Great question. If you are doing it on metals like brass or aluminum, there will be no worry of rust. However, if you did it on say chromed steel for instance, you'd need to rechrome the metal. I did have an idea that I may try at some point that I thought would be cool. That is to engrave through chrome into raw steel, and then using cold blue to blue the engraving. That would be a nice look I think. And since chrome cannot be cold blued it would only turn the engraved areas black while adding rust prevention.

I found the heads on a 96ci are softer aluminum than the cylinders. Once my bit got to the fins below the head it does cut into it as easy. fun project though
The Harley heads are a different type of aluminum than the cylinders, so that is why one was easier. But as long as you take your time it is certainly doable. Thanks for watching! I'd love to see some pics of your final result!

I heard doing this to cylinder fins & head fins will actually help with cooling...It's supposed to create more surface area & air flow turbulence... Anybody know if this is a fact? I could see it possibly helping when riding but not sitting still.
I've heard the same thing. I think it's more of a selling point for the companies to do it though. It does create more surface area but I can't see it substantially changing the engine temperature. I could be wrong though. But I would like to see the data after testing.
@@ThrashTestDummies Just had an idea, to do this to the fins on an aluminum heat sink on a computer CPU and see if it runs any cooler....If it made a noticeable difference in cooling then it'd probably do the same on a engine...I'll never get around to it though. I have a little cheap 2 stroke motorized bike engine. I might dremel the stock head for practice & see if I notice any difference.

In this video I just used vht low gloss black. But you can do it over powder coat or any other coating that will show a contrast between the color and the cut metal.

I do plan on doing a review on various products that take oxidation off of aluminum parts that cannot be polished soon though. Not just for content but also because I am genuinely curious.

A high heat clear coat should work fine

The real diamond cuts are done on 2 angles which creates the diamond spackle.

How to prevent cuts from rusting?
The fins are aluminum and won't rust.
Do different bits make it shine different in light or look different the cut
And powder coat first : or cut then. Powder coat and powder coat clear ?? Guess powder coat heads cut then powder coat clear bake look awesome
