To the people who think they'll fail: They cannot mark more than Grade 9. This song here is professional level, and while that's very good for them, that doesn't mean you will. dw it'll come :) i was getting grade 6 tops in year 10 but my finale was grade 9. just listen to A LOT of music in genres that interest you and develop an understanding of musical ideas through that. My finale was a musical theatre piece (for one) and i listened to musical theatre relentlessly in that time. i'm not a keyboard player but i did it all on a midi keyboard just from knowing how notes work and setting boundaries like knowing the key really well. and hey you don't need to be amazing at comp if you can perform and write well. i promise you you don't ave to panic yet :)
Miss Alan thank you for the advice, slowly moving to year 11 now and Mocks are coming up. Hopefully I can put this advice to work but thanks for the advice anyway.😁
bravo. really nice comp. i got full marks in my comp too this year but mines nowhere near as refined as yours and i never even finished the lyrics or recorded any vocals, or even mastered and produced it. love this.
I wish you could have uploaded this a year earlier so I could have used this as my inspiration. Well its too late and written exam is tmr so good luck everyone
I feel like if I was given some free reign with my piece instead of my teacher being a bloody control freak I might have gotten a better grade (I got a 5 lmao) Like I released a full EP which was a whole lot better than my GCSE piece and I had half the equipment phahaha.
Hey, that was great im in year 9 and im considering music as a GCSE option. 1 question though, are you allowed to use pre recorded pieces on the software in your composition and can you record yourself playing your instrument and stick it on the track? Thanks
I've not long handed mine in, I wasn't allowed any pre-recorded work because it counted a plagiarism (not your own work), we even had to make our own lyrics and couldn't even use a random template!
This is crazy good! Also makes me wonder why I’m doing a degree in music, when I was 16 I couldn’t make something like this! This is like degree level shit 😭❤️
I start by listening to other songs and imagining what style I want to write in. For this I was inspired by Tom Misch, and wanted to write a pop song. I then chose my tempo, key and time sig and thought of an initial chord progression. I then thought of a melody and some lyrics to fit that melody. The rest came quite naturally. Also make sure your chorus contrasts the verse and contains a catchy melody to distinguish it from the rest of the song. Also, if you're really struggling for ideas, find a key and look at all the chords in it. Play around until you find a progression that you like. And then for the chorus, the simplest way to create contrast is to move to the relative minor (or major if verse is in a minor key) and switch up the drum beat (for a pop song). That's what I've done here. Hope that helps
The guitar & bass are both real instruments just because it's pretty much impossible to replicate them well digitally. But the drums, keyboard and organ are all recorded using a MIDI keyboard as it's an easy way to get pretty realistic sounding recordings.
Im currently doing my gcse composition and have restarted like 3 times i need help I am definately gonna fail my whole gcse. Definately gonna take inspiration from this peice tho its banging :)
J'adore le calme de cette compo :) Cela fait très chill, apaisant... Petit aspect négatif, on entend presque pas tous les petits détails musicaux... Il faudrait juste rehausser un peu l'intensité.
None of the tracks are pre-recorded. If you mean the green ones, that's just because it's a default garageband sound - but the actual parts were written and recorded by me using MIDI keyboard
How can you make a composition like this? So unfair, not because it is good which it is though, but because at my school we have to use Sibelius! So unfair! I still got full marks so it's fine but nice tune by the way, really vibin'
