  • Mr Darcy and Elizabeth, or Colin and Jennifer, in costume, on the set of Pride & Prejudice 1995, talking about their views and feelings about their characters and why Darcy and Elizabeth are so interested in each other's opinion, although they apparently can't stand each other :) The making of the famous piano scene.

One of the things I love so much about this version (the all-time best!) of "Pride And Prejudice" is how so much is communicated between Elizabeth and Darcy without words...they need only look at each other, they understand each other, their developing passion is so deeply and quietly spoken, without words....it's fascinating, and it's truly beautiful. Not a lot of blathering, no overt anything. It is an eventual meeting and knowing of souls, in such a subtle and quiet way. I absolutely love it. My hat is off to the exceptional talents of Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth!

In my opinion Matthew Mcfayden appears a bit bland and unimposing in that role. Doesn't fit to the description of Mr.Darcy. But how can we know how the production company and co. decided to whom they give the roles? In film history roles have often not been given to those actors that "fit" but to those who got better networks and agents. Same with the Oscar film prize. Audrey Hepburn got the price for trivial Roman Holiday instead of Grace Kelly who did real acting in High Noon... I like Audrey but giving her the prize for such simple acting at the beginning of her career wasn't right. It was unfair.

impossible. It was the most horrible of times. Fashion and entertainment only would accept starving young women unable to physically defend theirselves or to speak out, and depending on males to be fed or protected. Despicable era that lasted until 2010 decade. I was in highschool in the late nineties. Don't you remember Calvin Klein's walking skeletons and a handful of brands following the trend? Or how in 2005 (premiered, but preproduction started at least 2-3 years before) the actress chosen for Elizabeth Bennet was Keira Knightley? Jennifer knew she had nothing to do against that trend. Anyway it also had some good things. Independent filmmaking and out of mainstream fashion brands had their time and space to call all this nonsense out.

But I like to think their feelings are not that far off as our feelings are today. I wonder if Jane Austen really knew the feelings felt by her characters. @Musicienne-DAB1995 yes, Lizzie is clearly intrigued by Darcy, despite her denials. As Darcy is by Lizzie, despite his occasional denials. Bubbling beneath the surface is the sense, as someone said, that these two were somehow somewhen destined for each other. Such a masterly romance. And this adaptation does it full justice.

Yes. As a kindness during Covid, Jennifer recorded herself reading Pride and Prejudice. Some she reads from her car and some from her home. I was startled to see she is blonde and a little disappointed because I so much wanted more Elizabeth. But as I listened to her comments, I discovered that I like Jennifer even more than the character she played. She is a charming person who reads all the parts quite brilliantly.

Both Colin and Matthew nailed Mr Darcy. But it is hard to compare both productions… Colin was the best actor in the old fashioned bbc series. In the movie both Elisabeth and Darcy were bewitching… the movie is cinematographically spoken one masterpiece.

@@valkyriesardo278 WRONG. Try actually listening to how they interpreted Darcy and the reason he plays it like that. All you Darcy know it alls who think Matthew “got it wrong” are completely ridiculous. It’s another CHOICE. Matthew’s a fantastic actor. He always has been. They saw Darcy as shy and reserved, as if he has an anxiety disorder, something Austen wouldn’t know to write about in that particular way. Pride and Prejudice is still fiction. There isn’t only one “correct” way of playing Darcy. It’s art. We don’t have to choose only one version, we get to watch them all.

At the end of the day, Lizzy and Darcy are both haters and love to make fun of people in a sneaky, clever way. This is what initially creates both the dissension and the attraction between them, and it is also why they are cosmically perfect for one another. I too am a hater, and this is why I love P&P

The only aspect I think this one could have done better was Charlotte. She wasn’t plain, looked rich, and looked the same age as the other girls, so it didn’t come across rhat the character is supposed to be plain, 27, and while not poor, wouldn’t have much to live on if she didn’t marry someone with a secure future.
