We woke up at 6am this morning to a flooded basement. Our sump pump that has been grumbling and threatening to quit has finally given up. It was all pretty overwhelming but than we remembered RUclips always has a fix it video. Typed "how to fix a flooded sump pump" into the search bar and this fantastic tutorial popped up. Never would have guessed a channel named Taco Stacks would turn out to be our hero. Thank you for educating and giving us the confidence to unhook and change out our flooded sump pump. Happy Fourth of July to you and yours. Sending infinite love and peaceful vibrations from the creeks and woodland of Missouri.
I'm impressed with you sending out a video on Sunday. I live in Texas with no basement. When I was a child (now 76)we lived in Rochester NY. My Dad would have to use a bucket to make sure the basement wouldn't flood. Some times all night. Love your channel.
Well if you lived in Greece up near the lake where I do then you know how wet the basements get! I'm learning how to do this and buying a replacement one just to be ready when mine eventually dies. Where in Rochester did you grow up?
I recently bought a 100year old house. It has a full basement. It also seems to have a drain in the floor that seems to do a pretty good job. I think you did a great job with the sump pump. I hope you will enjoy the rest of your day.
Had to laugh when you said that water and electrics don’t mix and then the cable fell into the water. Thought that would only happen to me. But truly I am full of admiration.
Really good video and will help people save money from having to hire someone. I remember at my parents house when we had heavy rains we always worried about it not working. We never stored things on the floor
Hey, remember when we used to only have to replace sump pumps every ten years? It's unfortunate things like this are not being built to last beyond a year. Thank you for posting a very informative and easy to follow video. I like how you take your time to show us and tell us clearly and carefully, without overloading us with too much information. Obviously, everyone's system is a little different but, you did an excellent job covering the basics. It never occurred to me that "upgrading" to a more powerful pump could have other implications as far as new plumbing and or connections, too. Again, thank you very much and keep up the good content!
We saying me , did fixing sub pump. When I was in high school my dad couldn't do it. I learned so many things . How to do wiring and carpentry and even showed my husband and a contractor how to wire a light into a outlet. Never can know too much. I build my horse barn and fences.
I truly am impressed that you did not show any frustration that your sump pump failed. If you have a sump pump, it is going to fail at some point. Be proactive in checking it regularly! We learned this the hard way! Water in a basement where you also store things is never fun 😢
sump went out a night of a huge storm. the water was up to my knees, and without your video I would have spent god knows how much money on someone to come over. this video is a life saver, thank you for posting. Got er switched out in 10 minutes.
Also was flooded not as bad as you though. With me, the tethered float switch (like this guy has) was worn and shorted so I just replaced the float switch. Glad it worked out.
For my bf it was 1000$. But no flooding. He's lucky he took care of it the next day by calling someone. But I'm glad some people can get it done without help 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you for sharing. Love how to videos. As a homeowner you never know when you will have to do something, and being able to yourself is way cheaper.
Thank you so much for this. You helped us replace our sump pump at 11:30 pm. I was amazed that we could do this and was sure we'd have to call a plumber. When I saw you sloshing thru all of that water I felt better about my situation. God bless you!!
We have had to replace multiple sump pumps, my husband has become an expert! I am an expert at holding the flashlight and holding the tools, LOL. Awesome video as usual Mr Stacks!
Hi Taco. I’m sorry about your sump pump going out, but I thank you for showing how to replace it. Now if one of my kid’s basements have this problem I can replace it for them or tell them how. I don’t have a basement so I’m not going to have to but it’s a good thing to know if you know someone who does and needs help with it. Take care and may your week be filled with sunshine and lots of treasures found. PEACE. ✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️🥰🥰🥰🦮🦮🦮🦮🦮🦮🦮🥰🥰🥰💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
Thanks! I've been in my house 10 years and have not had a sump pump issue but thanks to this video, I am going to check out what I need get in case I do. In fact, I am going to order the replacement to keep handy for in the event of...better safe thensorry.
We had 2 sump pumps,1 electric ,and 1 battery back up. Also when we built our home WE HAD PUT IN LOTS OF DRAIN PIPES INSIDE AND OUTSIDE BASEMENT . 30 YEARS ONLY REPLACED 2 TIMES. Lucky. Good job there Taco Stacks.
How cool is this? Now Taco is our repairman to show us how to do things ourselves! Thanks Taco for sharing your wisdom and knowledge with us. Blessings always! ❤️✝️
I found out the hard way that your insurance will not cover the damage from sump pump failer unless you insure the pump itself. Also you should hire a bonded electrical guy to put you in a ground fault outlet. Just saying. Good luck
Great job, very helpful. You might want to think about making or having a spare measured pipe piece that you showed all ready, so you don't have to deal with it in an emergency situation.
You did a great job explaining that Taco Stacks. Thank goodness I do not have a basement, I do not know of many homes in the Glendale/Phoenix, Arizona area's that do.
I have the same pump where I just replaced a failed tether float switch. As the water level is pumped below the top of the pump, I hear this hiss or air sound that gradually gets louder as the water level gets lower, coming from that small black 1/2" dia. circle (grommet looking thing) on top of the pump right next to where the tether clip is screwed in. If I put my finger there, I can tell that's where air is going into or coming out of. Pump is pumping fine. The weep hole is squiring fine. Thanks so much.
Should try and raise it off the bottom of the sump pit by an inch or so. It may allow for better flow into the pump and limit any sediment being sucked through.
@@b3nadry1 Natural ground water is dirty, this water is fresh & clean. Why does the water rise up to the house when water naturally travels down due to gravity ?
Good video. I'm in the process of replacing my sump pump now. You talked about getting one "of the same size". Not sure if what you meant (and perhaps more important) is to try to replace with the identical model. That should make it almost plug (well, unscrew!) and play. Particularly in a sump well, a different unit with a different depth, or location of the discharge, as you said, might require reworking the whole discharge pipe. Since you had it out, it might have been good to wipe down that discharge pipe. You had a lot of fittings on it. It would be good to be able to see if there were any real issues with it, vs just dirt and film. Also for my rubber slip joint, I needed to work a screwdriver between it and the pipt to get it to release. I was surprised yours released once you removed the clamp.
Also forgot to add, a door idea would have been to compare the float adjustment (length of cord from the lock screw) of the old pump, and set the new one similarly, before installing it. [Assuming it's a same pump, with the same height.]
My crawl space under my 1939 house collects water when it rains hard. It was over a foot deep when the city's fire hydrant across the street leaked and found a way under my house through an old sewer pipe. The city was at first saying I had a spring under my house, cause my water meter wasn't showing a leak. The sump pump was running almost 24/7. It finally went out and I bought anither one and it lasted about a week before it went out. I finally called the city and said you need to fix the problem, they had about a dozen worker's walking all over when I left for work. By the time I got home they had the road all tore up in front of my house and Saud they found the problem. I was relieved
Taco Buy A Zoeller or Liberty submersible sump pump. They last a very long time. My Zoeller was still going strong 18 years when I sold my last house. My new house still going 10 years now and I have a backup. Its usually the switch that goes so then I replace that for the next backup. Im in a wet area also so it turns on a lot. They cost more but worth it. Zoeller made in USA :-}
As an Australian, we don't have basements. I'm curious as to what purpose your basement serves. If it fills with water then it can't be used for storage. What do you use it for? 😊❤🐨
Well this was interesting…Never even knew what one looked like….Question where does the water come from…rain?…Can you seal the foundation more?…Sandbags? ..Sorry all I know is sandbags for hurricane season
It can have several sources: ground seepage, heavy rain and it looks like the house is in a valley with a natural spring(s) source hence the pond. Here it's from being close to the water. Dig a foot down and the hole fills with water in just a few minutes.
The video was pretty good, what would of made it better would of been to show an actual check valve and how it goes in the pipe. A close up of the t-bolt assembly would of helped also.
Home depot does have pumps withe a lifetime warranty - they cost more but well worth it ( brings tears so bring kleenex ) - I have one that is over 10 years old and I pump a lot of water - when I put it in the old one still worked so I saved it for a spare to use if I had to get a replacement pump. nice job/video hose clamp not a T bolt
You should have a under drain surrounding your house. Getting that much water to basement and just pumping it away will only keep foundation getting extreme water damage all the time.
Try tucking the plug in the your waist band of your pants then you won't have the plug folding into the water. You might want to invest in a water sensor. They are cheap and will keep you from filling up your basement with water.
The first thing you need to do is Turn off the Power to the outlet where the sump pump is plugged into. That circuit needs to be on a GFCI breaker or receptacle. What is a T bolt? Looks like you were tightening up a hose clamp.
The screw driver you used looks like a six in one. Meaning the shaft isn't just to hold the driver bits, it's also a 1/4" and 5/16" nut driver. The clamps you tightened use 5/16" hex heads usually. Much easier to use the nut driver than finding the slot in the screw under water.
With the amount of water you have going in there I would have a secondary pedestal backup sub pump that kicks in when you're mean to pump dies with a backup alarm that squawks when it runs to let you know that it's running
Hey Taco very informative is your pump on a GFCI ? For you own safety you may want to look into it. I’ve installed them in my older homes anywhere water and electricity can be a hazard. Always turn the circuit off before working on it. Sorry if I’m coming off like a Dad ,just a long time subscriber who wants to see you making vids
Taco, seems like the lake water is seeping into your house - you need to fix the foundation of the house and put up a retaining wall for the lake, otherwise you will keep having the same problem of water going into the basement of your house.
Stacks. Get a back flow valve on that line. You will add 5 to 7 years to your pump and get a battery back up pump system. Save yourself some hassle and your foundation. 😉

The Master Sump Pump replacement class. So glad you only had 3" of water. Very informative, if you know you know.
You never cease to amaze me. Well done!
You've replaced more sump pumps than anyone I know hahaha

You did a very good job with your DIY sump pump video. It wasn't too long.
I am lucky to be married (46 years) to a man who can swing a hammer, fix plumbing, electric, and the dishes!💪❤ thanks Taco

Wouldn't go without a backup pump. My main pump died when I was away for 5 days 2 weeks ago.

You’re a true handy man. Thankfully no basement here in Texas. ❤😊
The teaching video was great, trimming around the pond is on point!

Nicely done, never had to deal with such things Thank God! I would be checking for floods all the time.
Great job, very helpful. You might want to think about making or having a spare measured pipe piece that you showed all ready, so you don't have to deal with it in an emergency situation.
Brilliant.Wanted to ask you about it.Could you store the water for the garden in the summer?
You did a great job explaining that Taco Stacks. Thank goodness I do not have a basement, I do not know of many homes in the Glendale/Phoenix, Arizona area's that do.
Great episode, a nice change ..thumbs up and watched all the ads, cheers Bud !
Great video demo!! Nice job! Thanks for sharing. Musician/Artist- USA Thom Meinert
Aw man. That sucks. You have the worst luck with them. Good thing you are so handy. Thanks for a Sunday video. Hugs for Salsa.

That was so sweet of your to show us.
I'm always surprised at the amount of water you get inside. Must be a bit frustrating at times. Keep "pumping" out great videos 👍👍
Should try and raise it off the bottom of the sump pit by an inch or so. It may allow for better flow into the pump and limit any sediment being sucked through.
That was really interesting , I always wondered how those worked…😂😂you are very handy 😂😂
Taco, if that water is coming naturally from the ground, how did they build the house ?
they probably had no building codes back when it was built. Taco could have done nothing and gained a basement pool room.
They probably has the foundation tarred when it was first built, but afte4 years and years it wore off.
@@signet9542 Why would they build foundations under water ?

All good points, sometimes other parts aside from the pump need replacing. I should have mentioned that.
Can you give the link to that song at the end?
Hey Taco. Do you always have water in the basement? Would be hard to deal with. Take care
Cool...i donthave sump pump but i think this is very informative...thanks for sharing your knowledge on this problem...til next time...🥰🥰
Great job! Loved this video 🤗💖🦋

What is a T bolt? Looks like you were tightening up a hose clamp.
Thank you for sharing. Very helpful
That looks like a lot of fun
Wow! I've never heard of this before!😮
Hope you’re running a dehumidifier down there . Some excavation might help with French drain around the perimeter of house.
Can you do an update vid once it’s all pumped out and dry ?
That's Taco, I learned alot!!
I had one doing that last summer and all it was was a tiny rubber ring that come off on the metal rod that the float rides on.
Is there a easy way to get rid of the water from the basement ❤️
The screw driver you used looks like a six in one. Meaning the shaft isn't just to hold the driver bits, it's also a 1/4" and 5/16" nut driver. The clamps you tightened use 5/16" hex heads usually. Much easier to use the nut driver than finding the slot in the screw under water.

I replaced a few and watched this as a review. I'm confused about the toggle bolt. I've never seen them used on sump pipes.

I wonder why they put a basement in a house close to where there is a natural spring.
Make sure you put the old one out by the road for the local scrap collector. 😂
Could you add a second pump with a higher float to kick in if the regular pump fails?
Maybe think about keeping a spare sump pump on hand? Then when the one being used stops working, you have one right there ready to replace it.
Thats a hose clamp not a t bolt.....
I asked for elbow grease at Home Depot and they laughed at me
