I'm on a limited lifespan, and spent time today with my almost 2 year old granddaughter. This song came to mind when I received a text from my daughter in law saying the granddaughter kept on calling my name after I left. She is a ray of sunshine in an otherwise grey existence.
I would suggest to any expecting dad, learn this song. You don’t have to be able to sing, but nine months of practice, and singing it quietly a cappella at bed time will bond you and your daughter, and give her a wonderful memory for life. Alternatively, just quietly sing it at your Daddy Daughter dance at her wedding. She won’t care if you don’t hit all the notes, it will be like diamonds to her.
I remember a story my Grandmothers loves telling me when ever I visit and its that this song played the day my aunty (her first born) was born, my grandmother always smiles whenever she hears it, softly tapping along and singing without a care which is nice to see.
Yes, Mary, it is, but the song was really dedicated to his first g/f. However the part that said "...it's coming into our world may have been something to do with the birth of his unborn daughter. Only he knows the reason. Mum loved this song when my little sister was born. We had a LP record titled 20 Explosive Hits and the song was in it, including others, e.g. Shilo. www.google.com/aclk?sa=l&ai=DChcSEwiaw8ia5e7xAhXOBHIKHYegDM8YABAHGgJzZg&ae=2&sig=AOD64_3RnN5aTVynspgEAOoSu1PpEB3zPw&ctype=5&q=&ved=2ahUKEwjE4sGa5e7xAhXZyjgGHUznDLQQwg96BAgBECc&adurl=

My older sister had this song as her “Daddy and Daughter” dance at her wedding. It was the first time I’d seen my father cry in quite a while, and it was such a moving moment!!!
This was also my Dad and Daughter dance at her wedding. Complete surprise to me. I played the song to her a few years ago and said “This is the song that makes me think of you.” Was a surprise for me when it started playing as we walked onto the floor. Surprised her when her very reserved dad started singing it in her ear. The only song I can sing and actually hit the notes.
I just heard this in June 2024 in New York long island, as the warm summer begins. Thinking of Australia and having heard the song at the end of the film Top of the Lake/China Girl with Elisabeth Moss, Nicole Kidman and Jane Campion as director. Although I'm not a father, the film with many mother-daughter intricate story lines and values, moved me including the culmination of this film with this song Lil Ray of Sunshine. Beautiful and moving comments thank you all. NN
I am closely related to Brian Cadd, as my grandmother had the name Cadd before marriage- but I wont spoil all my family history. My Grandma never had a good connection with her family, so I never speak of Brian to her, though I hold his music close to my heart and am very proud to share blood as a 14yo girl. If only I discovered him when I was younger. x
I've never had a Daddy..he died when I was 6. 41 years ild and it still tears me to pieces. But At least MY little Ray of Sunshine has one. AGood one! ..that's what matters now
The day I was born my father rang the local radio station to play this song (he also did the same for my sisters). But to this day, whenever I am sad or in need of comfort, this is what I listen to 💖💖💖
My older sister’s birth song. “A little ray of sunshine, has come into the world. A little ray of sunshine, in the shape of a girl.” Love you Mum and Dad, forever and always! ❤️ Cait, you are a blessing to this world, and I love you beyond words. Even though we haven’t seen each other for such a long time, I couldn’t be more proud of you as your brother. Unconditional love never dies. ❤️
I played little ray of sunshine to my daughter since she was borne.. She is 5 now, but, can handle mummy's moves, knows the words and the best beat do doo doo, do doo do.. I'm 43 really appreciate this one impaticular. 🍀🌈
Your comment spun me out as 18 years ago I was driving home listening to this song on the radio, I had just left the hospital where my partner had just given birth to our first daughter.
This song played on the radio in the car when I took my babypie home. That was 33 years ago today and it still reminds me of that time like it was yesterday. Still cry every single time I hear it. Brilliant times.
I love this song so much. My grandfather sent it to everybody when I was born. He died the year after. I miss him so much I can’t help but begin to cry as soon as the song starts.
This song was popular in the 1960s -the time of the Vietnam War. It was played often on the Oz Army radio. I had a beautiful golden haired two-year old back in Singapore . I thought of her every time it was played - and still do!
Every time I hear this song it reminds me of the first time I held my daughter in the NICU at he Royal Women's Hospital in 88 they had a radio on in the ward on 3MP as I was holding her this song came on
Called up 4BC, a music station in Brisbane on the night of 19th of November, 1989 after the birth of my first, my only daughter, Yasmin. Sadly, 27 years later she was mowed down by a third world driver and killed. This song still brings tears to this old man's eyes.
My daughter turns twenty tomorrow. She was ten weeks early, and we were totally unprepared for just how fragile she was. While she was being settled in to the NICU, and before her mum came out of the anaesthetic, I ducked out to the (conveniently close) pub. The barman must have seen rattled, first time dads on a regular basis, cos I didn't get around to ordering a beer, one was put in front of me, and he knew exactly what to say. He played this on the jukebox, and it calmed me right down
There seems to be two traditions in my family. The men go off away to provide for their little darlings, and this song gets sung. My Pa was on the rigs and sang this of my mother. My father deployed and sang this of my sister. I'm off soon too, but while I'm still here I'll sing again to my little ray of sunshine. Even when she tells me to stop copying a rolls her eyes.
my dad came up to me and asked “can i have this dance” and this song was on and i realised how connected i am to it and my dad and i just started balling out with tears ahh
Had this song for my daughters 21st, it is exactly how it is... born with blonde hair, name was going to be similar to mine... and she was my first born, 35yrs ago.

It played when my first daughter was born in 1986 :)

I’m proud this song is from Australia, when I first heard it I thought it was Stephen stills singing, but it’s our very own Glenn Shorrock
OMG Sean. I agree what a bloody great song from true blue Aussies..As you have stated.. So proud of these guys
Written by Brian Cadd I think? But yes Glenn sings it beautifully. He has an incredible voice
First for everything.. I'm 64 this year. this is first time I've ever heard this song.. welcome 2020.

Her fathers says she has to have a name,
Not the same as her mom's, but a name just the same,
A little ray of sunshine has come into the world,
A little ray of sunshine in the shape of a girl
We'll show her the dress that she'll wear
With the gold flowing hair that nature provided
My little ray of sunshine has come into the world,
My little ray of sunshine in the shape of a girl
A little ray of sunhine
I want to know if you think she looks good in the pink,
Grandma has bought her
Our own little daughter
She can make you feel good,
She can make you feel that it's all worthwhile,
Only by her smile
Only by her smile
Have you noticed she's just like her father,
And I think that I'd rather
Her hair was much darker,
My little ray of sunshine has come into the world,
My little ray of sunshine in the shape of a girl.
She can make you feel good,
She can make you feel that it's all worthwhile,
Only by her smile
Only by her smile
Only by her smile
Oh my little ray of sunshine,
My little ray of sunshine,
Little ray of sunshine,
Little ray, little ray, little ray,
Sweet little darlin',
