My ex girlfriend and I used to share an online playlist on RUclips of our favorite music and liked listening to each other’s musical preferences. When we separated, I still kept said playlist, maybe because I couldn’t let go.
I kept adding songs, that mostly helped me cope and were about heartbreak. But I never opened the playlist, because I was scared of the feelings that would come up when listening to our used-to-be- songs.
Today, I took up my courage, in an attempt to finally close that chapter of my life. And I find this Song. Added by her. It’s the last message she will ever give me.

A few months after a breakup, hearing this song was so triggering. I'd feel it all over again. I'll cry. I couldn't function. So I had to do everything in my power to avoid this song, no matter how beautiful it was. That was 2019. Now that it's 2022, I listen to this song and I still remember it all and how it felt - but it no longer hurts the same way. This goes out to all of those who come back to this song and are in the process of letting go and healing.

I started dating my best friend of 7 years after refusing him for years in fear of it ending badly. I should have stuck to my gut feeling. He left for school out of town and progressively became distant until he ended things with me. I still cared for him and invited him to my graduation. He promised to come and never showed up. Months later he calls me crying spilling the truth about why he really left. ( For another female of course). Things were going badly with her and his family and he told me “ I called you because I know no matter what I do you’ll always be there for me” that whole phrase makes me sick to my stomach to this day. Sadly it’s true I love him just as much as I hate him. I listened and gave him the best advice I could. I never really told him about the way I really feel on the inside. But this song made me burst into tears and start writing a letter to him.
EDIT: I haven’t talked to his trash ass since and I don’t regret it at all. I’ve completely moved and found someone who LOVES me.🥺 Y’all this man pays my rent. Makes sure I eat. He sets time aside just for us and is always planning fun dates. His communication skills are through the roof. We don’t ever argue we always talk through it. He’s so gentle with me and so level headed. Mean while my ex is making fake snapchats just to get ahold of me😭 PLEASE DONT WASTE YOUR TIME LADIES. What one boy won’t do another MAN will.❤️

It’s unhealthy how much I fantasize of a better ending, to a story that now feels like a fantasy. Now all there is are memories, but when I look back on us it feels like a dream, and now all I can do is keep dreaming.

I used to ball my eyes out to this song in the process of getting over a break up in 2019.. every time I heard it my heart would feel like it’d break into a million pieces. It’s been a year and I’ve gone through stages in my life where I thought I was happy again, I thought I was over it.. Listened to this song thousands of times in 2018 during my first heartbreak. I cried, stayed in bed all day, and watched too many movies. It’s all a hazy memory now, but back then I felt so low. I played this song in the car for her on our first date November 3rd 2018. I had just discovered it and wanted to share it. I remember almost perfectly, her sitting in the passenger seat smiling really shyly, and the evening sky whirring past her right side as we drove down the highway. It was so picturesque; something I couldn't ever forget. And on the drive home from our crazy and perfect 6 hour long date all over the city, this song was on repeat all the way home. All I could think about was when I'd see her again, as I listened to the song over and over again. It felt Ironic at the time to listen to something so sad, but I didn't think of it much and just continued to listen because I really liked the melody and calm mood matching with the calm night drive.
After making several playlists over the years, I started to listen more carefully to the song. It began to feel emotionally powerful, so relatable in a sense that if I ever lost her, I'd be in the same spot as this song. Even though I was in the happiest relationship I'd ever been in, I felt I only wanted the best for her in the end. Despite the song's meaning becoming more heavy for me after a while, every time I listened to this song I could always remember the evening sky illuminating her beautifully soft face and smile. It felt so enlightening to remember her first soft smile with me.
After some time this song and several others were added to a number of our playlists. We both saw Umi at Tropicalia together, something we wanted to do for a while. A lot of Umi's music marked a period a new period of our lives. And this song marked a beginning of something new for me.
But it became a completely different song when things came to an end. Sitting here now, listening to the song that stayed with me throughout all that time, it means so much more to me now than it ever did before. Even though we're still friends, the memories we will make now, will never be the same as when we were together. It makes me wonder if she'll remember the things we did, the same way as I remember them. Some days I write little letters as if I was talking to her and reminiscing over the things we did. I know I'll never send them, but I always thank her for the memories we made. She changed me forever. She taught me how to love myself and live for the things I love.
I am forever grateful for her and wish I could have made as big as of an impact on her life as she did for me. All I can do now is hope she finds the happiness I couldn't give her.

I was in a 4 year relationship that ultimately left me with depression, but in the end, I learned to love myself more and put myself first and properly love myself. Now I'm in a relationship with my favorite person and if we were to break up, I wouldn't feel depressed or overly hurt, because I put myself first and I've learned that it's okay to break away from people.
Rosie Oliver you want to be with someone as in love with you as you are with them. If you can sense it then he’s probably doing things intentionally to make you feel this way. But if you haven’t talked to him about this recent drawback thing he’s been doing then that last parts irrelevant. Cause he could just be getting comfortable which then you gotta make sure you don’t allow him to do so. That’s when he starts to ‘think’ you don’t require as much effort to ‘maintain.’ Which if he starts to neglect you then I’d say he’s dead weight. This was the first UMI song I ever listened to, and it helped me keep my head above the water when I was in a dangerous place.(TW for those who are depressed or s**cidal(also heads up for the essay lol))
During the summer before my senior year of high school, I was visiting my cousins out in California. I had recently been diagnosed with anxiety and depression, so I spent a lot of time reevaluating everything I had ever said and done. I felt hopeless, like I didn’t have much left to be proud of or to look forward to. I was in the middle of publishing and editing a book, but I was steadily losing faith that it would turn out well before it was scheduled to hit shelves. Beyond that, I had stopped taking care of myself; my hair was long and tangled, I never let myself process my emotions, and I only used therapy as a chance to scream into the void while a specialist nodded from behind a camera.
While I was in California, my family decided to take a camping trip to the Sequoias. I’d only been camping for a day, and even then I had to leave before we spent the night, so this was a new (and frankly terrifying) experience for me. We set up camp in the middle of nowhere with no signal, no easy way back home, and no discernible landmarks save for latrines and a community center. The park was beautiful, don’t get me wrong, but I knew I might hit rock bottom here.
I had been struggling with suicidal thoughts for years at this point, and without a quick and easy connection to friends who knew what I was going through, I saw so many possible ways to shuffle off the mortal coil.
One night, my cousin and her friends laid down in the tent they shared with my sister and I. We had just spent a whole night coming home late after a long day at the lake, and we were all tired and giddy. After a quick game of Cards Against Humanity, we all settled down and stared at the roof of our tent. The chirping crickets and the midnight sky, visible through the thin cloth of the tent, provided a calming atmosphere to an otherwise hectic evening. However, a bunch of people had started farting, so everyone was either giggling or grumpy(okay, I was the only grumpy one, but that’s not super important). So, in order to soften the mood, my cousin turned on “Remember Me.”
Thanks to a parade of video essays I had watched in the months before that day, I was in one of those “overanalyze every work of art you come across” phases. When I settled down to listen to the words, I think the refrain made me realize that if I died, people would be at my funeral. Family and friends would be there, honoring my legacy, whatever that really meant. In the eyes of the world I would become another statistic, but in the eyes of the people I cared about? Most of them would lose someone they cared about, for reasons I still can’t quite grasp if I’m being honest.
So, I redoubled my efforts to stave off my destructive thoughts. I remembered the people I cared about and the goals I wanted to achieve, the legacy I wanted to leave behind. The people I wanted to help, to provide for and pay back for all the good they’ve done for me. It wasn’t a perfect solution; I still struggle with these thoughts and downward spirals on a regular basis. But it’s kept me alive for this long, and I’ve gotten better at keeping my head above the water.
All of this is to say that there’s a chance I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for UMI. I’ve slowly been listening to more and more of your music, and as my life has grown and evolved in all kinds of ways-college, romantic relationships, book deals, new friends- “Remember Me” has kept me grounded and reminded me what I’m here for. So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you, UMI. Thank you for everything.

I play this whenever I'm feeling low and it reminds me of my ex fiance who passed during child birth 4 years ago. I can't get over the situation up to now. I was depressed for a long time and it still troubles me because I feel guilty and bad since we made the baby together. I still couldn't bring myself to dating but I met this girl who is changing me day by day because she also went through something similar (we met through a therapist friend). We just got married like a month ago.

I remember listening to this song, drenched in tears when I was still idiotically in love with my ex in 2019 the first half of it before I got over her a few months afterwards. I have never had a break up that hurt me that much before, but luckily this year, 2020. I got a really great cute girlfriend who understands me and as well as I understand her, so I hope things last between us because we are still learning about each other.
Luckily this song is just something I enjoy listening to now, but I gotta admit that it used to feel so much deeper when I was going through it and it felt so much more beautiful when I was heart broken, but it's over now. So, for those of you who are going through what could be considered the worse stage of your emotional health rn over a break up: Give yourself time to recover and during that time learn on how to be a better person- not to show off yourself in a way that would make your ex regret their decision on breaking up with you, but for yourself and so you can be better in your next relationship and a generally cooler more understanding person to be around to those around you.
It's so easy for people to go cold during these times, to try and block out their feelings, but I promise you that that does nothing but make you a more toxic person to be around and could smear out into your next relationship if you aren't being conscious of your own emotions.
You will never be able to learn about how to identify your feelings, if all you do is ignore them until you can't tell what you feel anymore.
If you need to cry, then cry for as long and hard as you need to before you got out there again. Man or woman, fuck whatever anyone else thinks of you. Find people or someone you can really talk to and be yourself with completely and spend time with them. Learn new skills or find new things you enjoy spending hours on, try something new. Do all of the self care for yourself as only for yourself, something gradual and not over night so along the way so you can figure out who you want to become in the future, because if you live life with a fixed mindset, you're going to always be the same. Let it make you become a better person that treats others well and you'll eventually find someone who will grow to love you for you. Consistently strive to be like the person you wish you had, because in the end, all you will have is yourself truly.
