Watching this as a fellow addict in recovery from heroin/fentanyl and meth. I will have 9 months clean in 7 days, universe willing. Currently living in an Oxford house in the Denver metro area. I grew up on the east coast, but last year on August 27th, I decided that maybe after ten years of active addiction it would be a wise decision to move far away, which I did by myself entirely. As a chronic relapser, I knew that I really had to get the fuck away from all the people places and things that trigger me in CT. Moving across the country by myself was the best decision I’ve ever made. I did end up having stressful things happen with the friend I moved here to live with, and that is what lead me to use again after having a few weeks to a month clean. It really took me ending up homeless and in psychosis (due to having bipolar 1) before I gathered the courage to tell my mom that I feel like I’m barely alive, I’m depressed/manic and suicidal, and also in active addiction once again. I called with the intention of informing my mom of the situation, telling her I’m calling around to detoxes and rehabs, and hoping that she would be willing to support me while I’m in inpatient getting help. For the second time.. now I am here today, a functioning member of society working full time taking care of infants in a prestigious private school. I feel blessed today. 10/18/19 🖤

My parents used to let me drink beer when I was a teenager (it was the late 70s/early 80s). By the time I was in college, my motto was "If you're not wasted, the day is." The legal drinking age in Texas where I'm from was 18 at the time, and we had a bar on campus, as well as numerous bars just off campus...and I could be found in one of those pretty much every night, or at an on-campus or off-campus party. I never SAID stupid things when I was drunk, but I did DO a lot of stupid things. After graduating college, things hadn't changed much. I worked mostly nights, and my co-workers and I would hit the local clubs after work three or four nights a week. Five years later, I met the woman that I would spend the next almost 19 years with. She also loved to party and she introduced me to weed. We went out drinking almost nightly, then came home and smoked until we fell asleep. By the time I reached my early 30s, overcoming the hangovers became harder and harder for me and I started slowing down, but my partner didn't. Also, I either was unaware or unwittingly ignoring that she had also developed addictions to harder drugs, most notable meth. While I never stopped drinking or smoking altogether, I did cut way back...but she never did until her health started to deteriorate. Although she cleaned up the meth addiction, the damage had already been done and she ultimately died of congestive heart failure in 2010. Through my depression after this, I got back into heavy drinking for a while, but I did quit the drug use and haven't even had any weed in ten years. I eventually just slowed down to the point where I am now. I will drink liquor or beer socially, and still usually have wine available to myself at home, but my alcohol intake is down to two or three drinks a week. I don't think I could ever quit it completely.

All of what you've stated you've gone through AND overcome is a huge sign that you ARE capable and strong enough to be able to quit completely. You've already proven that. All you have to do is tell yourself that and give it to yourself. Most stories I've heard of people in similar situations don't end up cleaning themselves up at all, because they tell themselves that they can't. So you should be proud of your accomplishments.

I didn’t really realize I had issues with sobriety until watching this video. I started drinking about two years ago and now I have about two glasses of wine a night or I smoke weed (mostly both) . I can’t remember a time in the past year I’ve been two nights in a row without doing either. I never take it to an excessive amount but I’ve realized I do it to tune out. It also greatly effects my mood/ productivity the day after. I don’t like this behavior and I feel inspired to take a break and challenge myself to be sober. I know this will help me achieve growth in my life. Thank you for speaking out

i turned 18 in june and have never drunk alcohol. to me it just encompasses negativity, addiction and violence. i never want to drink it but wow, people are *adamant* in trying to get me to!! my friends sometimes say “we need to get you drunk one time” and i’m just like no lol. to me, it’s not funny. even my mum has said stuff like “i’m sure in a few years you’ll be going out and drinking!” and again, i’m like no. i’d waaaay rather be cozy in bed with a book than going out and drinking. despite everyone saying i will, i know my path and that it doesn’t involve alcohol😊 thank you so much for talking about this harmony, i think it will resonate with a lot of people and help them realise they are not alone!!🥰🥰

Gosh same!! I’m 19 and I just never saw any appeal to drink at all whatsoever. Sure my friends occasionally drink but they never pressure me to. I don’t think I’ll ever drink because I’ve seen how it affected my sister and my father, and they just morph into another person. Of course, I hate seeing that, but at least I know that I won’t be inclined to believe/want that sort of “vibe” if that makes sense?

    • @aryasafira93

I'm 26 (turning 27 in September). I've NEVER been drunk or anything near drunk at all. I've tried alcohol three times (just a sip), but I hate the taste of it. For some reason "everyone" in Norway (I'm Norwegian) expect people to drink alcohol, and if you don't, they say: "Oh, but you haven't found your drink yet". NO! That's not it. I. DON'T. WANT. TO. DRINK! I'm totally OK with people drinking alcohol from time to time, and I won't force them to go sober, so why can't people do the same with me? Accept that I don't want alcohol in my life, and it's not because I'm pregnant or driving a car, I don't like the taste and I (personally) don't see the point. People have stopped pestering me about it, but that's probably because they've got partners and soon their own children and so on.

I am not addicted to any substances, but recently I've been spending all of my time watching youtube and browsing social media and not doing anything else. So in a way I'm addicted to social media. I did some tarot card spreads to try to figure out how to help this, but I couldn't really understand them very well. Then I just saw this video. A lot of the things you said, while not speaking about the same things, not only relate to my current circumstance but also line up ridiculously well with the tarot readings I did. I wasted soo many years binge drinking 2-3 times a week with my friends at the clubs and bars, and I was soo emotionally unstable. I was giving toxic people all of my energy and I was spending soo much money rip. When you and Melanie Murphy went sober from drinking, I really admired it and I really connected with what you had to say about it. The last time I drank I made an ass of myself and I really realized how I have a hard time noticing when I've had enough to drink. I come from a looooong line of male alcoholics. As far back as anyone can remember, every male on my father's side has been a drunk. I started drinking at fourteen. I was good at it. Born to it. I came home from work one day when I was twenty-two, I opened the frig and said to myself, "I really need a beer." And when I said 'need' and 'beer' in the same sentence, I closed the frig and never drank again. I'm fifty-five now and still dry.

I loved this video so much.
I'm from Germany and drinking is kind of "normal" here, just like you said. When quarantine started I kind of started to struggle a bit more with alcohol and using it as a coping mechanism, because i really lost my routine. At first I liked not having to go to school and just being at home, but I got basically nothing done and my mental health got worse, I felt really disconnected, drank a lot in the evenings and felt hoffible in the morning. Then suddenly, I don't know what pulled that trigger for me, I thought I really don't want to do this anymore and stopped. It was and still is tough at times, but I'm glad I took action and didn't let it progress further. My dad's an alcoholic and we're quite similar when it comes to some things, so I guess I kind of got that trait from him. I think he's slowly starting to recover, which makes me feel really at ease. It was always so horrible to see him getting totally drunk every evening. I usually only see him every other weekend, but now that I got holidays I'm with him for two weeks and monday-thursday he has max one Ort two beers and is so much more like himself. It feels so great to see him not completely drunk in the evening haha.
God I'm sorry for waffling like this, I just kinda felt the need to write this down.
Also since I stopped drinking for the most part (I will probably still drink with friends sometimes, but just for fun) i did Start feeling a little better and more connected to spirituality again. Especially today was a really good day. I usually have pretty intense mood swings, but today I felt good the whole day.
If you're struggling I just want tolet you know, such unhealthy coping mechanisms might work for a while, but they're no long time solution. You're strong, you survived up till now and that's such a great thing. You can do this, you can overcome anything you want to overcome with work and time. I believe in you, you got this. 🌻💓🌱

This is perfect timing. About a year ago I was going through a rough patch working two jobs (plus freelancing and pet sitting) and doing 60+ hour weeks for five months. I turned to daily drinking to deal with pain/stress. I thought when my life returned to normal I would have no problem quitting. BIG MISTAKE. My life is thankfully much more chill now, but I’ve tried quitting twice and have never even made it to two weeks. This is my third try, I’m on day 2.

I've been sober for 4 years. I'm an addict though and I was really bad on vodka drinking close to or more than a half gallon a day so I was also physically addicted. I also was a heroin addict. My journey was much different than yours and I needed NEEDED the help of AA and a maintenance program for the opiates. If I had stopped earlier my story could have been much more like yours. People don't need to reach their ultimate bottom to where they're selling their body on the street like I was, or physically dependant on alcohol to the point that they need it to function and go to work so they lose jobs and everything they ever loved or held dear.
I still related so much to your story. Even in my teens I was a binge drinker and blacked out a couple times a week from the time I was 14. But still there were some calmer times where I think things were fun, but that's the issue. Our minds will keep telling us that it's fun, even though those good times were totally outweighed by bad times. I also felt a deep connection to myself as a pree teen when I got sober,to before I had replaced all of my hobbies with drinking. I used to be really good at painting and music. I got back into guitar and now I exercise every day. I have real friends and family. One of the best things is that people in my life can trust and count on me

I am so excited you are speaking about this topic so detailed and open! And yaih - go you! Growing up in southern Germany, binge drinking also was just something sooo normal. My teens and early twenties were very much fueled by alcohol - even though I was studying to become a counselor and psychologist working with addicts. In my adult life I often had the feeling that I wanted to stop drinking (not binge drinking anymore but definitely having wine on a regular basis, especially if I am stressed out), but I never managed for more than 2 - 3 months (except of course for my pregnancy, when I wouldn't touch a drop). This definitely gave me new motivation, to give it another try. Thanks girl! :)

I am so happy this video popped up on my feed thank you! 🖤 it's like the universe was leading me this way, I have been thinking about going sober for the longest time but as many have already said in the comments, I feel the pressure to drink and the pressure to fit in. I'm from Ireland and our relationship with alcohol as a whole is not healthy. I get this anxiety like no other sweep over me the next day after I drink. I feel depressed and consumed by my own thoughts and obsessive overthinking!! This is the main reason for wanting to go sober as it's just not worth it for me to feel like this and put myself through that for 'just the one'. just want to say thank you for this video and for the tips it's finally made me take a step in the right direction and stop feeling the pressure to drink.

I’m glad you realized your problems quickly. It is not easy to admit you have a problem and then go through the motions to stop it. I had a drinking problem for years. I got drunk on nearly a daily basis. I knew it was a problem and I felt guilty every time I got drunk but I became dependent on it as a way to relax and never truly wanted to stop. It has been almost a year since I had my last drink. I hope I can continue this path.
Cutting the alcohol has helped me to work through my problems and focus on self improvement.

I agree. Cannabis saved my life for a time, I never smoked when I was younger, but I did start 2 years ago. Right around a time I had severe depression and was suicidal and self harming, unmedicated. And through those months of that depression cannabis absolutely helped. I was able to sleep, able to eat, able to survive. However coming out of the depression I had a reliance on it, and realized it led me to doing other things not so great. Not saying it's the ultimate gateway drug but... ~○~ so eventually my life situation changed and I wasnt able to smoke anymore and it has helped my spirituality so much more. Then I met my fiance who doesnt smoke or drink at all, and when I feel weak he encourages me. I know in the long term it'll be better for me, even being tempted to drink at my age now and never been a drinker. Now just have to work on the occasional disposable nicotine vape here and there. Thanks for the encouragement harmony, you can be sober and find heightened spirituality in that as well. °~●~°

i love this. i have recently been made painfully aware how i use alcohol to cope with my issues but it always ends up with me crying myself to sleep. i was talking with my best friend a couple of weeks ago completely drunk and sad, and he finally snapped and told me he was done with this same song and dance. it was such a punch to the gut because i realised that i was still falling into the same mental trap of being so depressed and wanting to be depressed... we made up, we're good now, and his intention with that was to snap me out of that same state and realise that my depressive episodes affect more than just myself. i drank a couple of nights this week and i had a really fun time!! no sad times, but i woke up yesterday with my body feeling like such shit... i just can't do it anymore, i can't get drunk anymore. my body can't handle it. i want to go sober for 99% of the time, and maybe on special occasions, have a glass of wine (i'm looking forward to a glass of wine on my birthday in october!), but we shall see how all of that turns out. :o) thank you for your tips!! i've been changing my daily habits these last couple of weeks and journaling has had such a huge positive impact on me. i finally feel like i'm connecting with my spirituality again and even last night- i dreamed for a second time in the last week! i've hardly had any dreams in the last 2 years since i went down the rabbit hole of depression and drinking. i feel like i'm connecting so much more and i feel so incredibly happy.

Yay! I'm the 1k like & 200th comment. My OCD is so comfortable here. The main thing that has helped me to stay sober is to be able to recognize & avoid any triggers. I tried to hangout with one friend one time & found out what I can & can't do. What does bother me is when I am totally fine somewhere, but then the friend I was with Is uncomfortable because they are drinking alone & then they don't want to hang out again. You do have to give up many friends. It is great if you can help your friends along the way, but friends will come and go regardless, it is worth it.

I don't even abuse substances anymore, but this video has helped me realize that I do still do something similar. It's not nearly as physically unhealthy, but it is a vice and it is taking much time away from me that I could be using instead to take better care of myself and to connect more truly to myself. I could literally replace the word alcohol and substance with my own escape, and I think that's important to note. This video is more meaningful and versatile than I think folks probably realize. Thank you Harmony, I really needed this

I know I'm a bit late, but I would like to tell this to you: I'm proud of you!
I know I'm just a random person, but as far as I know, it's always good to read and hear that what we are doing is good and we are on the right way. Thinking over what we have done and why we have done those things is an important step on the road to understand ourselves and be aware of our "weak" side.
When I was in my teenage years, I becamse a computer game addict. My little sister was born, and she sucked the energy out of my parents, so they didn't have time and energy for me at all. They sometimes didn't even realized that I came home from school. (even if I said Hi to them) I became a ghost, and at 13-14 years old, it made me depressed. I run into online games, especially MMORPGs, because the people there cared about me. Not much, but it was enought not to kill myself. My grades fell down, I gained a lot of weight (20-25kg, about 55-65 lbs) which became a problem between my mom and me. I totally closed up, and the realization took me a long time, and the fight was endless and desperate. Also, my health went garbage, I became insuline intolerant with high blood pressure and my hormones jumped upside down.
I'm almost 30, and I still suffer from this addiction time to time, but it got easier since my partner helps me keeping balance of gaming and real life. And also, finding what am I good in and finding life goals helps a lot.
So keep your head up, focus on the actions or hobbies what makes you happy but not poisoning you!
    Love from Hungary

I’ve been sober for two months now so it’s nice to hear your experience too! :) Binge drinking is something I’ve done throughout my life but I’d always explain away the issue considering it is pretty normalised in my country too. I used to use it as a crutch for social anxiety, or to uplift me from depression - of course, it always inevitably worsened my mental state in the hangover stages. I’ve definitely been feeling happier and more myself. Personally, it was a bad habit I needed to kick in order to feel more in control.

looooved this talk. i'm 25 and i hate how much alcohol, weed, and other drugs have become a part of my generation's culture...to the point where you're judged/seen a prude if you don't partake. i'm someone that has a very healthy relationship with alcohol - i will drink maybe twice a year - a glass of wine at christmas and perhaps a mimosa once or twice in the summer. but i don't love to drink and i find it very expensive! as for weed/other drugs though, i truly have no interest in them. it's an expensive habit, and to be honest, i have no desire to ingest something that makes me lazy and hungry! i know some people use it to calm down and there's nothing wrong with that but can we stop shitting on people who stay away from it?! we need to normalize sobriety more! thank you for this harmony x
