The most impressive thing about this video is not necessarily how well he plays (he's an international soloist after all) but rather how much result he gets out of an half an hour of practice. I would need weeks to get a similar scale of improvement practicing something on my level. This shows what a massive bedrock of ingrained skill he's got.
Thanks for being humble enough to allow us to see you struggle through this difficult piece of music. There are no real shortcuts to mastering something like this. Discipline, dedication and determination over time gets you there. Thanks for the encouragement to take it slow and keep practicing.
if he struggles we are so screwed lol but my friend is learning that and I just started learning violin and I am inspired by ray chen and my friend heh
Imagine being Ray's neighbor and hearing him practice and put a piece together. I hope they realize how privileged they are. I'd never leave home, in case I missed him playing...
I really like this, I hope pros like you would record how they would first dissect a piece they have never played (preferably semi well known) I've always been curious how fast they can actually sightread certain passages and how quickly/slowly it takes them to play it. And your explanation of what you're doing is great too! Another thing is, it would be cool to see what you would do for a proper day of practise session, eg how many hours, if you ever do exercises and studies and what warmups you do (if you do any of those still!) etc.
Decent sight reading skills that practice and understanding of music theory. Like any language skill, it also has to be maintained by most people. I was late to learning it, but did well once, but have lost that ability. It might come back with study. No matter his understanding of music theory helping him learn the music is apparent when discusses which scales. Also, I think the point “95% is muscle memory” and the music will come along the way is an interesting one. It is a lot of practice hours for sure.
Ray you are so inspiring for me, i've been playing violin for two years, now i have 27 seven years and sometimes i feel to quit, but i see a vídeo of you playing and it keeps me inspired. Thanks you. Greetings from colombia.
This the beauty of Rey Chen. When we ever see a professional violin practices in front of us. Showing us he is normal person like need to work with a lot of effort to get things done. I think he is great person
2:35 yeah. That is a high note 😣 But I remember similar practises back when I was younger... you won't really notice it, but everyone around you will be reeeeeeally annoyed within less than a minute 😂
I just realized that hilary hahn plays this in her recordings of paganini. Jesus christ, I did not even know it was this hard because she makes it sound so easy. I've gained even more respect for her.
I remembered a summer when I wanted so badly to play The Devil's Trill Sonata. That summer, I practiced 4 hours a day, everyday, until my hands were too damaged. A year later I came back and got it. Maybe these things just come in time :D
thank you for teaching me how difficult is to learn classical music for a professional player too... now I admire you and other musicians more than before. Such a perseverance!
That was actually really inspirational. I am not a professional violinist so I tend to procastinate but this gave me the motivation I needed to unpack my violin today
Thanks so much, Ray for putting this on RUclips. You are giving someone like myself a chance at what you have been so blessed to be given the chance to do!
Thank you so much for this experience!!! I started playing the violin as an adult and I’m always keen on no scratching and playing in tune all the time while practicing new stuff 🙉 The first feedback of my new violin teacher was: Dare to scratch and squeak but play with passion without holding you back 😂👍🏻
Thank you for demonstrating an approach to your practice-style for this technical piece.I’m sure it will help countless a musician. You’re an inspiration to music, and for that, I salute you🙏🏼
Bravo! for sharing this! I would counter this is not ugly, but beautiful that you demystify the work that happens behind the performances. You inspire me (and I'm not a violinist)! Those work sessions we do in any art can erode our sense of progress if we don't teach ourselves how to learn before we teach ourselves new techniques.
Thank you for being true to yourself, appreciate this very much. Your double stopped flying staccato is amazing. Looks like your 4th finger is a least 1inch longer than mine.
I wonder if one day we could have the extremely slow practice with all the sweet tricks. Thank you for putting the time and effort to show what lies behind the scene.
Heifetz's advice about practicing- First, mental study with music and then actual practice. Get the left and then right hand, and synchronize both. Look at the music before go to bed for memorizing. Practice 3rds first when practicing scales. Look at your fingers. "I practiced like devil. Hard work is more important than talent"- J.Heifetz
My favorite version of this is Leonid Kogan's. I don't play but i definitely listen, & I spend a certain amount of time listening to master classes & practices like this. I think it makes me appreciate the playing more.

Even the musician gods are humans and need to pratice. That is a nice thing to see, I bet you put some sense into some peoples heads. There is not ONLY gift and talent, there is hard work! SO, let's practice, everyone!
This is a great video! I love watching you practice this piece. Please keep doing videos like this. They are amazing! It really shows how much time it takes to master and practice a piece.
Please post more practice videos! It’ll help me get back into playing violin! I haven’t been able to do really serious practicing for over a decade because I kept getting avian birdbone illness injuries so I need there to be more practice videos and so do the rest of us!
Geeez, didn't realize those are actual notes when you go so high your off the fingerboard LOL. Thanks Rey! Watching you makes me want to practice more.
Thank you so much for this expert advice! Exactly what I needed to hear. I just started playing instruments again including the violin. The slowness can feel burdensome cause I want to sound the way I do in my head/dreams in real life but the way you describe practicing makes it so much more manageable
It's depressing but your little finger is longer than my hand! Thanks for baring your (musical) soul like this - really fascinating to see a pro getting it together.

Will do! Got two competitions coming up so I gotta practice!
Ray, on a typical day, how many hours do you practice? What pieces of music do you practice? How do you practice? Do you use a metronome?
Today we learn professionals aren’t superhumans, just humans with super patience.
Yes
Yeah if i had to do that, I’d look at the first note then just give up lol I’m so impatient
and practice
Well, just a hint of superhuman ability lol
lingling practices 40 hours a day
it is an incredible opportunity to have such a virtuoso willing to share part of his experience in this close contact with the web public
It's sooo motivating ❤️

I love how you can always tell where Ray is in the world bc his accent appears and disappears with region lol

Ray is showing how he approaches a difficult piece. You don't get to see this everyday!!
Dustin Liu yeah, it’s nice because you can also apply it to getting good at anything.
Yes, Hillary Hahn also has some wonderful practice videos on her channel!

Woah, the editing in this is great, love the "karaokeish" style of marking what part of the piece he's stuck in.
I love the sand analogy. I typically use practice as a water faucet. With each rep, the knob gets tighter and more information is retained.
From twoset violin.. I just enjoy watching these kinds of video even i'm not playing any instrument.
This channel is like OneSetViolin haha
Ray: for now its just slow practice (12:57)
Also Ray: proceeds to play the piece almost perfectly right away.
This the beauty of Rey Chen. When we ever see a professional violin practices in front of us. Showing us he is normal person like need to work with a lot of effort to get things done. I think he is great person

Yes she does, however it’s MUCH SLOWER than the top technicalists. Check out Roman Kim’s version and it Will TRULY blow your mind❣️
@@Chihuahuauno1 Exactly. Ning Feng, Kavakos, Roman Kim and so on don't massacre the tempo in order to pull it off.

Can you record yourself practicing with different musical ideas on a piece like Beethoven, Mendelssohn, or Saint-Saëns
This is so inspired. Keep doing, repeating until your muscles remember the movement. Thank you
This has been most inspiring, and awe-inspiring. Ray's patience and modesty is priceless.
I could watch this for hours - I feel so inspired to go practice now and the advice was so wonderful!

This cazenda is so difficult that I feel I'm going to viomit when I see the partition... Well done Chen !
