than just a game map.
Why are these so good I’ve watched like 2 already 😅
Hopefully more to come!
This was a great video! keep it up dude
Thank you!
In GTA 4 you can see even metro o subway tickets around ground - GREAT texture details too in this game.
Yes!
@@TheTransitDiaries Everyone has their opinion, but I think GTA 4 is the most worked, best made and most detailed video game in history.
Omg I love this series 🎉❤😊
Glad to hear that!
Subs to you for this wonderful video series
Also I hated this subway system in this game just because the cops kept trying to arrest me everytime they saw me riding a subway, like I PAY THE TICKETS YOU KNOW, WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME? IT'S *PUBLIC TRANSPORT*
GTA has an awesome sense of humor. Thank you for the support!
I might be biased but it's amazing
You are back! Yes, the LTA subway is truly amazing!
