Great video. Lovely to see the Island trains again. We used to holiday in Sandown and caught the train from Ryde Peir Head after getting off the IOW ferry (Sealink I think). Always remember the rough ride from Ryde!. Thanx for posting this.

Superb stock! Used to get one on the Piccadilly in the late 1970s now and again.

I Have also driven these trains on train simulator 2013, I find the line short only 9 miles long it is however, amazing that these trains still work after 70 years of service the top speed allowed is 45 MPH and there is no AWS on the lines!! and yuo have 2 trains to choose from.

@MegaL14M, the reason they have not done this is because of the tunnel between Ryde Epslanade and St John's Road is no high enough, the trackbed in Ryde Tunnel was raised in 1967 to reduce flooding and decrease gradients.

I always wondered why the 1983 tube stock was entirely scrapped, instead of saving a few and using them to replace the 1938 stock on this line.

Been on this a couple of times, don't think I've ever seen a train roll as much as they do at speed! Not sure whether its the train or the track, either way its rough :D

Funding has now been granted to refurbish all these old 1938 veterans into "heritage" red livery. Unit 004 was completed in December 07 and unveiled on January 18th 2008.. just two days ago

There are 2 trains an hour, but due to parts of the route being single line they run with a gap of 41 minutes then 19 minutes throught the day, i have herd that they are meant to be putting another passing loop back in which would allow an 30 minutes service.

i've always wondered how they haven't upgraded the trains to something like 455s or 158/9s...

Up until now, it's always been the restrictions of the tunnel just south of Ryde Esplanade which has dictated the use of smaller trains since the raising of the track through there in the 60's, hence old London Underground stock since the demise of steam. Now though, they reckon they've managed to fix clearances so that the larger ex-District Line D78 Stock can fit through...we await the line's re-ooening with interest!

That Dinosaur livery didn't suit these old ladies. Thank heavens they're back in LT red. Sadly it looks like they'll be replaced by trams, possibly diesel at that, or so I'm told by a friend over there on the Island. Drove their bigger brothers, the co/cp stock, back in the day, PROPER underground trains, as remarked below. WS Graff-Baker must be spinning in his grave.
