    I've been selling online on auction sites since 2003, mostly music equipment. Despite my experience I learned many things from this video, as with ALL your videos. Thank you for taking the time for sharing so much wisdom with us.
    The value of something is determined by what someone is willing to pay. Whether talking about selling online or the cost of salvation through Jesus, it always holds true.

    Great presentation. Today was the first time I have begun looking into selling on gb. I have thought about how best to sell a gun and knew that what I really needed to do was to first educate myself on the ins and outs of online selling and/or buying. Thank you for these tips from your personal experiences. I expect to learn much more before jumping in without a life vest.

    Another great lecture. The beige carpet and overcast light for images, great suggestions. The image is everything. I think if you have something of value you must have a camera that takes high res images, and you should know the camera will adjust the brightness to achieve a brightness equivalent of 18% gray. So you look at an 18% gray image on the internet and go to walmart or target and get a beige sheet set that is close to 18% gray. Then the background is not fighting your attempt to get a good image. If your backyard is real green, it might even be worth while to pick up a second sheet set that is bright magenta or pink to cancel the grn light from the lawn. Set the magenta sheet between the beige sht on the patio and the grn lawn. And don't let anyone know you have pink sheets, who knows what they would think, ...now a days they might force you to run for mayor, or city councilman.

    3 steps to REALLY sell on online auction sites:
    1) Mark up starting price to %300 of actual value
    2)Add “Rare” to title/description regardless of actual rarity
    3)Message back to counter offers “I know what I got”
    In all seriousness this video is full of excellent advice

    Thanks GB, This was in-depth, informative, and solid advise as always. I've been selling on eBay for years but now it's time to sell a gun but I've been feeling intimidated for various reasons. After this video I can see it's completely doable and easer than I expected. Sadly there has been a gun or two over the years that I've traded in towards something I wanted and I really took a bath on the trade for something shiny and new. I didn't want to feel that regret again so I searched the topic and was happy to see a familiar face as one of the top recommended videos on the subject.
    Thanks again for this and everything that you do for the community GB.

    You're very wise. I agree 95% with everything you said. I've spent countless hours studying bidding patterns on gunbroker. I preach the same points to friends selling on gb. The hardest thing to convince them of is starting at .01. One thing I disagree with is assuming the buyer knows his local laws. As someone that lives in MD, many people overlook things such as the approved handgun roster. I'd simply say, no returns to avoid situations like laws and crooks that like to swap out parts.. On a side note: I often misspell search words to find deals.

    Great topic. The one pistol I bought off of GunBroker had about 20 pics. It really helps.
    I recently found another listing that looked promising with 3 pics of one side and one blurry pic of the sights. I asked for more pics of other parts of the gun and the reply was "what do you expect to learn from more pics?"... I got the feeling he did not really want to sell the gun.

    The 'no reserve' auction is the way to get top price for anything you are selling. But it has to be a desired item. I watch a lot of gunbroker auctions and it's amazing to watch used guns sell for more than the same model new. All the time. I'm bidding on a gun now. I've already bid the equal of the same gun new. Or very close. I should hit up the seller for a commission because I know I'll lose this bid and it will go 200 or 300 beyond a rational amount. It's the competition that does it. People lose control and they don't know actual prices and historical sales.

      Yes BUT. If you notice ... many of the good photo providers are the same that give minimal minimal information about the tech details of the gun. They never tell you the twist rate. Seldom show you the bolt. Very seldom describe the bore or if a used gun looks like it has been fired very little. And most of em say ' no returns' in their terms along with some verbiage about the pictures are all you get.

    There is one dealer on Gunbroker that wouldn't answer a question on an Enfield so it went cheap. I would have paid $300.00 more for it than what he got if he gave me the right answer. He has another similar rifle and I asked a question about it and no answer as of yet and it is close to closing . He has mostly A+ Ratings . Hi GunBlue, this is a timely topic for me - thank you for posting this! I've been a member of Gunbroker for a number of years and used it as a buyer only. During October, I tried to "register" - I guess GB requires an elevated registration in order to sell, I tried 7-8 times to message the GB staff because I have been unable to complete the advanced registration. I've NEVER received one response from GB! I was pulling my hair out...and just ran out of time. I don't want to sell during the Holidays because I've noticed prices tend to decline during this time - though this year may prove different. I've uploaded copies of my driver's license and utility bill (as requested by GB). I've checked my spam folder - I've just never received any response whatsoever from GB. Absolutely frustrating!

    Is GunBroker penny/no reserve still applicable to plain jane, less than pristine guns?
    Is a gun show table just as well?
    Owners just want a decent amount, not necessarily top dollar.

    I do very little online auction bidding. I used to, but people have that don't want to lose problem, and too many items I have wanted to purchase have gone far beyond what I was willing to pay for them. I know this is good for the seller, but if I do get interested, the first thing I look for is if there is a reserve. If there is, I just click past it.

    I find auctions get good prices especially now when no one can handle the firearm and rely on photos only. Dealers try giving you 10 cents on the dollar. They also group your guns together to give an impressive looking total but divide it by the number of guns and it's next to nothing. Never let anyone group your firearms and offer a bulk price.

  • @Paladin1873

    Overall this is very good advice for auction sites. In my own case I never post penny auctions nor do I post hidden reserve prices. I always post a minimum opening bid which I know is at or below the prevailing price. Most of my auctions run for a week. Although I have mostly had good luck buying and selling, I have been burned a few times by unscrupulous people. In one case I was sent a Colt Official Police that was advertised and marked as a 38/200. It turned out to be a 38 Special. The seller refused to pay return shipping and was very snide about his mistake, so I returned the favor by giving him an F rating. In another case I won the auction but the seller had already sold the gun to somebody else locally, so the deal fell through. That was a bummer because the price was good. On the other hand, I managed to acquired a beautiful S&W Triple Lock for a good price because the seller never mentioned it was a Triple Lock in his ad, so bidding was low (always look at the photos!). In several cases where I was selling I had to deal with winning buyers who backed out of their purchases, leaving me stuck to pay some hefty dealer fees despite no sales being consummated. In all of these situations, whether buying or selling, the auction sites refused to intervene to help me. The best you can do as a buyer is to file a complaint and post a bad rating. Presumably, if enough complaints are accumulated, the site may ban the seller for a while. In cases where you get stuck paying a fee, about all some sites will do is issue you a credit on your next sale, assuming you have one. In these cases I recommend you file a complaint with your credit card company. Typically, they will compensate you for your loss, but it is unlikely they will take any action against the site. I often wonder how much money these sites make from this unethical practice. It's too bad Brownells doesn't host firearm auctions. Such competition would throw the other sites into a much deserved panic and force them to clean up their acts or go broke. I'd be happy with either outcome.

    • @GunBlue490
      @GunBlue490  3 года назад +4

      Posting a starting price is just as crippling to an auction as having a hidden reserve, because you have blocked the countless big buyers who seek auctions, not priced starting points. That's your prerogative, but it's poor practice, and it's the reason I did this video. Penny sales far outsell all other methods, every time. Period. Priced sales are the mainstream where most folks make pennies, instead of starting with one. But it's not for the faint of heart.
      I'm sorry for your many troubles, which I have never once experienced in hundreds of transactions on different sites.
      You outlined a number of pretty serious offenses against the membership contract that Gunbroker certainly does follow up with, especially with anyone who pulls a gun off the auction after the first bid. It's a one strike, you're out, off the site. I recommend that perhaps you review the contract and remedy provisions, and read the ratings before bidding. A bid is a contractual, irrevocable agreement to buy, so it should not be done unless you are 100% satisfied with the product, having read all descriptions, and viewed all photos to your satisfaction, and are convinced of the seller's reputation. Anything lacking, and you're accepting the likelihood that things are to go sour. Bid only with reputable A+ sellers with a strong history of sales.

    • @Paladin1873
      @Paladin1873 3 года назад +1

      @@GunBlue490 I deal with several auction sites, and rather than cast aspersions at specific ones, I purposely omitted their names from my posting. The incidents I cited did not all occur on the same site. In hundreds of dealings over the last two decades I can say that the vast majority of my experiences as both buyer and seller have been positive. I can't speak to the relative effectiveness of a penny auction vs. other methods because I don't know how you would go about comparing the results of them with other methodologies. Is there a database of statistical analyses that prove the penny auction is superior?
      With regard to your assessment of Gun Broker, if it's one strike your out, they must be using a myopic umpire. None of the dealers I've reported have been banned. The last seller I reported was posting a "rare" factory original Remington bolt action rifle in a caliber for which it was never chambered (or even capable of being chambered). I contacted Remington to verify it was a forgery while the auction was still ongoing and after they confirmed it was fake I notified GB, but they did not stop the auction. The poor sap who bought it ended up spending well north of a grand for his fake rifle.

    The problem with many sellers especially with certain firearms is that they advertise from their suppliers catalog, not their actual inventory. Way too many items paid for and later cancelled because item not in stock. Becomes a waste of time!

      I've never seen such instances of which you speak, and such would be a reportable crime. Nobody can offer a sale on any auction site unless it is available for sale, and to accept bids for a nonexistent item is criminal, fraudulent theft. Question: When you sell a firearm to an individual you must ship to an FFL. If you are an FFL that is no problem. However I know of some FFLs who will not accept firearm from a non FFL. This is to provide legal protection and establish a chain of custody. This prevents them from taking custody of a stolen firearm. So if I sell a firearm on gunbroker it would be wise for me to state that I will use an FFL to ship to the buyers FFL.

    • @GunBlue490
      @GunBlue490  3 года назад +3

      Actually, such requirement insulates no dealer from receiving stolen property, and places him in no legal jeopardy, either. He is given no access to NCIC records, and is not responsible for knowing the history of any firearm. He is not "receiving stolen property" because there is no intent on his part. I speak as a former police officer who prosecuted countless thefts. It's exactly the same as a counterfeit money transaction. The only two parties that are affected are the guilty seller and unwitting buyer. The seller may be prosecuted, and the buyer may loose his money if a stolen gun is seized. The fact that the ATF is satisfied that a gun is legally transferred in shipments from private persons to FFLs speaks volumes. Any FFL who makes up such rules is manufacturing law that doesn't exist, and should not be doing so.

    What a wonderful video. I have been selling on Ebay since 2009 and your advice for online sales will certainly help sellers a great deal. The closer we can come to a face to face experience for the buyer the better we will do. Sir do you think that penny start auctions are also the best way to sell ammunition?

    • @GunBlue490
      @GunBlue490  2 года назад

      Not necessarily. Ammo is typically purchased in direct proportion to current prices. For more rare ammo, I would do penny sales

    • @marianmoses9604
      @marianmoses9604 Год назад

      This proves the point I made in another post to this video. Penny auctions only work well with scarce and rare COLLECTIBLE items that have collectors chasing them. If the item is COMMON you will LOSE YOUR SHIRT in a stinking auction environment starting at a penny.
      Common stuff like everyday ammo is not rare - it’s a commodity - and should be sold at a fixed price based on current market pricing at retail with maybe a small discount to make your listing competitively priced to make it move fast.

      How do you ship a rifle if you're not a dealer?

    • @GunBlue490
      @GunBlue490  3 года назад +3

      @@219garry After the sale, the buyer must contact his chosen FFL dealer, who then sends the seller a copy of his signed Federal Firearms License, which can be either a hard mailed copy, but usually by email. The seller should verify the license number on the ATF website, and if it checks, and payment is received from the buyer, the seller simply mails the firearm, unloaded, directly to the FFL address as stated on the license, along with a copy of his picture ID, and the name, phone number, and address of the buyer. The FFL then notifies the buyer when it arrives at his store for the official transfer processing. The basic rule is that a non licensed person may always ship to a Federal Firearms License holder or licensed manufacturer, but never to an unlicensed person. The sale is completed when the gun has been lawfully shipped, regardless of whether the buyer can lawfully take possession.

      @@GunBlue490 This is correct but every once in a while a FFL dealer will make his own rules and decides that he will only accept a delivery from another FFL if that is the case you can always put in the description that the buyer is responsible for the FFL charges if his dealer will only accept from another FFL

    I use GunBroker quite often but when I sell, I put a starting price because I know the least amount I'll sell it for. What's the advantage of a Penny Auction? I'm always afraid that something will sell lower than what I will take for it. There must be a reason to use the penny auction, but I don't know what it is. Thank you very much!

      Buyer psychology, plain and simple. Penny, no reserve auctions attract more buyers automatically. Just look at the auction listings for "no reserve" $0.01 starting bid, and note the sales action and bids.

    Good info as per usual. I have made thousands of online sales of everything from 6 figure sports cars to an old advertising premium for a dollar and everything in between. My advice is simple. Be brutally honest and disclose any and all flaws. Take good pictures but unless it is a high dollar item don't worry about staging them beyond getting proper lighting and placing the items on a neutral or complementary background. Where possible, pack the items for shipping and label the cartons. This allows the buyer to know exactly how much an item will cost including shipping. For 90% of my items I charge exact shipping costs and use free USPS shipping boxes whenever possible. Over time if you sell a wide variety of items offering free shipping will end up losing you money, and customers appreciate paying the exact cost without handling fees or having shipping baked into the price. Lastly, offer good customer service. Having items packed ahead of time allows me to print shipping labels efficiently. If I am at my desk, I have had labels printed and orders out for shipment before the buyer has time to contact me. Customers love that! Leave feedback where possible, and offer discounts for repeat buyers.

    What should one put in the ad if they have a gun that was bought new as an investment, never fired and is in the box with all
    paperwork that came with it? Technically it is NIB. Should it still be listed as used when it is not? That would be untrue with the seller losing out in the end as they would get less for a used gun.

    • @GunBlue490
      @GunBlue490  2 года назад +1

      The only time a gun is legally defined as "new" is when it is sold by a dealer, previously unsold from the manufacturer. That's the same with any other product. You may say "as new", but the day it was first transferred, it became a used gun, whether it was ever used or not.

    This method of starting auctions at a penny ONLY works IF the item being sold is in high demand and is in great shape.
    If you list something that is common as dirt or in bad condition guess how much it will end up selling for? Yep, that’s right: A Penny! You’ll lose whatever it was worth.
    Auctions work best for rare collectibles. Everything else should be sold at a fixed price that is in line with what that item typically sells for in the condition it is in.

    • @GunBlue490
      @GunBlue490  Год назад

      LOL That's an absurd statistic! I'm glad most folks make selling easy for the rest of us! There's absolutely no such thing as a gun that nobody wants. I've never had fewer than ten bidders chime in on any gun, and it's usually twice or three times that. The number of buyers for guns of every level and type is vast, beyond imagination, from sea to shining sea, and they flock to the lesser guns like a shark frenzy. ALL guns will sell for their maximum potential when listed for a penny, with no exceptions. That's the law of the land. It's the law of auction houses. There's a buyer for EVERY gun, including, most especially the guns in low demand and in crummy condition. Lots of common buyers are willing to compete for such guns. For every buyer of elite guns, there are hundreds of common folks looking for good deals on plain Jane, even no-name, affordable guns to shoot, and they'll gladly compete with anyone else to get them. The more average, the bigger the market, because most buyers buy average guns. Competition drives prices. Wishing for reserve prices does not.
      I've sold many imperfect, very flawed guns that were quite common, and certainly not in high demand. I recently sold a well worn, faded Colt Woodsman pistol with broken Bakelite grips for $730, a 130 year old 10mm French revolver (is that in high demand?) for $1,880, even an 85 year old J.C. Higgins .22 auto with a poorly refinished stock for $625. They all enjoyed fierce competition, just as fierce as the few elite, high market guns that I've sold.
      I recently helped a widow sell her late husband's dozen guns. He had literally butchered each stock, cutting 1-1/2" from every stock, and amateurishly added cheap, cracked, red rubber pads to the stocks that he badly scuffed with a belt sander to fit them. He had cut barrels down to fit his short stature and amateurishly reinstalled front sights. Every gun was badly pitted from being stored by his widow in vinyl cases for 35 years under a bed. You could not have made them in worse condition if you tried. A large Maine gun dealer quoted her $650 for the entire lot of 12 miserable guns that they classified in NRA poor to fair condition, averaging under $55 apiece, and if I were the dealer, selling to a small statewide market, that would have probably been my fair offer, too, figuring maybe $100 apiece, tops. The penny auction, with no reserve spans widely across the entire nation, not just a local market. The guns yielded her $3,200 after her auction fees, averaging a handsome $266 each. Each buyer paid for shipping and insurance, which was considerable, and they all were extremely happy and gave me high reviews. That was very fair value for her husband's badly stored, abused, pitted, old, common guns. You think that someone is going to buy such an imperfect gun simply because a price is set? Quite the contrary, friend. They buy because I allow them to spend what they want, and not a penny more.
      Check the results of the auctions that I recently posted from this site. I practice what I preach.
