Exactly what I do w/ charcoal on a big sheet of newsprint. Like you, my eyes are all over the place w/ my hand at opposites, yes the unfocused gaze. We trick ourselves so easily to draw "something", but the fun is drawing "nothing". For me tho, at some point close to "the end", whatever/whenever that comes, I will add a few lines to define what it is. The "you" that comes out subconsciously is always surprising.
I try to remind younger artists about this as well. Automatic drawing regularly will teach the brain that drawing is the normal state, and the plus side is there's no pressure to make something good:P
I can't help but see faces in these doodles. Whenever I start doing this I always end up drawing what looks like a portrait of people waiting for the bus.
i want the first one, if youve still got it.. how much?. i see so many things in that. some kind of monster with a woman tucked under his arm, another pulling his head backards by his nostrils, with a rabbit biting his leg. its a great piece of work.
Yea I use them myself their really great... You should find them when searching for "Pentel colour pen" or "Pentel colour brush" you can also blend them when using water like watercolour. How ever if you don't want that you can also buy the "Pentel pocket brush" which I also own and is really great. Both pens are quite expensive though but keep in mind that you can buy refills for both from what I know... Stay safe and have a nice day.

You have a great sense of shape, these automtic drawings turned out very nicely. Thank you for this video!
This brush pen drawing looks like a Chinese scholar's rock. And I will ask my student to do this kind of warm up before my Chinese landscape class.
I’m fascinated by this. I’m not an artist, but think I’ll try. Thank you!!
I'm a big fan of this, nice video. I have been trying it as well lately, thanks for the inspiration
