We got done again for our plates! Number plate holders to the rescue!

  • Once more, legislation has changed.
We've had the 4D plates on our vehicle for 6 years! Yes, this very same pair of number plates was first installed to our Blue MK8 Fiesta ST Pre Facelift in June 2018.
In the past 3 weeks, we've been pulled over 3 times as police now have a "New Piece of Technology" which apparently makes our number plates unreadable in certain lights. What's really interesting is we made the plates in house and all 10 letters (C3UKS x2) were cut from the exact same black acrylic sheet, yet according to their camera only the "UKS" are unreadable on both plates.
When explained, we were accused of applying a film tint to these letters - which i can assure you we have not. On all 3 occasions we received a £100 on the spot fine. No evidence, no notification that this new tech was in force or even a real idea of what crime we had actually commited - The only thing we were told for sure was that the new binoculars could not see the letters!
Disgrace, as a result we've gone back to OEM spec number plates because im fed up of being fisted by our public servants.
To do so we used the ford performance number plate holders

Surprising that they bother, looking at the absolute state of some plates on the road and the fact that there are plenty of online sources that provide "road legal" plates but require absolutely zero supporting documentation to prove vehicle keeper/ownership.
Got some new plates for my T6 last year, completely bog standard and road legal, but the online place I got them from didn't even ask for a V5. Or has the law changed?
They also sold all sorts of of other type plates which I'm sure are only "show plates" but they know damned well they're selling them to road going cars.

The DVLA does not recognise the term “Show Plate” so any number plate that is made has to be legal. Even if your customer signs documentation to state they’ll only use it at static events etc if you supply it as a dealer you are liable!
This is why we knocked number plates on the head, we supplied a show plate, the customer ticked the box acknowledging it was a show plate only then when they received the plate, realised they couldn’t use it on the road and reported us to the DVLA.
With the constant changes to the law and police technology it’s a minefield and something which can lead to heavy fines and even prison time, so we opted to leave that part of the industry
