When I was a kid we lived on Hazel mountain and shopped in St.Paul. I remember the old men sitting in the corner of the parking lot of Piggly Wiggly whittling and telling tales while their wives was "a trade'n" in the Pig. I have many family members still living in Dante. I've lived on Hazel mountain, on Big Moccasin, and in Dante. I've worked in St.Pual,Castlewood, Abingdon and Bristol at various times. I find myself now living in coastal North Carolina (hence being a misplaced Hillbilly 😉)and these videos of my beloved SWVA sure gives me strong pangs of homesickness.
Hello. Do you remember malnares.,?. A little diner across from the piggly wiggly.. I remember that man at the corner with his knife... God bless you and family
Thanks for this documentary - was born in Dante in 1930... on this film at 6:06 , my Dad on the far left is shown helping load a car of coal, L.F. Griffith worked over 50 years in the mine -- started as a coal loader, retired as General Supt. - died of black lung. Hardest working person I ever knew ( I am 90 now)
Adding a point... the Santa Train stops here once a year, which brings folks to this area from many places. My mother moved from Florida 20 years ago, she held up a sign that said she was from FT MYERS FLORIDA, this got her a lot of attention. I was at the last SANTA TRAIN, been going to it for 40 years now! Yes many things people need to know about the mist precious times of the past. Lets keep the memory of OLD SAINT PAUL alive and well. The coal miners need to be remembered and honored. They helped make St. Paul a good place to live.
Mist was MOST, spell checker did that! I moved to Wise county in 1977, the year of the cold winter and the big flood of ST. PAUL. IT made a lasting memory for some people! Folks could not travel to work or school because the water was way to deep, 1977 made the big difference for the NEW BRIDGE which had to be built, which really helped St. Paul. It is a safe bridge that goes right over the CLINCH RIVER. Time has made a change for the better, let us all come together and let the younger generation learn from the older. Listen to the history of the older "KIDS" stories they have so much to share. There is also the County fairs that needs attention, WISE, and RUSSELL. Wonderful for the people to come from other areas. Folks love the fair! They come because the time is perfect, WISE VA/KY District fair is held in the early summer. RUSSELL County is held Labor Day weekend. There is one woman that has become famous mainly at the WISE county fair...LINDA SKEENS, she has a cookbook coming out very soon. LINDA SKEENS THE BLUE RIBBON KITCHEN. Linda is from DANTE VA, now lives in Russell county. Linda has been on TV, The TODAY SHOW, the HUCKABEE show, and is well known today for her PEANUTBUTTER. FUDGE! look her up!
I use to live on Honey branch road, in st.paul Va..work at the piggly wiggly.. Malnearys was across from the piggly wiggly a little Diner.. God bless everyone. Thank you..
1. Make St Paul an outdoor destination. The river is a great benefit. Canoeing, kayaking, fishing, hiking, etc. 2. Make it a motorcycle friendly destination. For examples, look at the motorcycle destination in Suches, Ga. Look at the motorcycle only campground in Meadows of Dan, Va. There’s also a place at the tail of the dragon in NC. There are also a couple of motorcycle only campgrounds in NC. All of these would bring regular tourism traffic through St Paul.
@@LiamKeary I knew boogie (Steven) very well. We were fairly good friends in school back in the late 1980's to early 90's. We both played drums in the marching band. I haven't seen him since school. He's a great guy.

I live there, and go to Castlewood Elementary school. Not St. Paul school. And yes, I think my home is beautiful!
