(to the 1st caller) I am black, we are not all like this simpleton, he can't even put together a valid idea or sentence. I'm new to atheism and by logic I can't understand how one can be an atheist and adamantly oppose gay marriage (in which you have the freedom to do so) but it makes no sense or I should say reason. Like matt said if your against gay rights, its the equivalent to being against interracial marriage because the premise is that its wrong (even if they love each other) because of a predefined reason that's not subject to change or amendable.

This fellow regardless of his pigmentation has proven that simply because you identify as an atheist does in no way indicate that you are intelligent or understanding how to articulate a rational argument via critical thinking skills.
Chad K yes it is equivalent because the arguments against gay marriage are based on the same arbitrary, religious based prejudice with NO valid reason for prohibiting it. The act of inter-racial or gay marriage has no impact whatsoever on existing marriages with a religious foundation. Marriage initially tended to be a legal/political contract in order to protect a person’s or group’s assets as well as strengthen the power of a group through cohesion. The “idea” of marriage is defined by the culture, society and time period you live in. In the US religion is attempting to redefine and co-opt the institution simply in order to impose their values on others - marriage as defined in the Bible is quite different to how it is currently viewed in modern western cultures and even then a quick look in popular culture will highlight the lack of substance the Christian Right try to claim.

This pronunciation was my nemonic device when it was a spelling word on an elementary school test. I have also pronounced it that way to be funny (trust me, I am quite hilarious), but this almost caused me to spit toothpaste all over the bathroom mirror.

At 19:20 the guy asks how can energy and mass (he meant matter) exist without space and time.
The photon is a 0 time particle. It doesn't exist within time, but yet we see light.
Energy can exist without space and time. Matter cannot exist without space and time.
What a lot of these callers don't realize is that before the big bang it's always said that there was nothing, but nothing to scientists is different than what other think nothing is.
Nothing to scientists are just all the components that make up the universe, all broken down with no laws or forces. But it's still something.
The question is, what is the nature of that nothing? :)
The big bang doesn't proclaim from nothing. It states that we can't go before plank time but a singularity best fits the model. Another note that yes it's the beginning of the universe but not the cosmos. Scientifically these terms are not interchangeable

This video is a little trippy with the weird feedback, the changing filters and all of a sudden Jeff appearing.
In the macro world, causes certainly seem to be followed by effects.
However, in the micro world, the issue is in doubt. Feynman for instance, showed that cause and effect can be complicated by particles (like the electron) could also be _travelling backwards in time_ - the math is quite happy about both cases. Read his brilliant book: 'QED'.
@GoodAvatar Hehe, that last thing is a problem for me too ;) One grows so accustomed to forcing out definitions from and overclarifying to those people that when speaking to normal minds one easily makes a fool out of oneself.

You are correct in that the meaning is the same. However, consider the original Greek word, hypotithenai, is also one word. In English, when you split the term hypothesis into two words, even though it doesn't really change the meaning, it eliminates the normal placement of the stressed syllable, producing an awkward pronunciation that causes the speaker's message to be more difficult to comprehend. Example: notice how Jeff and Matt paused to clarify the word he had incorrectly pronounced.
That first caller was totally not understandable. What a tough show - weird callers, tech stuff going wrong, lights going out. Thanks for holding it together guys.

@Jahkillian I know that in the past marriage was a ceremony often only available to the "higher class" and the marriage was used usually for political reasons, but we no longer live in those times, do me a favor, go ask a married couple why they are married, I guarantee their answer will be "Because we love each other.".
Christmas didn't involve santa, Easter didn't involve a rabbit giving chocolate eggs, what it was and what it's become are two completely different things.
I looked it up, it's a generalization of logical principles of a mathematical structures (those of a Hilbert space) for describing quantum mechanics, I can't see how this can make you argue that not everything "'obeys' the 'laws of logic'".

Observation of cosmic inflation only proves that the physical universe was smaller in the past, not that it exploded from a singularity and hyper-inflated.
I wonder if during the first 5 minutes of this show, the people in the control booth were thinking "Well, this caller isn't making any sense. We might as well take this time to test the blue screen!"
I sympathize with Chase from Norman. The religious nutbags in Oklahoma forced me to flee. There is something very wrong with the "if you're not with me, I'm against you" attitude so many Christians actually live by.

While the origin of this energy symmetry is yet unknown (remember the breakdown of GR) there are QM observations which show that energy can be borrowed from empty space temporarily creating both negative & positive energy which makes sense when dealing with the extremely small (perhaps this might include singularities) due to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle.

The success rate of AA and churches' ability to help addiction is only 1 person out of 1000 to refrain for over 5 years. I wouldn't call that success. I've tried 12 steps myself and found it promoted me to drink more, and that is because they continually talk about and make ME talk about something I love. It is destructive to most people, and I would argue that it drives people to abuse substances even harder down the road of "recovery". It needs to be dissolved and resources poured into the discovery of a better more efficient means. Peace ☮💜

Hypo-thesis meaning a really excited idea.
Hypo-: Prefix meaning low, under, beneath, down, or below normal, as in hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and hyposensitivity (undersensitivity). The opposite of hypo- is hyper-.
My god (or lack thereof), when Jeff get mad or at all irrate, he goes all dakside. I love it.
