the main reason why Otto wanted Aegon to be bought to him first was because he could have manipulated his mind in killing Renyera and everyone on Dragonstone and he knew that if Alicent got to him first she would advised against it.

Jaeherys was called the Conciliator because even though Aegon conquered the kingdoms it was his policies which were considered to have truly united them. For example, he reformed the laws so that they would be more standardized throughout the entirety of the realm, and also built the road network that connects all the kingdoms together.

The sword crossing, the tapestry, the bagpipes playing “king’s arrival” from GoT, proud Otto enjoying his life’s work, the veiled & somber Queen kissing the King, the Septons marking his forehead, the King bowing to the Seven as he is only accountable to god, everyone in turn bowing him. I was blown away by the details in the coronation. It was like watching Nicholas II being crowned in an Orthodox ceremony with all the hollow pomp & circumstance of a rotting system. It's what I'd always envisioned from a GoT coronation. Tom Glynn-Carney was terrific in bringing out Aegon's fear, hesitation, pride & euphoria all at once. I'm glad they kept much despised Criston putting the Conqueror's crown on Aegon II's head. The Kingmaker is born! What the show's doing really well is the details, down to locking up servants. Usually the passionate debates, the sense of treachery, the heartbreak are glossed over & we only see the regime change as a "fait accompli". This bring to life the mechanism that historically goes behind a coup, which I assume is as emotionally taxing for the people seizing power. That's why I like agonized & conflicted Alicent more than her steadfast source counterpart. It's more flesh & blood. She vacillates but her messianic fear for her children fates her to make a cursed gamble.

Beast beneath the boards is referring to much more than Meleys me thinks. It's basically referring to everything this episode and I think that's the point. It's referring to Aemond's ambitions for the throne. It's referring to Otto's brutal machinations behind his calm exterior. It's referring to Aegon's hidden depravity -- did you see the way Helaena recoiled when bowing to Aegon? It's referring to the White Worm's warning to Otto about how it's the people who ultimately enable them. As Larys said, Otto knew about the White Worm but allowed her to exist and essentially grow in the shadows. That was great writing. Our newly anointed king Aegon II was hiding beneath the "boards" too. Maybe we were looking at the wrong beast this whole time.

Alicent reminded me of Margaery Tyrell a lot in this episode because she wants to play the game without murdering or torturing innocent people. When Margaery played the game, she didn’t kill anyone in cold blood for her own gain at all. She manipulated people but didn’t get anyone killed. When I watched GOT, I always believed that despite Margaery being manipulative, she was genuinely capable of being kind and compassionate to certain people because she never brought any harm to them and gave them win win solutions that would or would’ve resulted in their favor alongside her own. Like Alicent, I believe she cared about her 1st and 3rd husband in a way and I don’t think she ever wanted to harm anyone or be violent automatically. So Alicent has a little bit of Margaery in her. Which makes since because Alicent is somewhat of an ancestor to Margaery and Loras because they have Tyrell and Hightower blood in them.

The Lady of House Fell, who tells Otto that House Fell won't break its oath to Princess Rhaenyra, was, according to the book 'Fire & Blood', executed by Otto; and she wasn't the only one. The people who Otto is forcing to kneel and pledge fealty to Aegon are not just courtiers; they are lords or ladies of Houses, not Paramount Houses (such as Tully or Tyrell) but minor Houses of varying influence, or Otto wouldn't bother to force their allegiance (he'd just pen them up like the servants until Aegon was safely enthroned).

Rhaenys hasn't read the book Fire & Blood to know of horrors to come. So her pre-emptively nuking half her own family would've been OP. Having said that, the Rhaenys bit was to give audience a 'send home happy' moment which wasn't necessary. The coronation was fantastic in itself. But gawd forbid the ''bad guys" are on top in one episode. Those who thought lowborns of KL have any obligation to support Rhaenyra are in for big disappointments. Aegon claims his birthright from popular King Jaehaerys' Great Council ordering that the king's firstborn male son is the next king. Viserys himself won it over Rhaenys like that. Best part of this was the politics, less dragons the better. Despairing mom version of alicent does highlight her humanity more than the colder iteration of the actual green council. A well needed adjustment imo but also a continuation of her temperament from the Harrenhall or dagger scenes. They've constantly shown subtleties in that character which the audience tend to wilfully ignore since we're watching this as a team sport and we gotta cheer team lovable manipulative dad. Her being more humanized shouldn't be an issue unless one wants the show to remain grotesquely tilted towards Black (Laenor's death,Rhaenyra killing Vaemond, etc)

Whats sad is everyone is a victim in this show to their circumstance in some way. Aegon was so messed up and it doesn’t help that he was pressured and responsible since day one but yet had no guidance or affection from anyone (Viserys didn’t even glance at him)
Aemond considered it, but at the same time he was always about duty so he wouldn’t bend the rules and even if he would like to be king he won’t take his brother off since he is the eldest (which makes sense on what happened next episode, the book says he meant to do what he did- but it was based on the pov of random people on the ground, it wouldn’t make sense for his character to screw duty and mess everything up, which is why the show does so well with showing us what actually happened [GRRM also is the executive producer so it makes sense])

Ironic cause in a way they are the cersei and jaime of this show lol.the last 3 mins aside,i thought this was an excellent episode. it felt like a white house political thriller with a "race against time" feel from start to finish suspense. When Otto was moving around these chess pieces, Beesbury screaming, Caswell hanging..I was on the edge of my seat. I knew how good it was when it had reactors already coping for comeuppance lol. Tom Glynn-Carney showed excellent range as Aegon. But it got overshadowed by 3 mins of a Rhaenys "happy ending" smdh lmao. Rhaenyra stan learns about ambiguity & moral dilemma that comes with making a gamble of a lifetime, & finds anything more than Gaslight Gatekeep Girlboss versions of characters hard to process. The Queen's issue wasn't that Aegon shouldn't be king. It was that the Queen and the Hand had two completely different visions of ruling, and Renly's "he who holds the king holds the kingdom" is apparently a hard concept.

I love the way Meleys chirps and trills as she's stunning and stomping people to (probable) death. To do her justice, I don't think the Red Queen (Meleys' nickname) is deliberately trying to kill the poor smallfolk, they're just all obstacles in her way out of the pit and she's too big to be delicate, and the crowd is too dense to avoid casualties.

House of dragon is in my opinion much faster paced and condensed with info and events on each episode, than game of thrones was at least as long as books were followed. Its much easier to get into, with just a few episodes because the scale is smaller and the characters fewer, so it has the power to introduce the few families much faster, and get the viewer hooked easier. Its not necessarily better or worse, its just different. Personally I love the pace on both, but game of thrones was much slower paced especially on early season 1 so it lost some viewers there imo. The great thing about house of dragon is that we have all the book material available for the whole story. That's amazing, because we all know where game of thrones went, when they ran out of material. Simply put it has the potential to be a perfect show.

I did not think I could dislike a courtier as much as Petyr Baelish but Larys Strong is up there after this episode. He does have a clubfoot (in the books he's called The Clubfoot). I don't know why he hates Rhaenerya so much, considering her children are his biological nephews. Though I guess he thinks she brought shame to his house. But I'd be more ashamed if word got out I was jerking it to feet. That's worse than sleeping with a hot princess in my mind.
There is an interesting theory that Larys might be a warg (like Bran), and he uses the rats to see what is going on in the castle as Bran could see through Summer's eyes. I noticed you were wondering why there were so many shots of rats, so that is a possible explanation. Though it could just be a metaphor for all the schemers in the castle.

I think GoT season 1 was better because of Ned and because I think the relationships/ families were established a bit better because there were not any time jumps. I also think it's unfair to compare because GoT had ground breaking moments like Ned/ the dragons etc, because the world was new and the death of "main" characters wasn't that common at that time. With House of the Dragon, people are already coming in with previous expectations/ prior knowledge of the world. Having said that, I think the characters in HoTD are more grey and I think over time, this show has the potential to supersede GoT in terms of characters. I'm excited for S2 :)

In the book, Helaena and Aegon have three children at this point: Jaehaerys and Jaehaera (who are a little older, aged five or six) and little Maelor (aged two). I don't think Maelor is in the show, which is just as well, considering his fate in the book...

Concerning Ser Harrold Westerling's age - the Kingsguard serve for life, until they are killed in battle or otherwise die, even if their skills are not what they were in their prime. Ser Crispy may be a jerk and a murderer, but he is an outstanding fighter; I'm not sure that Ser Harrold could defeat him, though it would be nice.

Honestly Daemon and Aemond carrying the show. And Allicent, I won’t lie she’s been doing her best so far and is one of the most compelling characters.
If anything and it comes to it I’d be fine if Aemond sat the throne and continued the Targaryen line

Rhaenys had been told by Ser Erryk that the dragon exits (the tunnels) were guarded; she could not have escaped that way without risking her own life and/or that of her dragon and, if she had been killed, many more lives lost due to the resulting wrath of the Sea Snake and House Velaryon, whose Lady she was.

The cold opening episode 1 of GoT was all it took to have me hooked. It was so different to anything on TV. And the scene was so evocative. I binged the whole season in 2 days.
HoTD is a different situation. I hated S8 and was hesitant about being drawn in again. But episode 1 was so strong for me. I was hooked all over again.
