      +Patrick Keating I would kill to get a game of ANY genre that had the same graphics as starcraft 1. I love this art style and i'm BITTER that there is NO OTHER GAME that shares this style of graphics.. It's kinda a cross of the old retro pixelated stuff and 3d.

      +Jsp P5 Taunus This is EXACTLY what I've been thinking! If a complete graphics overhaul were done with SC2 such that we would get a 2015 version of what kind of leap BROOD WAR engine was in 1998 would impress me a lot, I'm talking extremely real 3D models with much more in scale buildings and units. when I first played sc2 I thoughtto myself... I'm playing WC3...

      @VTheC 10 лет назад +6

      Starcraft is a whole different league then SC2.. It's better, SC2 has been nerfed for dummies.. I don't know how someone can get 300 amp with sc2 without moving units needlessly or raising and lowering depots. Sc1 is needs over 150 apm.

    • @jamesp811
      @jamesp811 10 лет назад +22

      V TheC
      SC2 beats BW in every conceivable way as a game. The "dumbing down" you refer to has simply removed unncessary APM.
      Any time there's an action in a game like this you would always take, automating it improves the game. Not automating it is stupid.
      Having to manually tell every single spawned worker to start harvesting? Stupid. Fixed in SC2.
      Limiting control groups to 12 units? Stupid. Fixed in SC2.
      Casters all casting at the same time, instead of one at a time? Stupid. Fixed in SC2.
      Just three examples where SC2 improved upon BW's broken user interface. SC2's interface is still seriously broken in some ways, just not as badly (I, for one, would like to see a command on each vespene structure to pull three workers from the mineral line rather than having to chase the little bastards down with the mouse. Making processes like that intentionally difficult is stupid)
      If Starcraft and Starcraft 2 are, in fact, strategy games, the more you do to remove useless APM (and thus useless 'twitch' kind of actions) the better the game is. If you intentionally make the interface as hard to fight as the opponent, then the game is not by any means "strategy" anymore of any kind. BW was a twitch game, same as Quake. There's nothing wrong with that, but no one should be under the illusion that this somehow constitutes a strategy game.

    • @trinut3760
      @trinut3760 10 лет назад +4

      The improvements I agree on but starcraft is a strategy game no matter how you speak of it. Relying on more twitch elements in the art of multitasking makes it more of a strategy game than having every little thing automated.

    • @HrHaakon
      @HrHaakon 10 лет назад +3

      Jamie Lee
      No, not really. It just means that there are more places you have to get good to get anything done.
      SC2 is very macro focused though. You have to scout, and you have to choose what to do and then do it correctly. You don't need the same sort of insane micro you needed in BW.
      This makes the game more accessible, that is, easier to start with. That's a good thing, as long as the skill ceiling is very high. Which it still is.
      You can discuss the precise level of automation that should be done, but I think we can all agree that it should be more than what was allowed in Brood War.

    I use to watch Sc2 games from time to time, I am a total noob in Sc so I don't even understand everything but enjoyed it a lot. This match was the first professional Sc1 match I've seen and I'm stunned. I am aware that this match was an exceptional but after watching a few more Sc1 games I finally understand what people are on about. Sc2 brought a lot of features that made it more pleasant for me to play, but Sc1 seems to have way more micro which is awesome.
    Also great commentary, HD! Thanks for explaining things to people that come from Sc2.

    you do so much better a job as an announcer than the guys they've got doing it in the championships.
    ps: *Thank You* for mentioning the zerglings, they always seem to get ignored in commentary despite connecting with the zerglings being the big goal in a ground composition: zerglings actually deal a crazy amount of damage per cost, a single zergling out-damages an ultralisk at most facing angles (different attack speeds at different angles because animations and pauses change a bit occasionally gaining/dropping a delay frame), they are by far the best unit in the game for quickly taking down structures and any other vulnerable target. an ultralisk's biggest job is to soak damage and space out splash, so you get this funny thing where siege tanks are one of the good ways to kill ultras but ultras are still a counter to tanks...not nearly as much of one as zealots but still.

RTS, FPS, you name it, and the gameplay is sluggish and unintuitive, but not SC/BW, it was perfection from the start baby! Also, it had a mindblowingly awesome campaign story that just dominates the story they came up with for SC 2. I like SC 2 gameplay, and even the campaign to some extent, but the writing was really poor compared to SC/BW, imo anyway.

  • @Smartacus98
    @Smartacus98 8 лет назад +58

    Seems a bit more strategic and tactical than SC2. SC2 became so fast paced and streamlined that it almost stifled the thought process and creativity behind an RTS, it essentially became a dexterity based build order rehearsal simulator. While the fast paced nature can make it exciting at times it is a lot less tense.
    I mean think about it: "Sun Tzu said, 'macro hatch 14 seconds late at 16 supply? git gud bronze scrub." It's barely even strategy anymore, it is just who can play a build order slightly more precisely.
    Some kind of blend of the too would be good, Brood War is a little slow for a lot of casual players and the AI, control mechanics, pathfinding and such have not aged well. Assuming, of course, Starcraft ever gets any sequels and RTS's are actually popular again at some point.

    • @Alientcp
      @Alientcp 8 лет назад +4

      I highly doubt it. While yes, the rithm of both games is very different, both are very reliant on dexterity.
      In sc1 dexterity was like 90% of the game since it was mighty hard controlling all those units, plus the unit production.
      The only thing Sc2 did was to remove some dexterity in unit control and to put more focus on the pace and to make strategic decisions more meaningful (its not that they were meaningless in bw, but you could rely more on micro to diminish the returns).
      And making it fast paced do not remove the tension, its quite the opposite, or at least in the same level, you have even less time to react, so you have to be on your toes all the time.
      Its different, way too different experience, but none is lesser than the other. And its not like bw was very forgiving about timings.

    • @Smartacus98
      @Smartacus98 8 лет назад +6

      Alientcp Dexterity moving units around is not the same as dexterity in executing a precise build order. In SC I, there was dexterity in terms of clicking fast, but also in terms of responding to your opponent. You couldn't blob your units in a death ball and roll them across the map as the mechanics wouldn't let you, which meant you had to treat units as groups and have more hands on command of actual engagements. In SCII, commanding units is secondary to making units as efficiently as possible. Which means that there is less emphasis on responding to threats by moving your units around to counteract an attack (always different in every situation) and the greatest challenge is making sure your build order is perfect enough to be able to constantly pump out units at a much faster rate than you could in BW so that losses can be easily replaced (standardised for every map, ultimately just muscle memory).
      Losing a group of tanks had much worse implications in BW than it did in SC2, which means that when commanding units and meeting a threat you had to think more carefully about exactly what you are going to do, there is a thought process behind it as well as the quick reactions required to execute good micro. In SCII it's pretty much all macro, or at least macro takes much great precedent over tactical command. "Oh that group of units is dead? Oh well, I can just instinctively press 3 buttons to ensure that they are replaced by the time he is next able to attack.
      This isn't to say that being able to command many units at once, army hotkeys and grouping production buildings are bad things, they streamline the game. Nor am I suggesting that SCII's more responsive and intuitive AI doesn't allow for more intricate macro, just that the way the game is paced means that while these things can allow for a more intense strategic match, players end up with the mentality that precision in muscle memory is more important than actual strategic thought.

    • @KhasAdun1990
      @KhasAdun1990 8 лет назад +3

      Actually Artosis said it's more strategic. If the enemy attacks with something you're not prepared for in SC1, you may be able to micro or perform some kind ot trick to get out of it, but if ithappens in SC2 you die, because you just weren't prepared for it, meaning the strategy has a lot more importance, but I prefer the way Broodwar allowed for people to pull off what seemed impossible, that's why I was so amazed when I first found out about professional Starcraft, they were doing things I'd never seen anyone do to a game before, SC2 has less of that going on.

    • @Smartacus98
      @Smartacus98 8 лет назад +4

      KhasAdun Micro is still a part of strategy though, strategy is a blend of logistics and tactics. You may be the best battle commanders in history, but if your army has no supply lines, access to reinforcements, equipment etc. you can't win a war, even if you win battles (Hannibal for example). Or, you could have perfectly good logistics and field a larger army but be defeated in battle by a smaller force due to inferior tactics (Darius III).
      SCII is pretty much all about logistics and has less emphasis on tactics, it's essentially all about having the fastest-executed build order.

      xcoponent I can do well against the computer, but i always mass produce Goliaths, because they are effective at both ground and air ^^ And mass producing something is so much easier than fiddling around with different strategies. Just send them all in and let them do their job ^^

    • @xcoponent
      @xcoponent 8 лет назад +1

      Yeal, that's good too, you're right it depends on whats coming at you! I use supply houses to bury me in an Area. If you build a solid wall, the Protess can't get through, they need lots of Dragons, 1 marine behind the wall kills all of the Zealots. So many Zealots a Dragon can't get close enough to shoot at wall, against computer. easy victory against Protoss. But the Zergs get through unless you build a quick tank. Yeal, I like a 1 marine defense, until I make up my mind on strategy!

      When its 2 equally skilled players, and its zerg vs terran, zerg will win most of the time because zerg has a faster build time and higher DMG + attack speed when comparing zerglings to marines/firebats for example. That's where the term 'to zerg' came from. By the time the enemy is building their first attackers, zerg is already on the way to wipe out.

    What I love about Starcraft is that every units stay true to their lore. Zerg is swift and numberless, Terran packs firepower but lacks mobility, and Protoss is tough as hell. In SC2, we have Terran out number zerg, Protoss units felt like flowers, and zerg units being slow except on creep!

      Sc1 is much more about smaller groups of units fighting through out the map,the game has a lot more emphasis on positioning,you can be down 50 supply and still come back and beat a massively bigger army with good engagement.
      Sc2 escalates very fast,by 10 minute mark(and usually earlier) any high level players are probably going to have 200 supply.
      In sc2 armies are much more deathball like,which isnt as much of a thing in current lotv meta as it use to be in Wings of liberty 2010,currently in lotv there is often little fights in different places,but even so the game is still MUCH more deathball friendly than sc1.
      To be honest I kind of prefer the engine and feel of sc2,it feels less random and more consistent than sc1,also everything is very intuative which is good.
      What sc1 did better for me personaly was overall graphic/art design,the soundtrack,the campaign,the feeling of grim darkness and real war,the awesome progression of a game,where there is much more clear and defined early/mid/late game,tech choices feel like more of a commitment and you dont reach 200 supply nearly as easily as in sc2.

    This was a lot of fun to watch. Would be awesome if they remade this game with better graphics but kept the same gameplay and put it on battle.net so we could play it easier.
    For SC2: They need to lower the attack dmg so there is more micro involved and units don't get 1 shot so easily in SC2, that removes the death ball and creates more about positioning and controlling units and utilizing the special units better..
    Since LOTV it has helped a ton because they added the lurker back and added the viper/defialer. But having units like swarm hosts that do nothing and serve no purpose in any matchup ruins the game.
    I still think the medivac kills SC2 too. Just have drop ships that do no heal and put medics back into the game. Drops are too powerful so you have to turtle a lot and can't be out microing and it creates too many base trades and all in doom drops which are lame

    I think the main difference between SC1 and SC2 is the mapping, SC2 mapping isn't put together very intellectually and creates the "army blob" effect... where's the SC1 mapping is bigger, awkward and had a little more thought put into it, unlike SC2 maps which had the same basic design with little to no awkwardness or complexity, forcing much more strategic play in SC1 maps. I mean when you look at it, the 1v1 maps in SC1 are close to the same size as your typical 2v2 or 3v3 maps in SC2, and SC1 maps were actually DIFFERENT from each other. As well as the units, wasn't as many units that had the same basic functions like SC2, and there were overall fewer units to choose from... creating more complex situations and army compositions from which you couldn't take the blob approach. SC1 is just overall, a much more strategic game, SC2 is basically a race to "who has the most destructive army blob at the fastest time".

      +monktonsocks not Entirely true I could deathball hydra roach all day long against terran mech and get nowhere if he has a decent number of tanks he can hold off immense amounts of zerg ground except maybe ultralisks. SC2 is more than just Giant Blob army first if that was the case Zerg would pretty much always win because they have the best production.

    Its sad to hear people say that SC2 is more balanced than SC1. People don't realize that SC1 was so balanced that its one of the few games that had a changing meta game without patches. SC1 did have its problems early on but after one big patch, i forgot which one it was. the whole game solidified into near perfect balance. It was beautiful watching epic games that lasted an hour. just to see the sheer stamina these players had to keep up such high apm for such a long time. you would always be pulled at the edge of your seat as you saw as they individually microed each marine to dodge lurkers. Or how much micro you needed to play ZvZ because of how mutalisks and scourges interacted. (the triangle technique forgot what it was called) All while still producing units one building at a time and sending your workers to mine minerals. One of the reasons why i loved visiting korea. just lul around when your not doing anything and watching SC1 on the tv..

    BW is much more difficult and harder to be the best at than SC2. The best BW players are the best RTS players in the world. SC2 in comparison is easy as hell when you look at how much shit you have to stay on top of. Flash was literally making marines out of like 15 barracks individually at a time. Jaedong had tons of units but only 12 go in each group. SC2 is an awesome game, but let's not forget where the real skill lies.

    I still cant understand how Blizzard fucked up easiest port in the history... SCI was so much better than SCII. All they had to do was fix those anoying things like 12 units-max or 5-quene in barracks etc, update graphics and give better maps. It was easy, as almost whole world waited just for updated SCI with new units but same gameplay and climate.
    SCII is almost totally diffirent game, diffirent gameplay and climate, maps are all the same with no open fields like here...just same sized chokepoints and tunnels. Unit looks and sounds is so much better in SCI, zerg buildings look like skin bone and muscle when terrans look like steel...not cartoonish Wow bullshit. Easiest comeback in history and they just fuck it up prohibiting old units and giving us some stupid replacers, ballance is fucked and always will be as they set up to force-something-new, when in the end its always one larg ball vs other large ball.

    • @petecabrina
      @petecabrina 9 лет назад +8

      Pro Toss It is basically exactly the same situation with Diablo 3, Blizzard had the most exceptional base to create the best ARPG of all time and they fuck it up because they try to add too many bells and whistles. I believe the issue is very simple, it comes down to the staff, the wrong head developers on teams, people who think they are talented trying to be unique and create something for themselves, justifying their positions and pay cheques. As things stand SC1 is still so far ahead of SC2 as a pure competive balanced RTS it is tragic, and we will still be waiting for years to even see if they can balance SC2.
      By all accounts Blizzard is more a money making machine than anything these days, they have all the angles covered in how to milk a $$$ and seem more interested in churning out the next big title than fixing their sub par competitive releases.

      Pro Toss I like how you nailed all the main aspects. I so much agree with the "cartoonish Wow bullshit"... how dafaq was that even possible... Wanna hear something sad? Been playing SC for a decade like all of you and when I bought SC2, on the very first loading screen when I started the game on Brutal, I got a hint. It said something like "SCVs are used to gather minerals". "Brutal", man! Phakien "Brutal", man...! "For experienced Starcraft players", man...
      I knew the game would be lame like all the other newer games just by watching all the marketing release . This "hint" was not lame, it was offensive. A part of me immediately regreted my purchase. I think this "hint" summarizes what Blizzard thinks of the original fanbase.
      So, at times I kinda really enjoy SC2. At others, I wonder if the game was ever designed to appeal to original SC fans in any way...

    well spider mines are burrowed, so unless there's an overlord nearby, the mutas can't snipe the mines, and it would be cumbersome to have SLOW overlords move with the much faster mutas

    Wow HDstarcraft you are just what a sc2 player needs! I have been hearing so much about bw but the videos were low quality and not being used to the graphics and units its kinda useless to watch it. You are truely a gift. Amazing quality amazing casting.
