The next step is adding non scream/growl vocals. The outward feel would be different but the core, at least in theory to me, would be right there in your face. Some people are put off by the aggressive appearance of metal but the core of it can be intense tragedy and pain. Emotions and experiences humans have been portraying in their songs and stories since they were invented thousands of years ago.
Ain't nothing wrong with stripping it down. Taking it apart and savoring every piece. There's a lot of pure genius in their writing. 😉
Metalhead and pianist here, playing metal covers on piano is not a compromise. Especially as I can play an entire song without needing band members.

PROS: This could take advantage of the popular "Peanuts" specials which are replayed before Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Wide appeal. People like the childhood memories. :) A short song means less time is committed. Great opportunity to wear a subtle costume. Your faithful Roland could even be 'dressed' as Schroeder's piano.
CONS: The song is originally mostly piano which may make it tricky to arrange differently enough to make if worth while, yet similar enough to connect with the audience.
