  • What do you think? Is street photography dead? Or is it alive and kicking? It could be that we are just tired from social media, not from street photography... I'm not sure.
    To be clear: I don't mean to declare street photography as dead, I just want to share my thoughts... Feel free to share yours in the comments!

    i wish youtube shorts would be dead =-) thanks for still making the occasional "normal" video despite the time and effort not being rewarded by the algorithm as much as it should be. with regard to the question in the video, i think that part of what keeps street photography alive as an art form is that the streets constantly change. the people and their fashion, what they're doing when you happen to be out, the environment. it is all in flux. sure, there are images from other photographers that you can recreate if you shoot in a place that's been heavily photographed, but i think that even in replicating those shots you add your own style and many of those obvious shots can be relatively easy to avoid if you wanted. is street photography still viable as a profession? probably as much as it was at any point in its history. except, street photographers now have youtube and other social media as potential revenue sources instead of having to rely solely on commercial projects and gallery shows.

      Thanks for your comprehensive comment Cleetus! You are not the only one who doesn’t like shorts 😅 I have to say, making them is pretty fun but of course I will keep making these video’s as well. I agree with you that the street photographers of this age have social media and internet to create other revenue streams. It’s a great time to be alive 😃🙏

    I think its social media that might be the problem. Too much out there and instagram - what's happened to it? Ads and "reels" flooding my feed making it almost impossible to follow. Plus Covid! As a result of this I haven't posted any images for a long time and I feel totally jaded by the experience. Street is not dead per se, just photograph for yourself. I'm trying to embrace the joy of it, which is what started me in photography all those decades ago!

    The more unique genre would be documentary photography as it has some storytelling.

    Don't compare yourself with others! Everyone tried it ones, try shooting from a divergent angle!
    Easy for me to say, but I feel the same about street photography. That's why I don't make a lot of POV content anymore🥲. Most of the time it's the same sort of photo, but with a different edit.. That's what these days make or brake a photo.
    But Niels, I missed my name in ''8 of the worlds greatest photographers''. Ahhh that's right, im out out this world🔥☠

    When Instagram started pushing Reels, engagement with photo posts became almost non-existent. The last post I made on Instagram was April 9th of 2022. It’s just not worth it anymore to put the effort into taking photos that very few people will see.

    • @NielsdeKemp
      @NielsdeKemp  2 года назад +4

      But is Instagram the only measure for street photography? There should be other ways to show your work to the world… Street photography existed well before the ara of social media and (I hope) will last longer too. I hope the conclusion on this subject will be: Instagram is dead, streetphotography is more populair then ever! 😅😃

  • @kcphotogeek6207
    @kcphotogeek6207 Год назад +1

    Street photography is and will ever evolve as people and society are forever changing. Yes there is lots of content but there is also a lot of repetition and copycats. As long you follow and trust their own eye rather than what's popular you'll improve...easier said than done I know but if it was easy it wouldn't be worth doing

    Thanks for sharing. Good points, but that everything has been shot applies to all genres of photography, in my opinion. But, we can still shoot for our own enjoyment fortunately😀 By the way I like your happy approach, you should keep posting videos more often. Not only shorts😀

    Hi Niels, om iets niet meer te doen omdat iets al gedaan is dan kan haast iedereen stoppen met wat hij/zij doet ;) Belangrijkste is dat je er plezier in hebt en als je ergens op zo'n manier tegen aan loopt dan is het goed om er iets mee te doen.

    • @NielsdeKemp
      @NielsdeKemp  2 года назад

      Het zit een beetje in de nuance denk ik, tuurlijk kan je niet altijd de pioneer zijn. Toch kan iets ook doodbloeden omdat er niets nieuws meer te vinden is en men er niet meer op zit te wachten. Plezier is en blijft het belangrijkste natuurlijk!

    In music every note has been played but it doesn't stop musicians creating something unique to themselves. It is the same for creating images. Even if one is deliberately trying to copy another photographers style the photo created will be unique, just not original in concept. I think the best way is to take inspiration from cinema, art and of course other photographers (and photography styles/genres) but then mix them all up into your own style. I haven't found my style yet (and maybe I never will) but it sure is fun looking for it!

    I really enjoyed your video! I think Street Photography will always be a thing. Actually with a lot of younger people showing their approach to Street Photography the whole genre is evolving and creating sub-genres like Street Portraits or night scenes. Greetings from Cologne, Germany! Subscribed :D

    A real photographer's work is always a joy to see. And we can still appreciate a good photo exhibition as somewhere to socialize, visit and ponder over. Most people now use phones for social media, which seems to be a mixture of Video and Photos combined with added music. And they can create their own photo gallery on any social media site. They will get more viewed than anyone visiting a City Art Gallery. Using a drone is not in any way street photography! That's a different form of photography completely. But I guess we have to move with the times and modern development, and technological advances, that offer more forms of creativity. If we want to remain in the game and achieve publicity for your work.

    Wel leuk om naar te kijken om op de afsluiting terug te komen .... en of straatfotografie 'dood' is? zolang je lol hebt om gewoon met je camera op pad te gaan is dat wat mij betreft meer dan voldoende waardevol .........

    • @NielsdeKemp
      @NielsdeKemp  2 года назад +2

      Helemaal mee eens, de lol is het belangrijkste. Toch is het fijn als je werk ook wordt gewaardeerd door de rest van de wereld, en dat je niet het gevoel krijgt dat je in een lange rij van mensen staat die hetzelfde doen 😅

    social media has kind of killed most of photography, all the biggest photo youtube channels, hardly ever take any photos of anything interesting, it's mostly them plugging their light rooms presets, nick nacks, and the next review of a camera less then 1% of their subscribers can ever even afford. i'm not ever sure i care about professional photos anymore, it comes with all this arrogance, and entitlement that i find annoying, i think whats actually dead is photography on social media as a career, because imo youtube just ends up being an endless plug to sell your stuff, and reviews of things out of everyones reach, so yeah thats def dead, i stopped watching a couple big channels because it's all just gear, i just started this as a hobby , i dont care about some nikon z9, it's a 6k camera, i maxed my self out on a older Canon 90D, a fine camera, but some would say DSLRs ..are dead so maybe it's just the next thing, which is videos, kills the last thing, which was photos, IG is 100% dead to photos now.

    • @NielsdeKemp
      @NielsdeKemp  2 года назад +2

      Yeah I agree… That’s why I try to make this channel about shooting and experiencing photography and not about making a side income selling crap you don’t need. Different camera’s are really fun to show and use, but it should not be about the latest greatest almost no one can afford. Creating on RUclips is pretty frustrating at times, for instance the video I made with my dad about our road trip, which in my opinion is just a fun video about two photographers having fun, just does not get picked up by the algorithm… That’s a hard thing for me, deciding between creating the video’s that mean most to me, and the video’s that should get a lot of views. (I do think there is a middle road though) Thank you for your reaction 🙏

    Not just street photography all the genres of photography are dead. Took over by 9:16 aspect ratio garbage on YT' SHORTS. Instas Reels, Tiktok bs. That's the end of SM's tasteless, poor-quality meaningless mass-production of garbage of cliches. After 40 years of photography, I never thought that this art form would get so low and nerve-wracking to watch on SM. Obviously, there are some very good exceptions, thanks to those guys who don't follow the stupid trend. Ok, I'm out taking pictures of Landscapes for Insta's 9:16 aspect ratio and I hope it would be a vertical masterpiece.

    I tend to think street is dead in the sense that there are not really aesthetic or conceptual innovations happening (at least none that I am aware of) in it and that so much street photography appears to be fueled by nostalgia. The one huge exception is cell phone videos of police violence against black men. If these are considered street photography they have an important social / political role to play, and show that the genre is still important as a form of citizen journalism / documentary.

    • @NielsdeKemp
      @NielsdeKemp  2 года назад +1

      Or could it be that the images we now consider as being not aesthetic, in twenty or thirty years time will become nostalgic as well? I’m not sure…

      @@NielsdeKemp sorry, I probably should have said “formal” instead of aesthetic since I didn’t mean it in the sense of aesthetic judgement. But yes, I’m sure you are right!

    Op knipser met de bekende landen extensie publiceer ik veel foto's. Vrijwel alles is straat fotografie. Er zijn nog steeds massa's onderwerpen. Enige probleem: bepaalde nieuwe nederlanders die compleet over de rooie gaan als ze jou met een camera zien lopen.
    De grootste naam was natuurlijk Ed van der Elsken. Maar die leefde in een tijd dat niemand bang was om in een foto te eindigen. Sinds iedereen constant selfies maakt op straat (met mij ongevraagd in de achtergrond) worden ze heel zenuwachtig als ze bij mij in beeld (lijken te) komen. En om de ellenlange discussies over het vermeende portretrecht te voorkomen censureer ik mezelf dan maar.
    Uitzondering: winkelstraten en -centra. Daar heb je nooit gedonder. Op een of andere manier vindt iedereen het daar OK.
