Scott Snyder This story took me for ride. I liked the added events of Bruce's younger days and how they tied to the main arc. The story was true to the character as well, a great book

Secret City never hit with me but I absolutely loved Dark City. The Ridler storyline and then the last few pages with Alfred saying, "I'm afraid he's spoken for" is pure perfection.
@@ardenaudreyarjiof course it does. They both tell the story of Batman’s first year after a crisis both in the Modern Age of comics. I don't know if it's because I love Snyder too much, the Riddler being my favorite villain, or how much I love when writers redo Batman's origins, but I absolutely loved Zero Year. Yeah it's not perfect, but for me anyways a lot of the problems you brought up are things that I either never thought of or just accepted so that the story could work. It's a comic, have a bit of fun! I absolutely loved Zero Year, in my opinion it's the best work Snyder has done so far (not counting Endgame.)
I loved Zero Year as well. Honestly probably one of my favorite Batman stories. May sound nuts but yeah. Could have something to do with the fact that I picked this up from the start RIGHT when I decided to get back into comics. So I could be biased because I hold a special place in my heart for this story. Also, the artwork is some of my favorite ever.
I'm pretty sure the whole statement made by Sal at 22:16 is debunked completely considering in the previous arc, Bruce told the Bat-Family about that one time when he visited Joker at Arkham to test if whether or not Joker knew Bruce was Batman at all and the conclusion Bruce made was that Joker chose to not care about the man beneath the Batman cowl. Joker wouldn't even blackmail about Batman's identity or anyone's at all because that would ruin his fun with the Bat-Family.
I have no doubt the guy read it, but some of what seem to be his best points against the story are actually incorrect. For example: Bruce did not took the electro shock when he was younger, he stopped everything in the last minute because he learned that he could carry on with the struggle, then took the shock for Gotham because he is a freakin hero (and he knew he could die). And there are other misconceptions along the video. Love the channel, keep it up!
Sorry, but is it only me, or did i get it wrong? Bruce was not shocked in the electro-therapy session. He changed his mind at the last second. Plus, i think the riddler took control of Gotham for almost a month, I think, Because he does mention that the "riddle challenge" was going on for about 27 days, and bruce was unconscious for quite sometime, that the kid's mother had to use an IV and shave his beard. Either way it was an interesting story. Was it a great one? not really. The best part of it all is that last two pages where Alfred fantasies about the "What if future of Bruce Wayne". I think that set the tone perfectly to the whole bat legacy.
The scene in the study was way better than it was in year one. This versions gives the image of the bat much more significance to the character, where as whit year one you can imagine Frank Miller going "Well, he needs to land on the idea of a bat, how do I get him there? Ah fuck it, I'll just have one crash through the window, that's good enough."
wolfman571 Best part about opinions is that you're entitled to them. Sorry the Frank Miller scene didn't hit you the way it did me. Glad you found something like it to satisfy your interests, though.
I like Snyder a lot but you hit the nail on the head when you said sometimes his.stories get needlessly complicated. Year One is so iconic partly because it's so simple and it's message is so clear.
zero year isn't just an origin story for batman tho. i will give you the secret city arc is, but everything else after that is more like year 2/3 batman.
Around the 24 min mark when Sal is saying Joker knowing his destiny and that he has to become like that it reminds me of a brilliant webcomic called Batman The Deal by Moonhead Press find it and read it, its an awesome idea about the relationship of Batman and Joker
Damn I defintely disagree with you guys. I mean you leveled legitimate criticisms and that's fair, I just mean I personally love Zero Year. It's not perfect but I really enjoyed it. I also think the book is sort of a love letter to many Bat books, so I love the homages and references. Also Greg Capullo's art is absolutely GORGEOUS in this book, and paired with FCO'S colors and Mikki's (?) inks... every page just pops and oozes with personality. Some of the story may be cliché, but it worked for me. But all in all I still enjoyed your commentary even if I didn't agree with you. I love your Back Issues series and what you guys do and you always make me laugh. Hope you cover more Snyder/Capullo works in the future.
I've read year one many times but I'm not a big fan of it to be honest. To be fair I don't really like Frank Millers work as much as everyone else does lol Zero Year wasn't perfect by any means but I think it's still fun and I enjoyed the nods to the original Batman comics such as the suit asthetics and the Dr Death inclusion
when it comes to year 1, i feel like it's much more a gordon story than a batman story. zero year as a whole works not just as the origin, with the secret city arc, but as an early days batman.
Well I finally got to see the whole red-hood pupil-dilation that you mentioned way back in the Death of the Family episode. While it _is_ cool, I'm glad I didn't buy every single issue to see it. This whole origin story seems waaaaay too drawn out.
why? the entire zero year arc isn't just the origin story of batman. i would say zero year is more like an early days batman story, than just an origin. since there are 3 parts to zero year you can think of it as year 1 - year 3 batman.
I actually loved this. I never really liked the Miller Batman stories which is weird cuz I love stuff that was inspired by it. His Batman always felt a little too unhinged to me. Paul Dini will always be my favourite Batman writer but I also love Snyder for how “complete” his Batman story was. Even though Last Night on Earth is not canon to the main DC continuity it is the end of Snyders Batman in my eyes. Rare to see something like that.
I quite reading DC when the New 52 came out. I was a huge DC before then. I liked that they weren't just churning out tons of needless spinoff books like Marvel was. The DC universe and its history were fine the way they were. Now I just read more independent stuff or pre-52 books.

Is it a story? I mean the whole robin thing I guess you could explain to them the robins and how DC has tried to make them all sync up in the new timeline.
Great video as always, but the Zero Year is not just a narrative surrogate to Year One. It also refers to the "Zero Event" or "Zero Year" of any historical timeline. In this story, it is as if Gotham regressed to a more Primitive Age, like in the beginnings of Mankind's history - with the Nature reclaiming the landscape and the electricity failing.
I don't have the same opinion you have, Zero Year is not perfect, it has flaws, but I still think it's good, it's better than most comic arcs out there. I think you guys are seeing this in a wrong prespective, instead of thinking of Zero Year as a replacement for Year One, why not think it's a Prequel to Year One? I know it has some timelines issues but I think it's possible.
Alex, I'm so glad you liked the book. But please be aware of how condescending you sound when you suggest someone "re-read" something in order to "get it." Red Hood One becomes the Joker. Ergo, he's the Joker. I think I actually make the same distinction in the episode itself.
I'm so sorry I did not mean to come across rude I was typing in a hurry. But what I mean is red hood one was someone else then on the night of the ace chemicals attack some one had killed red hood one and took his place (joker). Once again sorry for sounding rude with the re read, It just that it was a super long ark and you are bound to forget stuff or miss things.
TV Little House Comics I prefer them too. The only hardcover I have is Batman: Zero Year - Secret City. It seems though that trades come out months after hardcovers so I guess I'm getting hardcovers till the trade is out.
"And he got stabbed by a hooker" - Tiffany , great random throw ins was hilarious...this story is HORRIBLE, I feel bad for Sal for having to read this and re-tell it
I know this is not how it is in the new 52... but in my head Batman have been active for 10-12 years and have only been revealed to the world with in the last 5 years as being real... the first 5 years he had just really stuck to the shadows and stayed hidden... the crazy people that pops up in Gotham is ridden off as Gotham being a cesspool... so of course crazy people will pop up there... that made more sense to me time wise... but Zero Year F'ed that up for me... they could have made all this new 52 stuff make sense sooo easy... but noooo... Convoluted!
Question, idk if you will see this so I'll tweet this to you also but looking back at Zero year, after Rebirth, do you still mind that you didn't like the changes. Because you said in the video that after Multiversity if they establish that this is a different world it's still not great. However it is a different situation where things actually got messed up by Dr. Manhattan (or so we assume). So what is cannon, is it the retconned origin or is it the year one origin?
I like watching these videos for different interpretations, but the skepticism of you guys gets to me after a while. So I can't watch more than one at a time. Ben for one seems to HATE EVERYTHING about EVERY comic you talk about. It seems like you guys might give these stories a little too much flak than they deserve. I'm still subbed, but I'd like to see you guys do a Back Issue episode where you actually LIKE the story.
Check out our episodes about "Avengers: Disassembled", "Old Man Logan", and "Secret War" for some books that we generally liked (just a few that I can recall off the top of my head). Or more accurately, books that Sal liked. Ben and I don't read the books for Back Issues so we're just going on his account of the story and what we see while flipping through the pages.
For the Batman Year one thing at the beginning from what I remember is he got shot by the police after he had a street fight with Selina/Holly and their pimp.
This video is a true testament to how subjective art can be. I absolutely love this story, and I love TDK trilogy, and I can’t process the issue you guys have with the similarities between them.
I think it's the idea that comics ALWAYS go to the "What do the movie overlords want us to do? This? Yes, movie overlords. Yes, we will do as you ask." in that regard.
Hi guys. Greetings from Malaysia (it's near Singapore). Freaking love the show especially Back Issues because it really relates to people who don't read comics like myself due to the difficulty of finding them and i literally cant afford even one issue of a comic here. (it goes like 20-30 dollars for one) . It makes gives a better understanding although its still confusing as shit of the DC and Marvel universes. You guys just made the explanation so simple and funny so that even layman like myself can understand and laugh at the same time. Keep it up guys. :) P.S : I found you guys from Rob's channel
+Adam Cerutti I respect that you like it. What exactly does that mean, though? Like I'm being negative for what, dramatic effect? Didn't like it. Might not be your opinion, but it's the truth. Story notwithstanding, it's a subjective opinion.
Although I agree with you that proto-Joker feels kind of wrong, I enjoyed Zero Year much more than I thought I would. I expected it to be really boring.
How about the good parts of the story? Sometimes it seems yall just glossing over the good stuff and homing in on the stuff you can make fun of. I'll admit, I liked this story so I am biased, but I enjoy watching you guys and I figure some criticism is all good.
Some things i'm sad you didn't bring up: New Batmobile Bat blimp Bat blackout the post issue side stories the "HELP" bit at the end of #29 the "Bullet lesson" flash back at least a mention of the tie-ins Dr. Death's... death The awesomeness from the beginning of #24 I could go on, and i know you don't always think about that stuff in improve, but... yeah. I guess i'm just bummed that you don't talk about a lot of the stuff that was good and really cool from the story. I mean, the point of the show is to sell Ethan and Ben on the book, right? Then why do you only talk about the stuff that you think is lame?
This is never going to replace Year One in my heart, but I think it's perfectly good as an origin for the New 52 universe. You can tell that Snyder has passion for the story. That said, Riddler is an insufferable douche with weird outdated sideburns. Bought trades since I started watching Back Issues: 14
I liked this "review" much better than the A Vs X video. Just because in this, they seemed to ask questions that were relevant and were questions that you really wanted to know "WHY?". The A V X video, they seemed to ask questions just to pretend they didn't get it to make the story seem stupid and make it make less sense then it really did. Just my opinion though.
Well they're not really reviews, as much as they're explanations to two people who don't normally read comics. Nobody here asks questions they don't want to know the answers to. To you, it might seem nitpicky and deliberate, but you also know so much about the story and characters, already. Those two have almost zero context. Glad you dug this episode, though!
TV Little House Comics Well the thing I found funny about the last video was that each of the guys could answer the other guys question kind of easily. "Why are the 5 not as powerful as just 1?" "Because it's divided amongst them..." "oh" But yeah I am definitely an X-men guy. But I would also consider myself a Batman guy too but this story line just seemed like change just for the sake of change. So logical questions.
+Camilo Roldán I don't like to tell people they are wrong, but your comments warrant it. I'm sorry if you believe that what you are saying is true, because that means you think that I hate someone that I have known for just about a decade. I simply do not. I realize that if you have already created a narrative in your head that I do, there is nothing I can do to change that. Similarly if you're just not a fan of me, there is little I can do about that. I'm honestly just glad that you're watching our videos and reading comics...it's all we can ask for.
Sorry if it wasn't for you guys- appreciate the read either way.
Mind = blown
All in all, that was a very nice and classy way for Snyder to put it.

That is exactly what happened
This video is a true testament to how subjective art can be. I absolutely love this story, and I love TDK trilogy, and I can’t process the issue you guys have with the similarities between them.
I think it's the idea that comics ALWAYS go to the "What do the movie overlords want us to do? This? Yes, movie overlords. Yes, we will do as you ask." in that regard.
Ya gotta admit, it's kinda refreshing that they didn't show his parents die AGAIN. Saved a lot of ink and paper...
I love this channel lol the jokes for days
30:00 All I hav'to say is, Curtis '50-Cent' Jackson . . .
I sort of like the Riddler's plan but the story sounds .... I don't know, cluttered?
Is this story line (zero year, court of owls, death of the family, endgame) connected to batman eternal and if it is how is it connected?
P.S : I found you guys from Rob's channel
Thank you so much, Felix!
I really did like Zero Year a lot. Maybe I need to read it again, but I feel like you guys are being a bit more negative than the book warrants.
+Adam Cerutti I respect that you like it. What exactly does that mean, though? Like I'm being negative for what, dramatic effect? Didn't like it. Might not be your opinion, but it's the truth. Story notwithstanding, it's a subjective opinion.
No, I just disagree. Thanks for getting back to me! Love the content!
Although I agree with you that proto-Joker feels kind of wrong, I enjoyed Zero Year much more than I thought I would. I expected it to be really boring.
why is the proto-joker wrong?
The reason that they didn't tell the parent death scene is cuz everyone knows it
You made this great comic sound like a joke... I don't know what to feel about this
How about the good parts of the story? Sometimes it seems yall just glossing over the good stuff and homing in on the stuff you can make fun of. I'll admit, I liked this story so I am biased, but I enjoy watching you guys and I figure some criticism is all good.
Some things i'm sad you didn't bring up:
New Batmobile
Bat blimp
Bat blackout
the post issue side stories
the "HELP" bit at the end of #29
the "Bullet lesson" flash back
at least a mention of the tie-ins
Dr. Death's... death
The awesomeness from the beginning of #24
I could go on, and i know you don't always think about that stuff in improve, but... yeah. I guess i'm just bummed that you don't talk about a lot of the stuff that was good and really cool from the story. I mean, the point of the show is to sell Ethan and Ben on the book, right? Then why do you only talk about the stuff that you think is lame?
We didn't really have a lot of time to get into all that stuff, and I didn't think ZY warranted a two-parter. Plus nobody likes two-parters anyway.
ComicPOP! I do :)
Am I the only guy here like head over feet for Tiffany?
How many times does Sal say the word 'like' unnecessarily in this video?
The real question is how many in every episode! Count them up and get back to us!
+ComicPOP! Lol
Wasn't Earth One his new 52 origin?
Those are like modern Elseworlds
Can we all just say that Batman: Earth One is the best origin story?
Ryan Haack meh. i like zero year more. but earth one is pretty damn solid. can't wait for vol 2
Trevor Merritt haven't read it yet
We'll certainly discuss it this month!
No, we cannot say that. Ever. Johns manages to miss the point of Batman's origins and gives us the least competent Batman in comics.
PlaysWith Squirrels i think that was the whole point behind the idea
Whoops, sorry mr snyder
DC's pandering to the movies is nothing compared to some of the stuff Marvel does.
If there is one constant in life, it is that these guys complain about everything.
And it's hilarious!
that's the point of the show. If they didn't question everything, you wouldn't be here.
sure we complain sometimes, but plenty of our other shows talk about books we love. check out Hack and Splash for evidence of that.
This is never going to replace Year One in my heart, but I think it's perfectly good as an origin for the New 52 universe. You can tell that Snyder has passion for the story. That said, Riddler is an insufferable douche with weird outdated sideburns.
Bought trades since I started watching Back Issues: 14
do you guys like any comics? you seem to think everything you review is dumb
25:30 the worst villian ever known!!!😂😂😂
I'm not even halfway through this video and even though you guys are hating on the comic I think it actually sounds like a good story
See, back then Tiffany didn't hate Ben!
+Camilo Roldán Tiffany hates ben ?
+dav 2one not really. it's just a joke
+dav 2one Is not a joke. What her face when Ben talks.
TheRealZubes Thank you for clearing that up !
the undertaker had purple gloves.....just sayin
I enjoy all of your content, even if I don't always agree(the purple gloves lol) I would still gladly have you guys sign my copy of zero year
I was wondering what happened to Ethan.
Ethan's not here because he's recovering from prostitute-inflicted stab wounds
We're calling it a "vacation," but Peter's probably a little closer to the reality.
THE BEAR! RAWR!
Zero year was still very good, I disagree with you, about it not being good.
