I think Marner encapsulated the Leafs perfectly. They were mentally beaten before the series even started, because of all the teams they got, it was Boston, who has had their number in the playoffs for so many seasons now. You talk about Marner's performance, what about Auston Matthews?? What about the giveaway by Ryan Reaves for the first goal? And others are KILLING Samsonov for his incorrect decision making when shots are put at him, including the five hole. The whole team were not at the races last night, and I think they never showed up even before the beginning.
You nailed it with your comments. It's like the believed they were defeated before the playoff round with Boston even started - history repeating itself instead of the Leafs changing history. They are allowing themselves to be psyched out and the result will be failure if they don't start believing in themselves and playing like it.

The game made me check the calendar to see if I travelled back in time. It felt like I was watching a game in October. No drive, no heart, just going through the motions.
People talking about Mitch Marner. Did he play well, NO. Same could be said about the entire team, coaches and management. There is no system. If there is a system, the players are clueless what this system is.

The Florida series was a beating.
The crease is a mess the core is anything but scary and the defence is largely non existent.
It bothers me that home ice is not important to this group.
And the privileged few lower bowl fans are at best enimic.

Marner has 10 times the talent of Biz, but seems to be the lightning rod for the team, despite Tavares getting a pass, Nylander only concerned with staying bruise-free with a flush bank account, and Matthews no longer interested since his quest for 70 goals came up 1 goal short. When they lose this series, we can refer to this as the "summer of 69." Marner would thrive anywhere else in the league.
Lmao. If you want to compare Nylander and Marner over the last how many years in the playoffs then I'll just stop you at Nylanders contract at 7 million vs marners 11. And even then, Nylander does battle for pucks, drives the net and doesn't play scared around other players. Marner on the other hand took 11 million and will literally skate away from the puck if there is another player near. And if it's not that, then it's panic drop passes in the defensive zone or shooting it over the glass and taking a penalty. He's the only guy making 11 not willing to fight for the puck.....in fact, he's the only guy on the Leafs and probably the whole NHL who plays like that. His ego wrote checks his body can't cash. Every year he sinks the team when it matters most.
It is all on the Leaf Executives for not upgrading the Leaf Core 4. Mitch and Kessel and Kadri - might all win cups but not playing for these Leaf Executives. 😀

If the leafs were tight checking ,defensive and played playoff style all year they wouldn't be struggling like this.
Scotty Bowman would not have over played his star players down the stretch in an attempt to help one guy reach 70 goals. Hoisting the Cup should be the only goal for the team.

$11 million for great regular seasons and then zero incentive to compete in the playoffs but then again Sheldon Keefe is not a coach, he pampers his players, he's more a father figure than he is a coach, and they have no motivation to compete. Even Treliving though, of all the additions he made over the offseason and by trades this year he couldn't find a way to improve the defense because offense hasn't been our team's achilleas heel, their play in their own end is beyond pathetic and the goaltending is inconsistent and unreliable.

I know that it is a easy answer, but think about it. first it was management so they change it, then it was coaching so they changed it, than its no key players, so they changed it. and so on and so on. Nothing works. Once a team makes the playoffs, they need to beat in a series 4 other teams to win the Stanley Cup, let that sink in just a second. That is 1 more than the entire league back in the Early 60's, which was the last time a Toronto Maple Leaf team won a Cup. So what really needs to change is the Team! Sell Them, move them, change the home ice, Change the team colors. But just get rid of the franchise and bring in some thing completely new. How many NEW Franchises have won a Cup since the Leaf's last won? Almost all of the new franchise teams have. The last team to win was St. Louis and they were one of the first new teams to be added and even they finally won again Before the Leaf's. IT's the Franchise, Get rid of the entire Franchise. Right down to the door man , the janitor, hell even the bricks in the building. Its time to flood someone's back yard and start developing 5 year old's, who have no clue who the LEAFS WERE, they will never be again the team we all deserve. Thank you and Good Bye Leaf's.

Tavares was good in the playoffs until this year. And even still, as slow as he was this year, he still battled for pucks, and was still good for faceoffs.

Funny thing is he’s the only guy who scored for them even playing like shit. Where’s Tavares at? Paid just as much as Marner and even more useless. Matthews is the highest paid player in the league and only has 1 goal all series, and historically produces less than Marner does in the playoffs.
we'll hear all sorts of injury excuses when Bruins finally knock them out. Not good enough. Marner is a man child. All the core players have been coddled and paid as the very best in the world. Shanahan on down to Keefe and assistants need to be fired, Marner forced trade or just pay him and sit him. A rebuild is needed and first up is finding a goalie then building D then worry about the forward group.
