She was looking for community, and Miguel might have responded to her statement of "I don't know how to fix this" with "Well, join the club", but he seemed like a confident leader on the surface. He ultimately doesn't *actually* know what he's talking about, but many kids are gonna be predisposed to clinging to figures of authority who welcome them when they lose their old support system. She was, in her own way, trying to protect Miles, even though she eventually understood that she was wrong.
Fun fact hobbie took 3 years to animate proving that they worked hard on this movie and put love and care into this movie edit ( hobbie is 16-19 years old)

I feel like it was hinted at when Miles asked about having his own bracelet thingy and Hobbie was like "why dont you build your own"? I was like WHAAAA. But then also earlier in the movie Miles mentioned he wanted to go to college to build what...machines that analyze the multiverses or something related to quantum physics so he's obviously pretty smart. The final clue in the trifecta for me was when he met Miles42 and all the tech that Miles42 had implied to me that since he didnt get bitten and become SpiderMan, he used his intelligence to become a villain...
I theorize, as I assume he has been in the society for awhile, he just subtlety learned how to make his watch. Like maybe he would peek at files or even study his own watch soon as he got it. So he basically learned how to make the watch before jumping ship.

I’m assuming it’s around 1976 onwards as that was the year punk really blew up in the U.K. His outfit also follows lace code (different coloured laces on combat boots have specific meanings), and that was really popular during the 70s and 80s. It’s fizzled out now so I think we can assume Hobie was operating during the late 70s to probably the early 80s.

I love how his introduction is meant to make you unsure about him, they hype him up as a possible love interest to Gwen to make Miles jealous. But when we actually meet Hobie, we realize he doesn't care about anything. He embodies punk rock nihilism. Then when Miles saves captain Singh when he "wasn't supposed to because of canon event", Hobie ends up seeing Miles as a huge deal. I think it's because he knew captain Singh was supposed to die, but Miles defied the system. Truly anti establishment stuff. He really represents the whole damn movie with the rebellious attitude theme, playing into how teenagers can't relate to their parents. What a coming age of story.
